Given annually since 1988 in honor of the late Bernard Malamud, this award recognizes a body of work that demonstrates excellence in the art of short fiction. The announcement was made today by the directors of the PEN/Faulkner Foundation, Robert Stone and Susan Richards Shreve, Co-Chairs. George Saunders is an acclaimed essayist and author of novellas, but he is best known for his energetic, inventive, and deeply humane short stories. In the words of Alan Cheuse, a member of the Malamud Award Committee, “Saunders is one of the most gifted and seriously successful comic short story writers working in America today. And his comedy, like most great comedy, is dark. George Saunders is the real thing, the successor to such dark comedians of ordinary speech as Donald Barthelme and Grace Paley. He's a Vonnegutian in his soul and, paradoxically, a writer like no one but himself.” This singular writing voice is equal parts hilarious and compassionate, merging colloquial language with technocratic jargon, surreal futuristic landscapes with everyday homes and yards, foreboding undercurrents with sparks of enormous optimism. The first of Saunders’s four published story collections, CivilWarLand in Bad Decline, arrived in 1996 and moved Thomas Pynchon to describe Saunders as, “An astoundingly tuned voice—graceful, dark, authentic, and funny—telling just the kinds of stories we need to get us through these times.” His most recent collection, Tenth of December, was published to near universal acclaim in January of 2013 and inspired a New York Times Magazine cover story titled, “George Saunders Has Written the Best Book You’ll Read This Year.” Charles Yu, reviewing it in the L.A. -

Often this entails contrasting such fiction with a conventionalized or exhausted realism, which despite the interventions of fabulists and postmodernists (not to mention the efforts of many genre writers) remains more or less the default preference in both American fiction and general-interest literary criticism. For this joy in words is what makes her writing so memo- rable: each sentence is delectable, meant to be read and then re-read, reveled in and embraced before the reader moves on to see what the next sentence might bring. Her novels call the reader to slow down, to notice the beauty of the ordinary, both in the beauty of her writing and the beauty of the lives she writes about. If one could take a common kitchen sponge, saturate the sponge with the words from her novels, and then wring out the sponge, what one would see drip out slowly would unmis- takably be grace. -

REVIEW In the Shadow of War (2006) Patrick Garry Patrick Garry is a professor of law and the prolific author of both scholarly books and allegorical novels in the tradition of Nathaniel Hawthorne, Flannery O’Connor, and Marilynne Robinson. Allegory is a rare achievement that distinguishes the most evolved literary fiction and is characteristic of many classics. The narrator Glen begins In the Shadow of War by inviting the reader to participate with him in trying to understand the meaning of his brother Ricky, which turns out to be the meaning of life. When the reader learns that the story is going to be about the narrator’s relationship to a retarded brother—“Who wants to read about a retard?”--it is both a straightforward forewarning on page 1 and a test. Like Bartleby in Melville’s great story, Ricky is a mirror reflecting the nature of other characters (most of whom are retarded in various less visible ways) and of the reader as well: Glen says, “That was how I often judged people--by how I thought they would react to retards.” We do not blame Glen in the least for what happens to Ricky, because he is so young, because he tries so hard and obviously loves Ricky, because he is so honest and critical of himself, because we (most readers) would never be able to do as well by Ricky as Glen, and because Glen is the one who actually has the responsibility. We admire him all the way because he is so much better a person than we think we would be in such a situation. -

May 2020 Dear Student, You are enrolled in Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition for the coming school year. Bowling Green High School has offered this course since 1983. I thought that I would tell you a little bit about the course and what will be expected of you. Please share this letter with your parents or guardians. A.P. Literature and Composition is a year-long class that is taught on a college freshman level. This means that we will read college level texts—often from college anthologies—and we will deal with other materials generally taught in college. You should be advised that some of these texts are sophisticated and contain mature themes and/or advanced levels of difficulty. In this class we will concentrate on refining reading, writing, and critical analysis skills, as well as personal reactions to literature. A.P. Literature is not a survey course or a history of literature course so instead of studying English and world literature chronologically, we will be studying a mix of classic and contemporary pieces of fiction from all eras and from diverse cultures. This gives us an opportunity to develop more than a superficial understanding of literary works and their ideas. Writing is at the heart of this A.P. course, so you will write often in journals, in both personal and researched essays, and in creative responses. You will need to revise your writing. I have found that even good students—like you—need to refine, mature, and improve their writing skills. You will have to work diligently at revising major essays. -
Names in Marilynne Robinson's <I>Gilead</I> and <I>Home</I>
names, Vol. 58 No. 3, September, 2010, 139–49 Names in Marilynne Robinson’s Gilead and Home Susan Petit Emeritus, College of San Mateo, California, USA The titles of Marilynne Robinson’s complementary novels Gilead (2004) and Home (2008) and the names of their characters are rich in allusions, many of them to the Bible and American history, making this tale of two Iowa families in 1956 into an exploration of American religion with particular reference to Christianity and civil rights. The books’ titles suggest healing and comfort but also loss and defeat. Who does the naming, what the name is, and how the person who is named accepts or rejects the name reveal the sometimes difficult relationships among these characters. The names also reinforce the books’ endorsement of a humanistic Christianity and a recommitment to racial equality. keywords Bible, American history, slavery, civil rights, American literature Names are an important source of meaning in Marilynne Robinson’s prize-winning novels Gilead (2004) and Home (2008),1 which concern the lives of two families in the fictional town of Gilead, Iowa,2 in the summer of 1956. Gilead is narrated by the Reverend John Ames, at least the third Congregationalist minister of that name in his family, in the form of a letter he hopes his small son will read after he grows up, while in Home events are recounted in free indirect discourse through the eyes of Glory Boughton, the youngest child of Ames’ lifelong friend, Robert Boughton, a retired Presbyterian minister. Both Ames, who turns seventy-seven3 that summer (2004: 233), and Glory, who is thirty-eight, also reflect on the past and its influence on the present. -
