Northlake City News 3 Northlake Police Officers Couple from Fire Northlake Police Three of Northlake’s police officers, Jay DelRosario, Wojciech Porebski and Krzysztof Gogola, rescued a couple from a house fire. On November 28, at about 10:15 p.m., the police department Traffic Safety Division got a call from a resident about smoke coming from the top of a house in Northlake. The offices arrived before the fire department. Winter Driving Safety They realized that someone was living in the house and forced open the front door. The couple were in the house, which had heavy smoke inside. The officers led them out of the house to safety. The City of Northlake honored the three officers at a recent City Council meeting. Tips The Northlake Police Department Traffic Division would like to give you some winter driving safety tips to remember as you travel in and around town. Stay mindful of the snowplow trucks. The snowplow truck driver’s field of vision is restricted. You may see them, but they may not see you. Allow extra time for travel during the winter months. Watch out for black ice on roads that appear clear but can be treacherous. Take it slow when approaching intersections, off ramps, bridges and shady areas. All are prone to black ice, which is often invisible. Always keep your gas tank at least two-thirds full to help prevent the vehicle’s fuel line from freezing. Always wear a safety belt. If you have any questions or traffic concerns in your area, please contact Sgt. Byars at the Northlake Police Department at 708-531-5755 or email at [email protected]. Thank you. Drive safe. Arrive alive. Don’t be a statistic. LEYDEN BEARS FOOTBALL and CHEERLEADING 2014 REGISTRATION Sunday – March 9, 2014 / 9 am to 3 pm

Northlake City News 7 8 Northlake City News Dollars and Sense By Fred J. Paul Technology is a Money Racket Microsoft has announced that as of April of this year, it will no longer support or offer updates for security for its “Windows XP” program. Everyone will need to upgrade to a newer program. The cost of the new program is expensive enough, but the newer program can not be run on older computers. As a result, the Police Department will need to purchase 27 new computers in order to accommodate the new operating system. We then have to hope that all records transfer over intact and with no glitches, which means we will need to hire IT consultants to work this out over the next several months. Once we get this all settled, it will just be a matter of time until Microsoft announces that the “new” operating program will be phased out and we will have to start all over again. It is not only the expense, but the waste in discarding computer equipment of which only a portion is recycled. It seems that we are fast becoming the slaves to technology rather than having technology work for us. It is odd that a rotary phone from 1940 will still work if plugged into a land line (which are an endangered species), 74 years later, while recent technology is obsolete and unusable after only 8 or 10 years. Is this really progress?

Howard Salverson started with ComEd in 1948 as a lineman and retired in 1995 as a dispatcher while trying to finish the house in his early years, along with 140 E. North Ave. being called out all the time, working 36 hours straight at times to restore Northlake, IL 60164 power. If that wasn't enough, he joined the Northlake fire department in 1951 as www.northlakefuneral.com a volunteer for 17 years, later on an electrical inspector and civil defense for Northlake. [email protected] The Fire Chief, some police officers and just about everyone knew him and Se habla Español liked him. He even volunteered his time for free, with his bucket truck and Mowimy po Polsku another ComEd worker/friend to install the fire department pole and siren. He will be missed big time by family and a lot of Northlake citizens. The 708-562-0044 McDonald's on North and Wolf have a 1959 parade photo with the fire department and Howard is in front on the right. He was old school tough.
