The Gentle Art of On-Screen Murder: Investigating the Screen Adaptations of Agatha Christie's Detective Fiction Prof
The Gentle Art of On-Screen Murder: Investigating the Screen Adaptations of Agatha Christie's Detective Fiction Prof. Sucharita Sarkar Agatha Christie - the highest selling author ever, outselling even the Bible and Shakespeare - has long been heralded variously as the Queen of Crime, a Publishing Phenomenon and the First Lady of Crime (Keating, 1977). The sales of her books have escalated fi-om a mere 10,000 (hardback) prints for each new book in the 1930s to an estimated 2 to 4 billion (wikipedia.org) at present. Moreover, her popularity is not restricted to the English-speaking world. An August 1961 report by the UNESCO showed that Agatha Christie has been translated into over 103 foreign languages. "Her works show up in the bush of Nigeria, the alleys of Hong Kong, the beaches of Acapulco, as well as the coffee tables of Mayfair and Fifth Avenue." (Riley & MacAllister, 1986). What is also quite unexpected is that Agatha Christie's incredible sales success does not owe anything to tie-ups with television or films (Barnard, 1990). A comparison may be made here with J K Rowling, another very popular British author, whose Harry Potter series of books and film adaptations formed a harmonious network of literary and cinematic discourses that have symbiotically and simultaneously fuelled each other's sales and demand. In fact, Rowling's Harry Potter series is also different in that both the books and the films have been extra-ordinarily successfil, with the series-ending film, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows -Part- 11, breaking box-office records as the highest-grossing film till date. -

UK RELEASE DATE February 22nd 2019 UK Publicity Contacts [email protected] [email protected] Images and Press materials: www.studiocanalpress.co.uk 1 SYNOPSIS Welcome to Kehoe, it’s -10 degrees and counting at this glitzy ski resort in the Rocky Mountains. The local police aren’t used to much action until the son of unassuming town snowplough driver, Nels Coxman (Liam Neeson), is murdered at the order of Viking (Tom Bateman), a flamboyant drug lord. Fueled by rage and armed with heavy machinery, Nels sets out to dismantle the cartel one man at a time, but his understanding of murder comes mainly from what he read in a crime novel. As the bodies pile up, his actions ignite a turf war between Viking and his long-standing rival White Bull (Tom Jackson), a soulful Native- American mafia boss, that will quickly escalate and turn the small town’s bright white slopes blood-red. 2 BLOOD IN THE SNOW Director Hans Petter Moland and Liam Neeson team up for a dramatic thriller that mixes icy revenge and dark humor “It’s a whirlwind of vengeance, violence and dark humour.” - Liam Neeson “A whole can of worms.” That’s how Liam Neeson describes what his character opens in Hans Petter Moland’s blisteringly violent and bitingly hilarious COLD PURSUIT. “My character goes out on a path of vengeance, but doesn’t realise what he’s getting himself into,” says Neeson. “He thinks he’s going after one guy who killed his son. In actual fact, it all escalates into a whirlwind of vengeance and violence. -

The Film/TV Faces of Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot Austin Trevor (1931) Martin Gabel (1962)
The Film/TV faces of Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot First introduced by author Agatha Christie in 1920, Belgian sleuth Hercule Poirot has appeared in 33 novels and more than 50 short stories, before publication of his final tale in 1975. With such a wide range of material to draw from, it was inevitable that Poirot would go on to be so widely portrayed on screen. Starting with Austin Trevor in 1931, many actors have stepped into the detective’s shoes over the years, with the latest incarnation being portrayed by Dunkirk’s Kenneth Branagh in 2017’s Branagh- directed adaptation of Murder on the Orient Express. An all-new TV-mini-series version of The ABC Murders will feature John Malkovich as Poirot in 2019. Austin Trevor (1931) The first actor to play the detective on the big screen, Trevor first appeared as Poirot in the 1931 film Alibi. He went on to reprise the role in Black Coffee (1931) and Lord Edgware Dies (1934), and famously believed that the main reason he gained the role was down to his ability to speak with a French accent. Trevor also appeared in a later Poirot film, The Alphabet Murders (1965), albeit in a smaller character role with Tony Randall stepping in as the detective. Martin Gabel (1962) Gabel appeared as Poirot only once – in a 1962 pilot episode for a proposed series, The Adventures of Hercule Poirot. The plot adapted the short story, “The Disappearance of Mr. Davenheim”, in a half- hour presentation. Though this pilot episode did air on British television, the series was not picked up.
