NP and ES will be attending. Thank you to all those who contributed projects to the Task and Finish group held in September to prioritise projects going forward for EA funding- WEIF. Action ES: Contact Ali Morgan, Bristol Avon Catchment Partnership, to obtain the link to the latest River Trust conference presentations. Action All: To ensure Natalie is brought up to speed on the Stour catchment, send on any updates or information that may be relevant for her to take the role further. 2. Wessex Water Constructed Wetlands projects- Liam Reynolds Wessex Water has been involved in a number of Constructed Wetlands projects over the last AMP to improve the quality of water being discharged into watercourses and protecting abstraction sources. Durleigh wetland in West Somerset has recently been constructed with a series of 3 interlinked cells, each with a different objective and method of settling out contaminants such as phosphates. These wetlands aim to reduce the sediment and nutrient inputs to the reservoir, maintaining the volume and quality of the raw water supplied and thus limiting the amount of ferric dosing at the water treatment works. Several other schemes for point source treatment or site protection outside of the Stour catchment were described, some of which are partnered. WxW are also looking into possible Constructed Farm Wetlands, which are often on a much smaller scale but can have a huge impact on the local water course. These projects often look at in-ditch/swale management and sediment traps alongside classic wetland options. One project is looking at a possible constructed wetland at Stour Provost Farm, south of Gillingham which is a Dorset Council farm. This is in partnership with FWAG SW as part of the Stour Headwaters project. The wetland will improve the WQ of a ditch system draining a Dairy unit and subsequently improve the quality of the Key Brook. Both farm-only and farm-and-river treatment are being considered. Water sampling throughout the winter 19/20 and a study will be carried to investigate with trial pits whether an existing farm pond can be used. Delivery is hoped to start early 2020. Discussion: There seems to be high landowner engagement in the area, but more could be involved- can the partnership help with this? In order to establish wetlands, they still have to go through planning permission and the correct abstraction licences applied for. LiDAR data is available through the Historical Watercourse project which focused on the Stour- some data maybe relevant for future projects and useful to WxW. pg. 4 The maintenance of the wetlands: a maintenance plan is being pulled together but the wetlands can have a 20-30yr life span before they need large scale maintenance such as dredging. In the meantime, ongoing grounds maintenance would be costed out for 2 or 3 days a year for the woodland and grassland. Dorset Council have also been implementing biodiversity improvement measures at the farm including barn owl boxes. Regarding engagement, AM is keen to show the multiple benefits of constructed wetland projects and to not just focus on the reduction of P, which is a main driver of water companies. This could be included as part of a communications strategy when trying to engage with the wider audience. Liam offered to assist partners with similar projects. Action All: Any ongoing and future Stour catchment projects that can feed into, or avoid overlap, constructed wetland management scheme to contact Liam Reynolds, WxW. Action AF: Discuss with Liam Reynolds, WxW, about LIDAR data gathered through the Historical Watercourses project undertaken along the main channel of the Stour river and how this could be useful to the constructed wetlands project. Action AQ: Check existing data sets held by the Natural Environment Team at Dorset Council, in particular Great Crested Newts, to be feed into the constructed Wetlands project and to FWAG SW. Action ES: Write up an article on WxW Constructed Wetlands for the Winter newsletter. 3. Catchment Plan Update With Natalie now in place, it is a good opportunity to review and update the Stour catchment plan as previously agreed, with steer from partners. Discussion notes: Who uses the plan and what for? Useful tool to pitch to businesses for engaging them in improvement projects; to develop the ‘offer’ businesses may be interested in. Cross-Dorset and showing how adjustments to working methods could have a positive impact.- e.g. sourcing low-N barley for a brewery: currently out of Dorset but, with support from advisors, could be from within catchment & contribute to improvement aims. Farms- linked through catchment advisors Advisors & project managers- useful tool to help contextualise work: what is going on around my project? Reference for a variety of plans & strategies, including EA catchment plan, Local Plan consultation responses, planning applications (directing compensation etc). Provides opportunities for public engagement around attitudes to water, flooding etc. Influences and is influenced by behaviour change curve, political environment etc. Used to direct and group (if appropriate) applications for future funding for projects (acts as a ‘wish list’ of projects which would derive benefits for the catchment); also to justify funding bids- ‘this project is a strategic aspiration which has been identified
