winchestercityfc “THE CITIZENS POST” DAVO’S DIARY

Good afternoon and a warm welcome to Shortwood United for this afternoons eagerly anticipated league match, we are always made most welcome by Shortwood when we visit their ground and we hope they have a pleasant stay and safe journey home afterwards. Our game on the 1st day of the season was enjoyable for us with a 4-2 win and a hat trick for Coxy, they have performed brilliantly recently taking points off Bideford and Bristol Manor Farm and beating Swindon and so we know what a tough game it will be today, a repeat of the 1st day of the season would be great, we know it will be a very tough game though.

What a horrible time it’s been kicking our heels for nearly 3 weeks!! From being in 3rd place we have dropped several places although we now have level games with most teams and games in hand to potentially go above a few sides above us and into the play offs, we are 3 points from 2nd place at this stage of the season, I think most would have bitten your arm off to be in that position, watching the results come in and scouting games has been horribly frustrating but we are right in the mix, we just need to hit the ground running again starting today, followed by 2 local derbies over Christmas with Wimborne and Totton which will be great games to be involved in as well! Let’s hope we can carry on from where we left off with 4 wins in a row, we have trained extremely hard at every opportunity and in various different locations to ensure we kept the lads ticking over! We are all excited to get back on the pitch though.

Player news, we at last had every player available but unfortunately Rob Carr had a niggle at training this week and so we will see how he fares for Saturday, other than that we have selection headaches and tough decisions to make, so we will be ready for the game that’s for certain.

One final thing to say to all our supporters, thank you for all of your efforts since I joined the club and I wish you all a happy Christmas and a very happy new year that hopefully we can all enjoy together! I am excited about what we are capable of and I hope that we can fulfil that potential that I feel this side has.

Up the Citizens!

Davo

“THE CITIZENS POST” CHAIRMAN’S COMMENTS

It has been three weeks since we were last involved in league action! That was way back on 2nd December when we beat Evesham 2 nil. That win gave us 13 points from the last six games and we were on a roll. It is unfortunate that we were able to capitalize on that run, but it is what it is and the lads will be glad to be back playing in the league this afternoon. Craig will have been working hard to keep them fit and sharp and ready to go again at 3pm today.

We welcome Shortwood here to the Simplyhealth City Ground for today’s match. They were beaten by Larkhall on Wednesday night but this followed two good 2-2 draws against Bristol Manor Farm and Bideford. And before that they beat Swindon Supermarine 3-1 on December 5th. This means that Shortwood have played four league games in the time we have played none.

Have a great Christmas on Monday and we will see you at Wimborne on Boxing Day (KO 3pm) and then here at home on New Year’s Day against our close neighbours AFC Totton.

Merry Christmas,

Paul Murray Chairman Winchester City Football Club

“THE CITIZENS POST” AFC TOTTON FIXTURE

FROM EVERYBODY AT WINCHESTER CITY FOOTBALL CLUB:

“THE CITIZENS POST” IN THE OPPOSITION DUGOUT… SHORTWOOD UNITED CLUB HISTORY Shortwood United Football Club was formed in 1900 and since then have played at 4 different grounds, Nailsworth Playing Field, Table Land, Wallow Green and finally at our current ground, Meadowbank.

The club has been at Meadowbank since 1972, and includes an all-weather training area opened by the late Ted Croker. Gradual improvements over the years culminated in a major enhancement in 2009 to meet ground grading criteria for any future promotions.

League football was commenced in the Stroud League where following continued success during the 1970s promotion was gained to the Northern Senior and then the Gloucestershire County League. Promotion to the Hellenic league was achieved in 1981 only to be relegated in our first season but finishing runners up the following year ensured promotion straight back. In 1983 we won the Hellenic Division One Cup and GFA Trophy and in the following year won the Hellenic League. It was a further six years until success was realised again when the treble of League winners, GFA Trophy and Stroud Charity Cup was completed.

