6 CYCLE RIDE –SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 14 TH There are normally four separate notices about the Suffolk Historic Churches Trust’s Cycle Ride, so we thought it useful to streamline matters and give details in one sin- gle notice. The event takes place on Saturday September 14 th , and virtually all the county’s churches will be open to visitors from 9-00 am through to 5-00 pm . (Indeed you could even go outside the county’s borders, and cycle in Essex, say, or Norfolk. The idea originated in Suffolk, but has spread across the country. You are invited to make a day of it, or indeed just to put in a couple of hours cycling around our beautiful churches. You can take a rural ride, moving from village to vil- lage, or you can concentrate your efforts in an urban environment. A tour of Ipswich churches, fitting in the home match at 3-00 at Portman Road may appeal to one or two! For the rural rides there is plenty of choice of relatively traffic-free peaceful lanes. You can make it a leisurely family day out, or you can make it a macho challenge and hurtle around as many churches as possible. Wherever you go, you are offered re- freshments. The various representatives, who have all the necessary forms* are: Great Bealings Norman Porter 01473 735565 Little Bealings Jan Lelijveld 01473 626654 Culpho Shirley Grey 01473 735594 Margaret Gornall 01728 747605 Playford Alison Baker 01473 620964

*The paperwork consists of: 1. Stickers for your clothes/bike 2. A list of the churches which are open 3. A sponsorship form. Do try to get friends and family to support your efforts. The money goes to the Historic Churches Trust, but half of it comes back to your own church –and –you can be assured that all four churches need all they can get. Last year £155,000 was raised across the county.

Your organisers need the support of church-sitters. These kind people not only sit at a table and record the names of visitors to the church, but also offer them refresh- ments and generally make them welcome. Your parish representative would be delighted to hear from you if you could spare an hour sometime between 9.00 and 5.00 pm

CULPHO HARVEST SERVICE As a result of Bishop Nigel's farewell service scheduled for the afternoon of 20th Oc- tober, Culpho's Harvest service will now be at 10.00 am on Sunday October 20th in Culpho church. This has been made possible because Little Bealings have kindly agreed to forgo their own 10.00 am service and support Harvest at Culpho. The col- lection will be shared by Little Bealings and Culpho churches.

TOWN LECTURE The Families who lived in Christchurch Mansion - Marjorie Carter Museum Street Methodist Church, Ipswich Thursday 12 September 2013 1.00pm to 1.50pm Three families occupied Christchurch Mansion from the time it was built in the mid- sixteenth century until its sale at the end of the nineteenth, and each of them left their mark on the house. All families have their secrets, sorrows and scandals, and the Withypolls, Devereux and Fonneraus were no exceptions. This illustrated talk ex- plores something of their lives and times in the continuing story of Ipswich. Tea and biscuits are available from 12.30 the kettle will be on the hob at 12.30pm.Although admission is free, a retiring collection of £2.00 will be appreciated. This is to defray expenses incurred in hosting the series. More details can be obtained from [email protected] www.ipswich-arts.org.uk or Tel. 01473 836973
