This afternoon we host our first home game of the new year against Shortwood United. As there was a full programme on Monday, there have been no midweek games and so we still sit three points and two places behind Shortwood. It therefore looks like being a close game, but the Citizens have not drawn a home game yet this season and it therefore looks like it will be an exciting match as well! Shortwood played Slimbridge on Monday with an interesting 4-4 scoreline as the result, whilst Winchester beat Totton at the Testwood Stadium by three goals to one to add to the festive cheer. Following today's match we now embark on three away games in seven days. We travel to Evesham on Wednesday 11th, to Larkhall on Saturday 14th and then the shorter trip way to Sholing for the Hampshire Senior Cup quarter final on Tuesday 17th. There’s plenty of football to watch if you are prepared to travel! Enjoy the game! Paul Murray -Chairman Darren Burdle R.I.P. We are shocked and saddened to hear of the untimely and sudden passing of our former coach Darren Burdle on 19th December. Our thoughts are with his family and friends. Darren’s playing career was spent at Esso Fawley, Brockenhurst, Lymington Town, Blackfield & Langley, BAT, Brendon and Folland Sports. A holder of the UEFA B Licence, he went on to coach at Follands, Hamble Club, Winchester City, Lymington Town and Sholing. He will be sadly missed amongst the football family. 4 The players and the fans were gutted at the final whistle. 21 OUR SPONSORS City's Cup Honours List City's League Honours List F.A. As we start the year 2017 it is worth reflecting on what Winchester football club have achieved in 2016. He said when the penalty was given in the 92nd At the start of the year we were still in two cup competitions, and undoubtedly minute, “When I heard the whistle, I thought the reaching the final of the Hampshire Senior Cup with victories against Eastleigh, referee had blown for full-time. To be fair to him, it Sholing and Fleet, plus making further progress in the league cup, with was a brave decision to give it.” postponements thrown in meant that it was quite a challenge to get our league programme completed without playing three games a week. However, we reached the playoffs and although we lost to Banbury in the semi final this was easily our best We’ve had a little bit of luck, but I thought we ever season at this level. deserved to win at Bideford. They’re a big, strong side and their fans are vocal as well. I was proud of our lads for the way they dealt with it. Some of At the start of this season we lost several players and with manager Paul Masters our football was as good as we’ve played. resigning shortly before the start of the season we had to recruit his replacement Ian Saunders at short notice. We travelled with as skimpy a squad as you can get and to come away with Ian brought players he knew from his previous role at Petersfield and his Army that result was huge for us." contacts, but it took time for the players to work well together as a team and a disappointing start to the league campaign saw them at one time near the relegation zone, although things have begun to pick up as we have moved up to a mid-table Ian declined to comment on the Wimborne Town match except to say that position with the performances beginning to improve. he was 'disappointed'. We also won through three rounds of both the F. A. Cup and F. A. Trophy beating National League South club 4-0 in the former competition, and three away games in He did comment, however, over the speculation concerning Warren Bentley the latter. We are also in the quarter finals of the Hampshire Senior Cup as we go and said, “I’d give my right arm for someone like Warren but, let’s be honest, into 2017 there is still plenty to play for. he’s Gosport’s top scorer and, in my opinion, it would be remiss of them to ….................................................................................................................................... let him go. But, if they do, I’m sure he will go to a more appropriate level.