The 2007/08 season started a resurgence in Shortwood’s fortunes in finishing 5th in the league and winning the supplementary cup, defeating Ardley 4-2 in the final. The subsequent season pushed our success even further when following a good run in the FA Cup and semi-finalists in the League Cup, we pressed the eventual Champions Hungerford to the final day of the season where we lost out on goal difference after amassing 99 pts and scoring 99 goals. Shortwood’s fine form continued into the next season when they again finished second in the league to Almondsbury, and runners up in the GFA Trophy again to Almondsbury, had good FA Cup and Vase runs and reached the final of the Floodlit cup. Having lost the away leg 3-0 to Reading Town they produced one of the most exciting comebacks and entertaining matches ever seen at Meadowbank where the score remained at 0-0 till the 67th minute when the deadlock was broken and Shortwood ran out 5-0 winners (AET).

Shortwood’s league campaign in 2011 was a disappointment by their own high standards, but more silverware was added in the shape of the GFA Trophy after a 1-0 win over Tuffley Rovers in the final.

2011-12 season, however, was pivotal in the Club’s history! Not only did they reach the quarter final of the FA Vase, they also reached the final of the Hellenic League Floodlit Cup and the GFA

“THE CITIZENS POST”

Trophy Final. Most important was their league position where they finished 2nd by 1 point behind Oxford City Nomads. With Nomad’s not applying for promotion, and with Shortwood filling all the relevant criteria, they were promoted to the Southern League for the first time in their history!

The 2012-13 season was again a successful one. Following a disappointing early exit from the FA cup the club had a good run in the FA Trophy including a magnificent away victory at premier league side Weymouth on the way. In their first season in the Southern League they finished a creditable eighth position.

The 2013-14 season saw Shortwood progress further in the FA Cup than ever before! Early wins over Egham and Aylesbury put them up against Conference South outfit Dorchester and a 1-0 away win, and a further 1-0 win at Didcot put them into uncharted waters of the fourth qualifying round where they drew Conference side Aldershot at Meadowbank. A late, but deserved, equaliser gave them a replay and a heroic 2-1 win sparked wild celebrations. A home draw pitted Shortwood against League 1 side Port Vale in front of a record crowd of 1,247 plus a live television audience courtesy of BT Sport. Shortwood bowed out – but with the plaudits their cup run earned ringing in their ears.

The league season was also highly successful with a sixth placed finish, one point outside the play-off positions.

2014-15 failed to reach the heights of the previous season with many players moving on to higher things but for most of the season a play-off place looked possible until a decline in form towards the end of the season resulted in an 11th place finish.

2015 -16 continued Shortwood’s continued stability in the Southern League as they finished the season 7th in the table with 78 points and the end of the season saw the end of an era as joint Manager John Evans retired after 20 seasons involvement with Shortwood – and the club moved forward with Alex Sykes now in sole charge. 2016-17 Was a strange season with the Wood exiting the FA Cup and the FA Trophy at the first hurdle and showing inconsistent league form but despite that they managed to finish a more than respectable 9th. Paul ‘Des’ Meredith took over the management reins at the start of season 2017-18.

