GCR –World Ranking System PART III SECTION 1A APPENDIX 6 WORLD RANKING SYSTEM [Note: Competition Regulation 30] REGULA 1. Definition T 1.1 The World Ranking and World Junior Ranking are lists of players / pairs in order of strength. I O There is one list for each of the five Badminton events in the World Ranking and World Junior NS Ranking. The system used to rank players / pairs is explained below: 1.2 The world team ranking is the list of member associations in order of strength. 1.3 Players / pairs: 1.3.1 win ranking points by playing in tournaments that are graded. 1.3.2 in the World Ranking are ranked if they have played in one or more graded tournaments in the last 52 weeks, or, in the World Junior Ranking are ranked if they have played one or more graded tournaments in the last 52 weeks. 1.3.3 win ranking points by playing in and winning matches in tournaments. 1.3.4 the higher the level of tournament, the more points are won. 1.3.5 the further reached in a competition, the more points are won. 1.3.6 can be seeded based on their World Ranking and World Junior Ranking. 1.3.7 can qualify for the Olympic Games and the World Championships based on their World Ranking. 2. Tournaments included in the Rankings 2.1 The World Rankings are compiled from the results of tournaments that are sanctioned by the BWF (except Junior tournaments) held over the last 52 week period. All tournaments eligible, under the criteria at the end of this section, are graded and the details of the grade are published in the International Calendar of Tournaments. 2.2 The World Junior Rankings are compiled from the results of BWF World Ranking tournaments (results from a maximum of two BWF World Ranking sanctioned tournaments may be included in a junior player’s World Junior Ranking) and the junior tournaments that are sanctioned by the BWF held over the last 52 week period. All tournaments eligible, under the criteria at the end of this section, are graded and the details of the grade are published in the International Calendar and Junior Calendar of Tournaments. 3. World Ranking and World Junior Ranking Lists 3.1 The Rankings are published on a Thursday every week. The complete Ranking lists are available on the BWF web site: www.bwfbadminton.org. 4. Points system 4.1 Players/pairs win points according to how far they progress in the draw of a particular event. 4.2 If a player/pair: Part III- Section 1A Appendix 6 142 GCR –World Ranking System 4.2.1 had a bye in the first round and lost in the second round – they receive first round loser’s points. 4.2.2 had a bye in the first round, won in the second round and lost in the third round – they receive third round loser’s points. 4.2.3 had a walkover in the first round and lost in the second round – they receive second round loser’s points. 4.2.4 had a bye in the first round, walkover in the second round and lost in the third round – they receive third round loser’s points. NS O I T 4.2.5 in tournament levels 3 and 4 had a wildcard entry and lost in the first round - they receive no world ranking points. REGULA 4.2.6 in a tournament with rounds in group play (pool matches) they will receive points according to the finishing position in the group, equal to the equivalent finishing position in a knock out format tournament. ● For example a player/pair finishing in fourth place in a group, in a draw containing eight groups of four would receive round of 64 loser’s points; Eight groups of four are played. ● Number 1 in the group proceeds to the knockout stage, playing for position 1, 2, 3/4 and 5/8 ● Number 2 in the group would receive position 9/16 world ranking points ● Number 3 in the group would receive position 17/32 world ranking points ● Number 4 in the group would receive positions 33/64 world ranking points. 4.3 Where the BWF disciplinary committee cancels a match due to a breach of GCR Appendix 5 then the World Ranking points will be removed from that player/pair. 5. Ranking 5.1 World Ranking - 10 or fewer World Ranking tournaments in the last 52 weeks If a player or pair has competed in the same event at 10 or fewer World Ranking tournaments then the ranking is worked out by adding the points won at the tournaments. 5.2 World Ranking - 11 or more World Ranking tournaments in the last 52 weeks If a player or pair has competed in the same event at 11 or more World Ranking tournaments, only the 10 highest points scored in the tournaments during the previous 52 week period count towards their ranking. 5.3 If a player or pair has competed in the same event at seven or fewer World Junior Ranking tournaments then the ranking is worked out by adding the points won at the tournaments. Up to a maximum of three BWF sanctioned World Ranking tournaments shall be included in the player or pair’s World Junior Ranking. 5.4 If a player or pair has competed in the same event at eight or more World Junior Ranking tournaments, only the seven highest points scored in the tournaments during the previous 52 week period count towards their World Junior Ranking, of which a maximum of three BWF sanctioned World Ranking tournaments shall be included in the player or pair’s World Junior Ranking. Points lists 6.1 Players / pairs are ranked using points. The player / pair with the highest calculated points will be REGULA ranked number one and so on. 6.2 If two or more players / pairs have identical points, then the players / pairs who have played in the T most tournaments will be ranked higher. If players / pairs have identical points and have played in I O NS an identical number of tournaments, then these players / pairs are ranked equal. So, if say five players are ranked 1 to 5, and then there are three players with equal points and number of tournaments, the ran king would be: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 6, 6, 9, 10, etc. 6.3 The tables that follow show the points awarded in BWF-sanctioned tournaments. Badminton Europe can select up to three tournaments to upgrade to the upgraded Asian and European International Tournament level. NS 6.4.1 Eligibility. O I T ● Players must be under 19 years of age to be eligible in the World Junior Ranking. ● Once players are no longer eligible to play in U19 Competition they will be removed from REGULA the World Junior Rankings. ● In doubles players will be ranked as individuals and not as pairs. 6.5 World Championships & Olympic Games ● World Championships & Olympic Games are rated as BWF tournaments. 6.6 Continental Championships/Continental Multi Sports Games Individual Championships 6.6.1 Individual Championships ● Asian Championships are graded as BWF World Superseries ● European Championships are graded as Grand Prix Gold ● Oceania Championships are graded as Grand Prix ● Pan American Championships are graded as Grand Prix ● African Championships are graded as International Challenge 6.6.1.1 At the request of the Continental Confederation, points earned in the Continental Multi-sport Games Individual Championships can be included in the World Ranking instead of Continental Individual Championships as specified in 6.6.1 above.

