Halie Loren : Butterfly Blue Halie Loren : butterfly blue In 2015, Internationally-acclaimed Singer-songwriter Halie Loren’s critically-acclaimed newest (and eighth) album Butterfly Blue enjoyed such highlights as debuting at #1 on Billboard Japan’s jazz album chart and appearing on the Grammy Ballot. Touring in support of the album brought her around the world, to locales such as Japan (her seventh tour there), South Korea, Europe, and across the U.S. and Canada, including sold-out appearances at the Rochester International Jazz Festival, Cotton Club Tokyo, the Montreal International Jazz Festival, and Jazz Alley (Seattle). Butterfly Blue has been described as Loren’s most sophisticated and mature release yet, and also her riskiest effort in terms of artistic reinvention and reach. This broad-yet-unified collection of twelve tracks, hailed by many critics and fans as her best yet, creates a soul-steeped journey through the expansive varieties of American music, with nuances of folk, balladry, jazz, and blues. Authenticity and connection is one of the primary keys to Loren’s artistic approach: whether it’s injecting the American Songbook with old-school soul or finding a familiar thread of nostalgia in newly-penned originals, no matter the language (her repertoire finds her singing in French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, and more), Loren finds ways to bridge cultures and genres in unlikely and always heart-felt ways. “Music creates greater connection with other people, connection to my purpose for existence,” Loren says. The imagery throughout Butterfly Blue speaks to Loren’s own artistic progress, as well as to her sixteen-year professional music career during which she’s journeyed from Alaskan childhood prodigy to jazzy chanteuse to globetrotting award-winning artist— images of strife, loss, cocoons of becoming, things fallen, but also flight and liberation and longing, a new-found sense of freedom, and a return to the vast wellspring of American song. “There is always beauty to be found, even in the most painful experiences, and finding ways to reflect that beauty back at the world to remind us that it’s still there is, to me, the role of art. That is ultimately the highest calling for me as a music-maker. To give back, to share beauty, and to let it transform me so that it might transform others,” says Loren. track list: “Halie Loren glides in flight on her 1. Yellow Bird * 2. • “Blue Moon of Kentucky”—Bill Monroe and His Blue Grass Boys (1947) Added to the National Registry: 2002 Essay by Richard D
“Blue Moon of Kentucky”—Bill Monroe and his Blue Grass Boys (1947) Added to the National Registry: 2002 Essay by Richard D. Smith (guest post)* Bill Monroe Illuminating a major juncture in American popular music history--the crossroads of country music and rock 'n’ roll–is the “Blue Moon of Kentucky.” Originally composed as a lonesome but lovely waltz by Bill Monroe (1911-1996)--the innovative Rosine, Kentucky-born singer/bandleader/mandolinist who became a pillar of the Grand Ole Opry, was a major figure in the Folk Music Revival and is renowned as “The Father of Bluegrass”--it was later covered by the young Elvis Presley during his first commercial recording sessions. Indeed, it is musically and culturally significant that Presley's first single consisted of his crooning and insinuating version of Delta blues singer/guitarist Arthur Crudup's “That's All Right” on one side and a rollicking rockabilly arrangement (in 4/4 time) of Monroe's waltz on the other. The roots of rock in African American music are well known, but the parallel influence of white country music deserves greater understanding. The story of “Blue Moon of Kentucky” provides this. Bill Monroe’s earliest-known performance of “Blue Moon of Kentucky” was on the Grand Ole Opry on August 25, 1945. Monroe recorded it during his first session for Columbia Records (having previously been on RCA Victor Bluebirds) on September 16, 1946. The session was historic, both for its material and Monroe’s sidemen in the Blue Grass Boys. Participating in their first recordings with Monroe were superb lead vocalist/guitarist/songwriter Lester Flatt and the brilliant and seminal three-finger-style banjo picker Earl Scruggs.

