2017 Bronko Nagurski Trophy Watch List Unveiled
July 13, 2017 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Steve Richardson [email protected] 214-870-6516 2017 BRONKO NAGURSKI TROPHY WATCH LIST UNVEILED DALLAS (FWAA) — The 2017 Bronko Nagurski Trophy Watch List boasts 103 defensive standouts from all 10 Division I FBS conferences, including four returning players from last season’s Football Writers Association of America All-America team. Christian Wilkins, a defensive tackle for defending national champion Clemson, and Florida State defensive back Tavarus McFadden are the only 2016 FWAA first-teamers on the list. Two other 2016 second-teamers – Houston defensive tackle Ed Oliver and Virginia linebacker Micah Kiser – are included along with NIU defensive back Shawun Lurry, a 2015 First-Team FWAA All-America player. The Atlantic Coast Conference led all conferences with 20 players on the watch list, followed by the Big Ten (16), SEC (14), Pac-12 (13), Big 12 (11), American Athletic (10), Sun Belt (6), Mountain West (5), Independents (3), Mid-American (3) and Conference USA (2). The list includes 30 defensive backs, 29 linebackers, 25 defensive ends and 19 defensive tackles, all vying for the award representing college football’s best defensive player. Players may be added or removed from the watch list during the course of the season. As in previous seasons, the FWAA will announce a National Defensive Player of the Week each Tuesday throughout the season. If not already on the watch list, each week’s honored player will be added at that time. ET, THURSDAY JULY 9, 2015 Augusta, GA (July 9, 2015) - The Augusta Sports Council has announced the preseason watch list for the 2015 Ray Guy Award, which honors the nation’s top collegiate punter. The 25 candidates on the list incorporate a broad spectrum of Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) punters. Tom Hackett (Utah), winner of the 2014 Ray Guy Award, returns to the list along with finalists, Austin Rehkow (Idaho) and JK Scott (Alabama). Returning semifinalists include Cameron Johnston (Ohio State), Drew Kaser (Texas A&M), Alex Kinal (Wake Forest), and Drew Riggleman (Arizona). The number of eligible candidates for this season will grow when the award opens for nominations in September. The complete list of candidates will be released on October 30. In early November, the Ray Guy Award committee will meet to select the ten semi-finalists, who will be announced on November 13. A national body of Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) sports information directors, coaches, media representatives, and previous Ray Guy Award winners will then vote for the top three finalists, to be announced on November 23. After the finalists are named, the voting body will cast ballots again to select the nation’s top punter. The winner will be announced live during The Home Depot College Football Awards airing on ESPN on Thursday, December 10, 2015.

The Wuerffel Trophy, known as “College Football’s Premier Award for Community Service,” is presented annually by the All Sports Association in Fort Walton Beach Florida. Named after 1996 Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Danny Wuerffel from the University of Florida, the Wuerffel Trophy is awarded to the FBS player that best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement. The Atlantic Coast Conference led all conferences with 15 players appearing on the 2015 watch list. Following the ACC are the Big-12 with 10 players, the American Athletic and Sun Belt with 9 each, the SEC and the PAC-12 with 8 each, the Big 10 and Conference-USA with 5 each, and the MAC and Mountain West following with 4 each. All FBS Conferences are represented on the list, as were Independent representatives Notre Dame and United States Military Academy (Army) with 2 and 1 nominees respectively. 2011 Bronko Nagurski Trophy Watch List Unveiled
July 8, 2011 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Steve Richardson [email protected] 972-713-6198 2011 BRONKO NAGURSKI TROPHY WATCH LIST UNVEILED DALLAS (FWAA) – The 2011 Bronko Nagurski Trophy Watch List features the best and brightest of the upcoming season’s defensive players. One of 87 players on the list most likely will receive the Bronko Nagurski Trophy that is awarded annually to the nation’s best defensive player by the Football Writers Association of America and the Charlotte Touchdown Club. Every NCAA Division I Bowl Subdivision Conference and Notre Dame are represented on the list that is pretty evenly divided among linemen, linebackers and defensive backs. Players may be added or deleted from the Bronko Nagurski Watch List during the season. For the 11th straight season, the FWAA will choose a National Defensive Player of the Week. If that player is not on the Watch List, he automatically will be added. The FWAA and the Charlotte Touchdown Club will announce five finalists for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy on Nov. 17. The Bronko Nagurski Trophy winner is chosen from five finalists who are part of the FWAA All-America Team. The FWAA All-America Committee, after voting input from the entire membership, selects the 25- man team and eventually the Bronko Nagurski finalists. Committee members, then by individual ballot, select the winner, the best defensive player in America. The annual Bronko Nagurski Trophy Banquet will be on Dec. 12 at the Westin Hotel in Charlotte, N.C. Besides the 2011 winner being announced, the banquet will also celebrate the recipient of the Bronko Nagurski Legends Award presented by Florida East Coast Railway.
