The Chairman's Notes Darren Burdle R.I.P.

This afternoon we host our first home game of the new year against Shortwood United. As there was a full programme on Monday, there have been no midweek games and so we still sit three points and two places behind Shortwood. It therefore looks like being a close game, but the Citizens have not drawn a home game yet this season and it therefore looks like it will be an exciting match as well!

Shortwood played Slimbridge on Monday with an interesting 4-4 scoreline as the result, whilst Winchester beat Totton at the Testwood Stadium by three goals to one to add to the festive cheer.

Following today's match we now embark on three away games in seven days. We travel to Evesham on Wednesday 11th, to Larkhall on Saturday 14th and then the shorter trip way to Sholing for the Hampshire Senior Cup quarter final on Tuesday 17th. There’s plenty of football to watch if you are prepared to travel!

Enjoy the game!

Paul Murray -Chairman

Darren Burdle R.I.P. We are shocked and saddened to hear of the untimely and sudden passing of our former coach Darren Burdle on 19th December. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.

Darren’s playing career was spent at Esso Fawley, Brockenhurst, Lymington Town, Blackfield & Langley, BAT, Brendon and Folland Sports.

A holder of the UEFA B Licence, he went on to coach at Follands, Hamble Club, Winchester City, Lymington Town and Sholing.

He will be sadly missed amongst the football family. 4 The players and the fans were gutted at the final whistle. 21

Because of the early print dates for the Christmas Malcolm Clarke programme we have not been able to publish Ian's thoughts on the Bideford match until now. As we start the year 2017 it is worth reflecting on what Winchester football club have achieved in 2016.

He said when the penalty was given in the 92nd At the start of the year we were still in two cup competitions, and undoubtedly minute, “When I heard the whistle, I thought the reaching the final of the Hampshire Senior Cup with victories against Eastleigh, referee had blown for full-time. Malcolm's Welcome

We welcome Shortwood to Winchester for this afternoon’s game. The two clubs first met in the 2012/13 season with Shortwood winning 2-1 at Winchester on 15th December 2012 and 4-0 at Shortwood on 20th April 2013. However, we came from behind to win last season’s corresponding game with second half goals from Matt Benham and Adam Roberts giving us victory in windy conditions after Shortwood had led at the interval.

We have played at Shortwood’s ground twice in 2016. Firstly on the final day of last season we drew 1-1 in a game in which we rested several players with playoffs in mind. In this game Craig Feeney levelled from the penalty spot with four minutes remaining after the home team were again 1-0 ahead at the interval, although we were extremely lucky to survive a penalty appeal in added on time as a result of a clear handball. Earlier this season Andrew Jenkinson gave us a 2nd minute lead (only the 2nd time in our first 11 league games that we scored first), but two second half goals gave Shortwood victory.

Shortwood are one of two senior clubs in Nailsworth, Forest Green are the other, and a place of that size has done very well to have two clubs at the level they are, with Forest Green reaching the Conference National playoffs last season and doing well this season.

I planned to go to Shortwood’s game at Hounslow in the 1986/87 season, but the match was postponed due to the fact that fog meant that the visitors were unable to leave Gloucestershire.

Many people remember Shortwood from their superb F. A. Cup run of 2013/14 when they won through five rounds beating Aldershot on the way, before losing to Port Vale in a televised match.

They are in their fifth season as a Southern League club and have finished in the top half of the table in each of the previous four. Prior to joining the Southern League they played in the Gloucestershire County League from 1975 to 1982 finishing champions once and runners up twice, before joining the Hellenic League. They were in fact relegated from the Premier Division of that league in their first season, but returned to the top flight at the first attempt, and this time they had a successful return, finishing as champions of the division. They finished as champions twice and runners up six times before joining the Southern League.

They reached the quarter finals of the F. A. Vase in 2011/12 losing to Herne Bay.

Their reserve team play in the Hellenic League Division 1 West and this is their fourth season in the division.

It was nice to go to both the Banbury and Bishops Cleeve games and to see four Winchester goals in each game and to get to know more people from the club. 18 7 History of Shortwood United F.C. Winchester City 7 Slimbridge 0

Shortwood United Football Club was formed in 1900 and since then By Malcolm Clarke have played at 4 different grounds, Nailsworth Playing Field, Table Land, Wallow Green and finally at their current ground, Meadowbank.

The club has been at Meadowbank since 1972, which includes an all weather training area opened by the late Ted Croker. Floodlights were installed in 1989 with a match versus Swindon Town. Gradual improvements over the years culminated in a major enhancement in 2009 to meet ground grading criteria future promotions.

League football was commenced in the Stroud League where following continued success during the 1970s promotion was gained to the Northern Senior and then the Gloucestershire County League. Promotion to the Hellenic league was achieved in 1981 only to be relegated in their first season but finishing runners up the following year ensured promotion straight back. In 1983 they won the Hellenic Division One Cup and G.F.A. Trophy and in the following year won the Hellenic League. It was a further six years until success was realised again when the treble of League winners, G.F.A. W A.F.C.Totton 1 Winchester City 3 An alternative view of our visit to Totton By Richard Hayter By the Sydenham's Football League Secretary – John Gorman

For the second festive season in succession came a journey to Testwood Park to see the local derby between A.F.C. Totton and Winchester, two Clubs whose seasons are both looking for improvement. Winchester, with a vastly different line-up to last season and a new Manager appointed virtually as the season started, have taken time to find their feet though a good run of results was halted by a home defeat by Wimborne over Christmas. This however is “small beer” compared to the home side’s problems, who are suffering or have suffered financial straits, changes of personnel behind the scenes and a number of Managers though they did not help themselves by taking an inordinate time to choose the latest incumbent.

Winchester came into the game safely ensconced in mid-table whilst Totton were only one place above the relegation spots, though looking relatively safe given the results to date for both Bridgwater and Wantage.

On a thankfully bright sunny afternoon, given the rain of the previous twenty four hours, both sides showed a willingness to get forward with Gosney soon proving a thorn in the Winchester defence. His ability to go past the full back and cross at speed is a distinct asset but all too often a lack of blue shirts in the area nullified the threat. Both sides were keeping the game open, though probably giving the ball away too often for their managers’ liking, and it was perhaps against the run of play that the visitors took the lead.

A very good win against a hard working Totton team, who slightly edged the Craig Feeney collected the ball on the left side of midfield and was allowed to run to far diagonally across the field – though given his pace he is difficult to challenge – and though first half. Fisher’s seeming zero tolerance towards dissent did not help the game. This can be a good thing but was much overplayed on this occasion and resulted in more yellow cards than the game warranted or the teams deserved.
