PURPOSE:

1. To foster a safe and professional environment for employees. 2. All staff will be well groomed and convey a professional appearance.

PROCEDURE:

Departmental managers are expected to monitor compliance to the policy and give feedback to employees and volunteers regarding appropriate attire. The range of solutions can include wearing of extra to cover the offending apparel (for the remainder of the shift), sending the employee home to change, and using corrective steps, as required and appropriate.

Employees are cautioned that they may be sent home without pay to change clothing or improve their appearance should their feel that they are not adhering to the standard.

An employee should direct their questions or concerns about the appropriateness of their clothing or appearance to their manager.

The following general guidelines apply to all Homes’ staff:

• Name Tag – Home/Department, not County photo ID badge. Name tags are for the purposes of identification and security, and must be worn at all times during working hours. • Staff must be immaculate in personal cleanliness and hygiene. • Jewellery selected should be appropriate and functional for the work setting. Jewellery will be worn in moderation. • Body piercing must be moderate and not easily accessible to risk of injury due to interaction with other persons.

Page 2 of 4 • Shoes must provide safe and secure footing and offer protection against potential workplace hazards. Shoes must reflect a proper business appearance. Colour and type of shoes (safety toe, etc.) may be determined by department policy. • Hair, including facial hair (i.e. beard), is to be kept clean and groomed. • Fingernails are to be kept to a functional and professional length. • For the comfort of all guests and co-workers, use of perfumes, colognes or other obvious fragrances should be kept to a minimum while in the workplace as per Admin Policy # 1.14 Fragrances and Scented Products. • All personal protective equipment (PPE) required for the safe completion of any task must be utilized as directed. Failure to follow PPE requirements may be grounds for initial and progressive discipline. • Additional requirements may be outlined in the department-specific policy manuals.

Examples of attire that are NOT acceptable include but are not limited to:

• Casual t-shirts – usually cotton material, logos, graphics, sayings, loose fitting

• Casual tank top – usually cotton material, logos, graphics, sayings, loose fitting, thin (undershirt)

• Sun dress – sleeveless (spaghetti straps), loose fitting, usually cotton blend, lightweight

• Beach sandals – flip flops, thong sandals, sport sandals. When in resident care and kitchen areas, shoes must have closed toe and heel.

• Jeans, track (sweat) pants, shorts, casual t-shirts (graphics, sayings, etc.), casual tank tops, halter tops, spandex, leggings, yoga pants, clothing of a tight and/or revealing/see through/low cut nature, running shoes (unless authorized by the Department Manager), beach sandals, sun and hoodies, shirts with advertisements, logos, etc., may not be worn.

Page 3 of 4 • Sweaters, fleece jackets, lab coats, nursing coats, etc., may be worn and must be free of any and all wording and/or logos. Workout jackets are acceptable but must be free of slogans, wording, etc. and zip up so as to be easily removed. Tops must be: scrub top, matching coloured golf shirt. Tee shirts must not have advertising (e.g. beer, sports teams, etc.) Footwear/socks: white socks and duty shoes or white running shoes.

• In some functions, it will remain a requirement to wear long pants for safety reasons (e.g. operating machinery). See Warm Weather Attire.

• Warm Weather Attire, as outlined below, may be worn throughout the year.

Shorts/Capri’s- 3/4 length: Solid colour coordinate with uniform top (at knee length, above the knee is not acceptable), ¾ length pants May NOT be sports/work-out style shorts, spandex, leggings, yoga pants.

Enforcement:

Enforcement of the dress code guidelines will be maintained by the Department Manager and/or his/her designate. The Department Manager may, after consultation with Human Resources, send individuals home to change, without pay, if their on-duty appearance violates the Homes’ Dress Code Guidelines. The employee will not be paid for the time away from the workplace to change nor receive mileage expense.

• If employees have questions regarding appropriate appearance or attire, they should consult with their Department Manager immediately.

United Way Dress Down Friday – All Departments

It is the intent of the County Homes to support the United Way campaign as well as County sanctioned charities through the voluntary participation of employees in casual dress Fridays.

Employees that chose to donate, on a bi-weekly basis through deductions; to the County supported fundraising campaigns may dress in a more casual nature each Friday. (Appropriate business attire must be worn if meeting with individuals from outside of the organization for County related business).

Appropriate attire for casual Fridays includes casual top, blouse or shirt. A shirt with a team may be worn i.e., Maple Leafs, Green Bay Packers, Blue Jays, etc. Jeans (blue or coloured) may be worn on casual Friday’s. Although attire may be more casual than regular business attire, a professional appearance is expected at all times. Ripped, stained and/or dirty clothing is unacceptable. The United Way Badge must be worn as part of the uniform. Apparel with unprofessional pictures and/or wording is not appropriate.

If employees have questions regarding appropriate appearance or attire for Casual Friday, they should consult with their Department Manager.