    WORLD SQUASH UPDATE Issue 83 November / December 2019 FOR ALL WSF REGIONAL & NATIONAL FEDERATIONS cc: WSF Regional Presidents, WSF Commission Members, Stakeholders, PSA members, SPINs, Media, Accredited Products and Companies CAPE TOWN HOSTS SUCCESSFUL AGM The World Squash Federation Annual General Meeting took place on 6 November in Cape Town, South Africa, hosted by Squash South Africa. The WSF Conference, which preceded the AGM, facilitated informal discussions and featured presentations to update the delegates on key initiatives - including the World Squash Officiating, a joint enterprise between the WSF and Professional Squash Association (PSA) to develop an online platform that will provide National Federations with the tools to develop refereeing in their country. The new initiative is scheduled to go live before the end of the year. Additionally James Sandwith, from BEBRAND, presented the findings of a strategic review commissioned by WSF, with the report now available for all member nations to appraise. The 49th Annual General Meeting, attended by representatives of 24 National Federations, saw delegates agree an amendment to the Articles of Association to reduce the risk of inappropriate leadership behavior and to ensure that delegates in attendance at an AGM have a formal connection with their National Federations. There were no changes to the standard Rules of Squash. However, the Rules of Squash 57 were updated, adding an extra ball rebound resilience at 33 degrees C that will help to ensure that the differential between blue and black balls - and their range of bounce - will be more uniform across the brands that are WSF-approved. The WSF Championship Regulations were updated with respect to player eligibility, the use of random draws and a new timeline and procedure for seeding juniors.

    Facts and Records History of Badminton In 1873, the Duke of Beaufort held a lawn party at his country house in the village of Badminton, Gloucestershire. A game of Poona was played on that day and became popular among British society’s elite. The new party sport became known as “the Badminton game”. In 1877, the Bath Badminton Club was formed and developed the first official set of rules. The Badminton Association was formed at a meeting in Southsea on 13th September 1893. It was the first National Association in the world and framed the rules for the Association and for the game. The popularity of the sport increased rapidly with 300 clubs being introduced by the 1920’s. Rising to 9,000 shortly after World War Π. The International Badminton Federation (IBF) was formed in 1934 with nine founding members: England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Denmark, Holland, Canada, New Zealand and France and as a consequence the Badminton Association became the Badminton Association of England. From nine founding members, the IBF, now called the Badminton World Federation (BWF), has over 160 member countries. The future of Badminton looks bright. Badminton was officially granted Olympic status in the 1992 Barcelona Games. Indonesia was the dominant force in that first Olympic tournament, winning two golds, a silver and a bronze; the country’s first Olympic medals in its history. More than 1.1 billion people watched the 1992 Olympic Badminton competition on television. Eight years later, and more than a century after introducing Badminton to the world, Britain claimed their first medal in the Olympics when Simon Archer and Jo Goode achieved Mixed Doubles Bronze in Sydney.

    BADMINTON CONFEDERATION AFRICA STRATEGIC PLAN 2016-2020 About this Document The purpose of this document is to outline the strategic direction of the Badminton Confederation Africa (BCA) as a Continental Badminton Confederation for Africa. This document begins with a general introduction of the organisation, the planning process and a brief overview of the strategic plan. The second part of this document details the individual goals and objectives of each strategic areas and priorities. Expected outcomes or key performance indicators are also detailed in the second part. For consistency with the Badminton World Federation and in view of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, this plan has a time frame of 4 years starting 2016 to 2020. Even though this reference period mainly covers the next four years the plan also outline measures which may go beyond this period and can only be reached at a later stage. While this strategic plan will eventually be implemented by BCA Operations, it has to be recognised by all stakeholders and partners and their involvement will be vital for the success of the plan. Consequently, this plan also represents a communication tool to create a common vision and clear objectives on the horizon to work towards for all stakeholders and partners. The Badminton Confederation Africa Badminton Confederation is the continental governing body for the sport commonly known as Badminton in the African territory. The head office of the Confederation is in Quatre Bornes, Mauritius. Badminton World Federation recognizes BCA as a Continental Confederation alongside the other Continental Confederation – Badminton Asia, Badminton Europe, Badminton Pan Am Confederation and Badminton Oceania.
