They went to three different countries, rode on four planes, slept overnight on a ferry, and toured around Italy and Greece on many different tour busses. The experience was offered through Hudsonville and Kenowa Hills High Schools. Each of the travelers raised their own funds over the course of the last school year. A day after school got out for summer, 20 Hudsonvillians, including teachers Rechelle Goosen, Robert Henning, and Kelly TenBrock, met and travelled down to O’Hare International Airport in Chicago, Illinois. From there, it was onto a plane, set to land in nine hours in Switzerland. A short transfer to another plane sent them over the Alps to Milan, Italy, where they boarded a bus headed for Verona. After visiting the balcony of the Casa di Giulietta, or the house of Juliet from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, it was back on a tour bus for the group. The following weeks would include a gondola ride through the waterways of Venice, exploration in Florence, tours with local guides through the Colosseum in Rome and the Vatican City, an overnight ferry to Delphi, and several stops while traveling through Greece including Athens, Epidarus, and Mycenae. Architecture teacher Goosen said, “This was a trip of a lifetime for many students - Gondola ride, Colosseum, many churches, and Parthenon left us in awe. Seeing these places was just incredible.” She went on to rave, “The architecture, artwork, statues, and the beautiful landscape was amazing. Rome and Athens had so many sights to see and we were given so much educational information by our guides! I would highly recommend students travel abroad sometime in their lifetime - they won’t regret it!”
