A SPACE FOR CONNECTION: A PHENOMENOLOGICAL INQUIRY ON MUSIC LISTENING AS LEISURE by JOSEPH ALFRED PATE IV (Under the Direction of Corey W. Johnson) ABSTRACT This polyvocal text leveraged Post-Intentional Phenomenology (Vagle, 2010) to trouble, open up, and complexify understanding of the lived leisure experience (Parry & Johnson, 2006) of connection with and through music listening. Music listening was foregrounded as one horizon within the aural soundscape that affords deeply meaningful and significant experiences for many. Past scholarship within the Leisure Studies literature has primarily attended to the impact and relevancy of music in the lives of adolescents. This study focused on engagement with music of five adults, accessing phenomenology as both a philosophical and methodological lens to look along (Lewis, 1990) this lived-experience. Using multiple voices and styles of representation, this polyvocal work challenged traditional ways of knowing by inviting listening, music, and voice to serve as additional data embedded throughout its discursive representation. Accessing Bachelard‟s (1990) phenomenology of the resonation-reverberation doublet revealed five partial, fleeting, and tentative manifestations (Vagle, 2010) of this lived leisure experience, which included: Getting Lost: Felt Resonation and Embodiment; I‟m Open: Openness, Receptivity, and Enchantment; Serendipitous Moments; The Found Mirror: Oh There You Are; and Cairns and Echoes: The Lustering Potency of Song. Ultimately, music appeared to speak to so as to speak for participants, providing musical affirmation and sustenance throughout their lives. THE STEEPWATER BAND : SHAKE YOUR FAITH Diamond Day Records is very excited to announce the release of The Steepwater Band’s 6th full-length studio album SHAKE YOUR FAITH. The LP features 11 brand new TSB tracks, and is slated for release on Friday, April 1st via Double 180 Gram Vinyl, Compact Disc and Digital Download. The album was recorded last winter at Crushtone Studios, in the shadows of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, in Cleveland, Ohio. Shake Your Faith was produced by the band along with seasoned rock studio veteran Jim Wirt, who has also worked with the likes of Fiona Apple, Incubus and the Buffalo Killers. As with most TSB albums, the sound and songwriting on Shake Your Faith has grown and expanded, yet retained the true nature of the band. It’s the first TSB studio record in over 4 years and the first to include “new” guitarist Eric Saylors. The Roots Report: Who’s Your Favorite Beatle? Okee dokee folks… I am going to commit Beatle’s heresy. At least I think that I am. Often, folks will list their favorite Beatles starting with John Lennon and ending with Ringo Starr. Paul McCartney comes in second and George Harrison, third. That is not the way I see it. My list starts with George then it’s Ringo, followed by Paul. John comes in a distant last. I think that George was the underappreciated Beatle. Ringo was and still is entertaining and fun, and is the only Beatle that I have seen perform live. I like McCartney, but sometimes his music can be annoying. I think some of the best music he did was with Wings. Then there is John. I like a couple of his songs, but I am just not much of a Lennon fan. And of course he gave us Yoko Ono, and that is enough of a reason to put him last. Hey, we are all entitled to our opinions and that is mine! Anyway, why am I even talking about this? On Saturday, October 14 at the Seaport Inn & Marina in Fairhaven, Harrisfest 2017 will be taking place. Harrisfest is billed as “A Tribute to George Harrison and musical concert event.” Scheduled to perform are Greg Hawkes (of The Cars), Tom and Trish Kelly, Walrus Gumboot, The Oh Nos, Crash Land Band, Studio Two Beatles Tribute, Thatcher Harrison, and David Tessier with His All Star Band of All Stars.
