SHARMA* Zoological Survey of India, Kolkata INTRODUCTION The Shiwaliks form the southernmost belt of the Himalayan range (the lower and upper Himalayas being the other two) and have an average elevation of 900-1200 m. At present, the Shiwaliks include the entire southwestern foothills of Himalayas from Indus River in the Northwest to the Brahamaputra River in the Northeast. The Shiwalik eco-region extends from about 29°33' N latitude and 74°80' E longitude. These ranges represent the southern most zone of about 8-40 km width and about 800 km length of Himalayas. The Shiwaliks of Northwest States spread over an area of more than three million hectares and represent most fragile ecosystem of the country. In the north, these hills fall in the districts of Udhampur, Kathua, Jammu and ultimately merging with Reasi and Poonch districts of Jammu & Kashmir. They extend in the southwest to across parts of Chamba, Kangra, Bilaspur, Una, Hamirpur, Solan and Sirmour districts in Himachal Pradesh; Guradaspur, Hoshiarpur, Nawashahar and Roopnagar in Punjab; Union territory of Chandigarh; Ambala, Panchkula, Yamunanagar in Haryana; Dehradun, Haridwar, Udhamsinghnagar in Uttaranchal and Saharanpur and Rampur in Uttar Pradesh. Out of three million hectares, Punjab Shiwaliks accounts for 0.14 million hectares where as Himachal 1.14 million hectares. The Shiwalik ranges or the outer Himalayas gradually rise from the Indo-Gangetic Plains with a gentle slope of about 3-4 degrees till they touch a rugged topography and bare steep slopes up to an altitude of about 1000 m. -

Supplementary Materials Neodiprion sawflies: life history description and utility as a model for parent-offspring conflict To provide context for our comparative analysis of Neodiprion clutch-size traits, we provide relevant life history details (reviewed in Coppel and Benjamin 1965; Knerer and Atwood 1973; Wilson et al. 1992; Knerer 1993). Adult females emerge from cocoons with a full complement of mature eggs, find a suitable host, and attract males via a powerful pheromone. Shortly after mating, females use their saw-like ovipositors to embed their eggs within pine needles. While females of some species tend to lay their full complement of eggs on a single branch terminus, females of other species seek out multiple branches or trees for oviposition. Overall, female oviposition behavior is highly species-specific and, in some cases, diagnostic (Ghent 1959). Adult Neodiprion are non-feeding and short-lived (~2-4 days), dying soon after mating and oviposition. After hatching from eggs, Neodiprion larvae of many species form feeding aggregations that remain intact to varying degrees across 4-7 feeding instars, depending on the sex and the species. As larvae defoliate pine branches, they migrate to new branches and sometimes to new host trees (Benjamin 1955, Smirnoff 1960). During these migrations, colonies may undergo fission and fusion events (Codella and Raffa 1993, Codella and Raffa 1995, Costa and Loque 2001). Thus, while initial colony size corresponds closely to egg-clutch size, larvae are highly mobile and their dispersal behavior has the potential to substantially alter colony size (Codella and Raffa 1995). Beyond having a variable and well-documented natural history, Neodiprion provides an excellent test case for examining coevolution of female egg-laying and larval grouping behaviors because, as is likely the case for many insects, feeding in groups could confer both costs and benefits to the larvae (Codella and Raffa 1995, Heitland and Pschorn-Walcher 1993). -

Backhuys Publishers, Leiden. xlviii + ix 756 pp. INTRODUCTION Bombyliids, or bee flies as they are commonly called, comprise a diverse and speciose assemblage of brachycerous flies. With more than 4,500 species known worldwide, they are one of the largest families of Diptera, surpassed in numbers of species only by the Tipulidae (14,000), Tachinidae (9,200), Syrphidae (5,800), Asilidae (5,600), Ceratopogonidae (5,300), and Dolichopodidae (5,100). They occur in a variety of habitats and ecosystems (from ca. 10 km from the Arctic Ocean in Canada through all latitudes as far south as Tierra del Fuego; and at altitudes from over 3500 m in the Himalayas to 200 m below sea level at the shores of the Dead Sea). They are found on all continents except Antarctica and also many oceanic islands. The family has a remarkable range in size (from some Exoprosopa with wingspans of more than 60 mm to the tiny Apolysis that can be as small as 1.5 mm in length) and variety of shapes (e.g., Systropus mimicking ammophiline wasps; Bombomyia mimic- king bumblebees). The adults of the larger species are powerful and agile fliers, rivaling the syrphid flies in their ability to hover and move in all directions while in flight. With many species possessing colorful patterns of stripes and spots on the wings and bodies, bee flies are often some of the most striking in appearance of all the Diptera. Individuals can often be seen either resting in the open on trails or on rocks or twigs sunning themselves, or feeding on a variety of flowering plants. -

St::ttns of 15 Antioch Insects Listed in Notice of 75 Review by the U.S. Fish "l.nd Wildlife Service INTRODUCTION The sand dune formation east of Antioch, Contra Costa County, California, comprised the largest riverine dune system in California. Biogeographically, this formation was unique because it supported a northern extension of plants and animals of desert, rather than coastal, affinities. Geologists believe that the dunes were relicts of the most recent glaciation of the Sierra Nevada, probably originating 10,000 to 25,000 years ago, with the sand derived from the supratidal floodplain of the combined Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers. The ice age climate in the area is thought to have been cold but arid. Presumably summertime winds sweeping through the Carquinez Strait across the glacial-age floodplains would have picked up the fine-grained sand and redeposited it to the east and southeast, thus creating the dune fields of eastern Contra Costa County. -

(Osmia bicornis L.) is a species of a solitary bee, which pollinates many wild and cultivated plants. A total of 900 cocoons containing mature individuals of Osmia rufa L. (450 females and 450 males of a known weight), were placed in each of four habitats (orchard, mixed forest, hay meadow and arboretum of the Dendrology Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences at Kórnik). These bees were provided with artificial nests made of the stems of common reed. The following parameters were calculated: reproduction dynamics, total number of chambers built by females, mean number of breeding chambers per reed tube and mean num- ber of cocoons per tube. included in the analysis were also the nectar flowers and weather conditions recorded in each of the habitats studied. General linear mixed models indicated that the highest number of chambers was recorded in the hay meadow (6.6 per tube). However, the number of cocoons per tube was similar in the hay meadow, forest and orchard (4.5–4.8 per tube) but was significantly lower in the arboretum (3.0 cocoons per tube on average).