We welcome Shortwood to Winchester for this afternoon’s game which will be our last before Christmas, so I would like to wish you all the best for the festive season and let us hope we can celebrate with victory today. N the opening day of this season we won 4-2 at Shortwood with Past Cox scoring a second half hat- trick after Oli Bailey had given us a first half lead. However, a new look Shortwood team under new manager Paul Meredith scored two late consolation goals through Levi Cox and Jordan Morris, having earlier hit the underside of the bar when the game was still goalless. To date Shortwood’s league form has been inconsistent, but their first three league games of December saw them pick up seven league points which included games against Swindon Supermarine and Bideford and they also won through three rounds of the F A Trophy including a victory against Premier Division outfit Frome so although they are in the lower half of the table we will not underestimate their capabilities in today’s game. Last season’s corresponding match was an exciting affair in which we won 4-3 thanks to a hat-trick from Craig Feeney and a further goal from Stuart Mott, with Nick Humphreys, Ross Langworthy and Jake Lee scoring for Shortwood in a game in which Winchester were never behind and led for the most part, but with both teams looking likely to score virtually every time they attacked could easily have finished very differently. he two clubs first met in the 2012/13 season with a Shortwood winning 2-1 at Winchester on 15th December 2012 and 4-0 at Shortwood on 20th April 2013. However we came from behind to win the corresponding game of the 2015/16 season, with second half goals from Matt Benham and Adam Roberts giving us victory in windy conditions after Shortwood had led at the interval. We played at Shortwood’s ground twice in 2016. Firstly, on the final day of the 2015/15 t season we drew 1- 1 in a game in which we rested several players with playoffs in mind. In this game Craig Feeney levelled from the penalty spot with four minutes remaining after the home team were again 1-0 ahead at the interval, although we were extremely lucky to survive a penalty appeal in added on time as a result of a clear handball. Earlier last season Andrew Jenkinson gave us a 2nd minute lead (only the 2nd time in our first 11 league games that we scored first), but two second half goals gave Shortwood victory. Shortwood are one of two senior clubs in Nailsworth, Forest Green are the other, and a place of that size has done very well to have two clubs at the level they are, with Forest Green this season playing in the football league for the first time having been promoted last season. I planned to go to Shortwood’s game at Hounslow in the 1986/87 season, but the match was postponed due to the fact that fog meant that the visitors were unable to leave Gloucestershire. Many people remember Shortwood from their superb F A Cup run of 2013/14 when they won through five rounds beating Aldershot on the way, before losing to Port Vale in a televised match. They are in their sixth season as a Southern League club and have finished in the top half of the table in each of the previous five. Prior to joining the Southern League they played in the Gloucestershire County League from 1975 to 1982 finishing champions once and runners up twice, before joining the Hellenic League. They were in fact relegated from the Premier Division of that league in their first season, but returned to the top flight at the first attempt, and this time they had a successful return, finishing as champions of the division. They in fact finished as champions twice and runners up six times before joining the Southern League. They reached the quarter finals of the F A Vase in 2011/12 losing to Herne Bay. Their reserve team play in the Hellenic League Division 1 West and this is their fifth season in the division.

“THE CITIZENS POST” MATCH REPORT WCFC 3-3 BASINGSTOKE TOWN BY MALCOLM CLARKE

Winchester eliminated holders Basingstoke from the Hampshire Senior Cup on penalties after the teams were level at 3-3 after 90 minutes.

Winchester gave a debut to young striker Ben Sunley and there was also a starting place for IK Hill with Oli Bailey, Josh Harfield, Adam Tomasso, Andy Jenkinson and Rob Carr not featuring and Ben Williamson on the bench, Basingstoke who are one division above Winchester did not include main strikers Ben Wright and Sam Argent and they are managed by the experienced Terry Brown.

Early on both teams had efforts blocked at the expense of corners, while Winchester's Liam Gilbert came close with a powerfully struck effort. Basingstoke however took the lead in the 28th minute when Sam Smart's cross set up Jack McKnight and Basingstoke went into the interval with a 1-0 lead.

McKnight scored his second nine minutes into the second half, but to their credit Winchester kept battling and Liam Gilbert pulled a goal back midway through the half with a superbly struck shot from distance. By this stage Winchester had introduced Dan Williamson as substitute and he was overlapping to good effect.

Winchester were also giving Basingstoke problems with dead ball situations and from a free kick Jamie Barron hit the underside of the bar and a further free kick with 14 minutes to a free kick into the box led to the equalizer. There was debate about whether Rob Flooks or Simba Mlambo got the final touch was an item for debate. although Flooks was eventually given the goal, although he was replaced immediately afterwards by player manager Craig Davis.

Three minutes from the end of normal time a long throw enabled Joe Cook to score the third to complete a great fight back. but when the three minutes of added on time had appeared to have been used up Basingstoke scored a last-ditch goal following a corner with Callum Bunting the scorer,

This led to a penalty shoot-out in which both teams missed their first two spot kicks. However, the next nine penalties were converted with Jamie Barron, Joe Hayward, Joe Cook, IK Hill and Pat Cox scoring for Winchester before Ryan Pryce saved Basingstoke's fifth to send Winchester through much to the joy of their fans.
