2019: A year of immense planning, advocacy, and growth. Planned Parenthood Advocates of Arizona continues to work in coalition with our champions and community partners to make sure the seismic shifts we helped create at the State Capitol in 2018 continue to move through 2020 and ultimately lead to the realization of a pro-choice majority in Arizona government. From ensuring the election of Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego – the first female mayor of the nation’s fifth largest city – to collaborating closely with legislators who want to defend reproductive rights, we are working tirelessly to ensure that every person is empowered to choose their own reproductive destiny – and we won’t stop until we achieve that goal.

As one of the state’s most influential political advocacy organizations, we are firmly committed to protecting access to sexual and reproductive health care and we are actively engaging and listening to diverse voices as a priority. This year, we were proud to work alongside Superintendent of Public Instruction Kathy Hoffman, State Representative Martin Quezada, and many other community Chris Love leaders to finally repeal the discriminatory “No Promo Homo” law which forbid the “promotion of homosexuality” in Arizona Board Chair classrooms and excluded the experiences of LGBTQ+ students, particularly in the instruction of HIV prevention and health education.

In late 2019, the Trump-Pence administration’s gag rule forced Planned Parenthood affiliates across the nation, including Arizona, out of Title X – the nation’s only program dedicated to affordable birth control and reproductive health care. The Trump-Pence gag 15 rule, which specifically targeted Planned Parenthood, makes it illegal for Title X providers to refer patients for abortion, leaving patients with limited or misleading information about their health and reproductive care options. Planned Parenthood Advocates of Arizona rose to the challenge and spearheaded events to bring our communities together and hold our elected officials accountable, particularly U.S. Senator Martha McSally, who supports all acts to undermine and cripple the Title X program. We hosted phone-a- thons and public forums to ensure that everyone in the community, including our elected representatives, were fully knowledgeable about the devastating impact of the gag rule.

Looking forward, Planned Parenthood Advocates of Arizona and our many supporters know that 2020 presents a unique opportunity for Arizonans to swing our state government back to a pro-choice majority. In 2019, we restructured and expanded our Lola Sophia Bovell, team to bolster our efforts in the coming election cycle. This included bringing in strong leadership at all levels of the organization. JD, MA With your support, we will mobilize our communities and take their strong voices straight to the ballot box. We will support and hold Executive Director our elected champions accountable in making the changes needed to reflect our values. We will be steadfast in ensuring that no decisions are made about us, without us.

Thank you for your support. With your commitment to a just tomorrow, Planned Parenthood Advocates of Arizona will have a bigger impact than ever before – the realization of an Arizona with strong pro-choice leaders in office and in the majority, ensuring reproductive justice for all, for decades to come. The time is now and we are ready because we care, no matter what. Join us.
