Cana of Galilee Cana of Galilee Introduction Cana (modern name Kafr Kanna; also known as Khirbet Cana) is a Galilean town five miles northeast of Nazareth. Its population of 8,500 includes both Muslims and Christians. Long revered as the site of Jesus' first miracle or turning water into wine at a wedding, Kafr Kanna has good historical support for its authenticity as ancient Cana. In the Bible On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus' mother was there, and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine was gone, Jesus' mother said to View of Cana (Kafr Kanna) from the north him, "They have no more wine.""Dear woman, why do you involve me?" Jesus replied, "My time has not yet come." His mother said to the servants, "Do whatever he tells you." Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from 20 to 30 gallons. Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with water"; so they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, "Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet." They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the Facade of the Franciscan Wedding Church servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside and said, "Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now." 1 This, the first of his miraculous signs, Jesus performed in Cana of Galilee. He thus revealed his glory, and his disciples put their faith in him. (John 2:1‐11) Authenticity The location of the Cana visited by Jesus is disputed and not known for certain. Kafr Kanna is the most traditional site and has the following factors in favor of its authenticity: 1. It is located on the main road between two important cities in the region (Sepphoris and Tiberias) and is not far from Nazareth. 2. The ruins on the site indicate the presence of a town in the time of Jesus (they span the Persian to Byzantine periods) 3. The site has no running spring water, so in ancient times water would have had to be brought from cisterns or from the valley below, and stored in stone jars such as those mentioned in the miracle story. 4. Christian pilgrims have revered this site as the place of Jesus' first miracle from an early date. Ancient graffiti can be seen on one of the grottoes. Sign at the Wedding Church However, recent excavations on a hill just north of Nazareth have uncovered ruins of a Jewish village from the 1st century AD. The excavators think the biblical Cana could be there instead of at this site 1 km to the east. History History records that a church was built in Cana by Empress Helena (mother of Constantine) in the 4th century, and this was identified with the remains of a large building found by travellers to Kafr Kanna in the 17th century. 2 Recent excavations have uncovered ruins of houses from the 1st‐4th centuries AD, of a 5th‐century atrium with portico, a Christian funerary building from the 5th or 6th century, and a medieval building. The land at Kafr Kanna was sold by the lord of Sidon to the Knights Hospitallers in 1254. The Franciscans became established here in 1641 and began building the present church over an older church in 1879. It was consecrated in 1883. What’s to See? The Franciscan Wedding Church at Cana is small and fronted by a courtyard. The facade has angel figures and is flanked by two bell towers and over an arcaded narthex. Inside, the church has two levels. The upper church has a chapel surmounted by a simple dome. In the nave just before the stairs is a fragment of a Byzantine mosaic dating from the 5th or 6th century and preserves the name of the donor in Dome of the Franciscan church Aramaic: "In memory of the pious Joseph, son of Tanhum, son of Bota and of his children who made this table, may it be for them a blessing, Amen." The lower church has a chapel and a small museum with artifacts from the site, including a winepress, a plastered cistern and vessels of various dates. One old jar is said to be one of the six jars used for the miracle. Opposite the Franciscan church is a Greek Orthodox church, which is usually closed. Two 13th‐century capitals are displayed near it. Courtyard of the Wedding Church 3 The ruins of ancient Cana are on top of a small rounded hill rising 60m above the plain. They can be seen on the eastern slope (Byzantine and early Arabic), around the top slopes, and on the peak (mostly Greek and Roman). The city of Capernaum was a small fishing village on the northwestern shore of the Sea of Galilee, about two miles west of the Jordan River. A. The Hebrew name for this village is Keœfar NahΩum, which means, “village of Nahum.” B. While this ancient town is not mentioned by name in the Old Testament, it is mentioned sixteen times in the New Testament. C. Matthew refers to Capernaum as our Lord’s “own city” (Matt 9:1), for it became the center of His Galilean ministry. D. This is interesting since He was not born in Capernaum, His parents did not live in there, and He did not grow up there! E. Jesus performed more miracles and preached more sermons in and around Capernaum than at any other place during His entire ministry. F. The residents of this prosperous town were common people who made their living from fishing, agriculture, and trade. G.     