Radic Mambo No.5 is the title of a Mambo and Jive dance piece originally written by Pérez Prado in 1949, and a later version of Prado served as an instrumental model for the song Mambo No. 5 (A Little Bit Of...) by Lou Bega, who became a worldwide seller of millions and a summer hit in 1999. Measured by world turnover, Mambo No. 5 is the most successful German music production of all time in the pop music sector. (Source: Wikipedia) The origin story of the original begins in 1949, when the Mambo conductor Pérez Prado composed the song Mambo No. 5. Since then, he has been registered as an author with BMI[7] and won a BMI Award. For Prado, a total of 433 titles are protected by copyright. The last of these statements is illustrated with references to the discussion of God in The Brothers Karamazov, the Devil’s role as the “adversary of Being” in Goethe’s Faust, the burgeoning mythos necessitated by Superman’s omnipotence, and the juvenile idiopathic arthritis suffered by their formulator’s daughter, Mikhaila. “Blue Suede Shoes”—Carl Perkins (1955) Added to the National Registry: 2006 Essay by Mark Bristol with Ken Burke (guest post)* Carl Perkins Raised by sharecroppers near Tiptonville, TN, Carl Perkins grew up on Southern Gospel music both from church and from African-American field hands. Roy Acuff and Bill Monroe's music on the “Grand Ole Opry” gave Carl the urge to play guitar, so his dad made him his first one out of a cigar box, later buying him a used and battered Gene Autry model. Young Perkins learned some chords and licks from “Uncle” John Westbrook, a neighboring sharecropper, songs like “Matchbox Blues” (which he later recorded), and how to connect the sound from the strings to his soul. At 14, he wrote “Let Me Take You To The Movie Magg,” which later convinced Sam Phillips to offer him a Sun Records contract, after Carl begged for a chance to be heard. Carl had been playing the beer joints around Jackson, TN, and on local radio with his brothers Jay and Clayton (and later on with W.S. “Fluke” Holland on drums) when his wife Val heard Elvis' version of “Blue Moon Of Kentucky” on the radio and said to Carl, “That sounds like y'all's music.” “Movie Magg” was released March 19, 1955 on Phillips' Flip label, with the much more country “Turn Around” on the other side becoming a regional success. Johnny Cash had become a Sun artist by then, and he, Elvis and Perkins toured regionally together. Carl's second record “Gone, Gone, Gone” was released on Sun, and also was a regional success, with “Let The Jukebox Keep On Playing” on its flipside.

FORM IN POPULAR SONG, 1990-2009 Jeffrey S. Ensign Dissertation Prepared for the Degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS December 2015 APPROVED: Thomas Sovik, Major Professor Donna Emmanuel, Committee Member John Covach, Committee Member Frank Heidlberger, Chair of Music History, Theory, and Ethnomusicology Benjamin Brand, Director of Graduate Studies for the College of Music James Scott, Dean of the College of Music Costas Tsatsoulis, Dean of the Toulouse Graduate School Ensign, Jeffrey S. Form in Popular Song, 1990-2009. Doctor of Philosophy (Music Theory), December 2015, 285 pp., 31 figures, 127 examples, bibliography, 92 titles. Through an examination of 402 songs that charted in the top 20 of the Billboard year-end charts between the years 1990 and 2009, this dissertation builds upon previous research in form of popular song by addressing the following questions: 1) How might formal sections be identified through melody, harmony, rhythm, instrumentation, and text? 2) How do these sections function and relate to one another and to the song as a whole? 3) How do these sections, and the resulting formal structures, relate to what has been described by previous theorists as normative? 4) What new norms and trends can be observed in popular song forms since 1990? Although many popular songs since 1990 do follow well-established forms, some songwriters and producers change and vary these forms. AAA strophic form, AABA form, Verse-Chorus form, Verse-Chorus with Prechorus and/or Postchorus sections, Verse-Chorus- Bridge form, “Other, with a Chorus” and “Other, without a Chorus” forms are addressed. An increasing number of the songs in each of the above listed forms are based on a repeating harmonic progression or no harmonic progression at all.