AA CCrriissiiss ooff WWiinnee aanndd JJooyy iinn CCaannaa A Contextual Reflection on John 2:1-11 A Long Time Favorite Passage Jesus’ first sign (miracle) of turning water into wine as recorded in John’s second “chapter” has long been one of my favorites. I was a member of a fraternity when I was first drawn to Christ in my college days. Back then it struck me as really neat that in this passage Jesus “kept the party going.” Now that was something a frat guy could relate to! Forty-five years later, the marriage feast at Cana is still one of my favorite passages, but for very different reasons. To take this tight rose bud of a passage (from a Western perspective) and allow its intricate petals to open up in full flower (from a Middle Eastern perspective), we need the context John always assumed his readers would know and understand, e.g., background regarding Cana; marriage feasts; village issues of shame, honor and reciprocal hospitality; ritual purification; as well as the Hebrew significance of wine. Cana Have you ever wondered why Jesus is even in Cana attending a wedding? Geography may offer some insight. Jesus grew up in Nazareth and based His Galilean ministry in Capernaum. While Nazareth is only about 17 miles from Capernaum as the crow flies and because of the often-hilly/mountainous terrain in the Galilee region, you can’t always walk the way the crow flies. Thus, the preferred 30-mile Nazareth-Capernaum walking route leaves Nazareth heading north toward Sepphoris and continues northward toward the Beth Netofa valley.

    Hadashot Arkeologiyot— Excavations ans Surveys in Israel 125 KAFR KANNA (JEBEL KHUWWEIKHA): IRON II, LATE HELLENISTIC AND ROMAN REMAINS YARDENNA ALEXANDRE INTRODUCTION A salvage excavation was carried out in November 2006 prior to construction on the lower western slope of Jebel Khuwweikha (‘the weak’ or ‘perforated’ hill), a soft, chalky limestone hill rising to the east of the village nucleus of Kafr Kanna in the Lower Galilee (map ref. NIG 232700/739025, OIG 182700/239025; hilltop elevation 350 m asl; Fig. 1:a).1 The site, at an altitude of c. 300 m asl, afforded some protection, although not qualifying as a naturally fortified spot. The moderate slopes were amenable to olive and fruit cultivation, as well as to goat and sheep grazing, whilst fertile agricultural lands were accessible c. 1 km to the north, in the Tur‘an/Bet Rimon Valley. This valley was traversed by the ancient east–west road connecting ‘Akko and Tiberias. The nearest fresh water source, a spring (known as “Kanna spring”), is found south of the village nucleus, about 900 m southeast of, and 80 m lower than, the site (at c. 220 m asl), rendering water carrying a tedious chore. The present-day Jebel Khuwweikha senior inhabitants recall the women’s daily trek to the spring to bring water. The local nari and chalky limestone are well suited for quarrying building stones and cutting out rock-hewn agricultural installations and caves.     THE WEDDING FEAST AT CANA (Jn 2:1-11) By Jim Seghers John‟s ostensibly simple narrative of the wedding feast at Cana explodes in layers of meaning when it is examined in faith. This reflection proposes to offer some insights that may deepen your understanding and stimulate your discoveries in this rich passage. It is no accident that John begins his Gospel with the identical words that open the Bible: “In the beginning” (Gen 1:1). In the first chapter of Genesis the emphasis is on the ascending order of creation culminating in formation of Adam and Eve on the sixth day. In the recapitulation in second chapter of Genesis the emphasis shifts to the covenant God established with his favorite creatures to whom God gave dominion over the earth. This covenantal relationship is depicted in the Bible as a family bond or a marriage. In the first chapter of John‟s Gospel the evangelist lays out a literary new creation week. On the first day the Word who is God is depicted as coming to make a “new creation” (2 Cor 5:17). He is both “life” and the “light of men” paralleling the first day of creation in Genesis when God said: “Let there be light” (Jn 1:4; Gen 1:3). The first three days of John‟s literary creation week are laid out as follows: First Day: Jn 1:1-34 Second Day: Jn 1:29-34 beginning with the words: “The next day.” Third Day: Jn 1:35-42 beginning with the words: “The next day.” Fourth Day: Jn 1:43-51 beginning with the words: “The next day.” Seventh Day: Jn 2:1-11 wedding at Cana Chapter two introduces the marriage at Cana with the words: “On the third day” (Jn 2:1).
