Please kneel or sit for the confession. The Confession of Sins Heavenly Father, we confess that we are born sinners, and can’t free ourselves from this bondage. Daily, we have sinned against you in our thoughts, in our words and in our actions, by what we have done, and what we have failed to do. … For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, please look on us with mercy. Let your face shine upon us and we shall be saved. Amen. The Absolution … … Peace be with you. Amen.

Please share the peace with those around you. Advent Kyrie Saviour of the World Sue Westhorp Jesus, Saviour of the world, come in mercy, set us free, We to help and save us. Let us pray for God to be with us: The Prayer of the Day Thank you, loving heavenly Father, for coming with power to the Virgin Mary and making her the mother of our Lord. Especially for children The First Reading – 2 Samuel 7:1-11,16 God's promise to David 1 After the king was settled in his palace and the Lord had given him rest from all his enemies around him, 2 he said to Nathan the prophet, “Here I am, living in a house of cedar, while the ark of God remains in a tent.” 3 Nathan replied to the king, “Whatever you have in mind, go ahead and do it, for the Lord is with you.” … 4 But that night the word of the Lord came to Nathan, saying: 5 “Go and tell my servant David, ‘This is what the Lord says: Are you the one to build me a house to dwell in? 6 I have not dwelt in a house from the day I brought the Israelites up out of Egypt to this day. I have been moving from place to place with a tent as my dwelling. … 7 Wherever I have moved with all the Israelites, did I ever say to any of their rulers whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel, “Why have you not built me a house of cedar?”’ 8 “Now then, tell my servant David, ‘This is what the Lord Almighty says: I took you from the pasture, from tending the flock, and appointed you ruler over my people Israel. … 9 I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have cut off all your enemies from before you. Now I will make your name great, like the names of the greatest men on earth. 10 And I will provide a place for my people Israel and will plant them so that they can have a home of their own and no longer be disturbed. Wicked people will not oppress them anymore, as they did at the beginning … 11 and have done ever since the time I appointed leaders over my people Israel. I will also give you rest from all your enemies. “The Lord declares to you that the Lord himself will establish a house for you. 16 Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me; your throne will be established forever.’” Response This is the Word of the Lord. The Holy Gospel according to Luke, chapter 1. Glory to you, O Lord. 26 In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, 27 to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you. 29 Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. … 30 But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. 31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.” 34 “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?” … 35 The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. 36 Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. 37 For no word from God will ever fail.” … 38 “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her.

St Paul’s Lutheran Church website: www.stpaulsboxhill.org.au/index.php/ resources/growing-through-times-of-change The Angel Gabriel comes to announce good news: Promise: sheer gift: promise from God … is it enough? Are God’s promises – his Word – enough for you? “You shall name him Jesus (Luke 1:31) for he will save his people from their sins.” (Matt 1:21) He is “Immanuel which means ‘God with us” (Matt 1:23) And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth (John 1:14) For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return there until they have watered the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and succeed in the thing for which I sent it. (Isaiah 55:10-11)

“May it be to me as you have said.” Dare we, in the midst of life, let the pregnant Word be planted in us? Dare we, in all our uncertainty and in all the opposition the world brings against our faith, ask God to be born in us today? O holy Child of Bethlehem Descend to us, we pray Cast out our sin and enter in Be born to us today We hear the Christmas angels The great glad tidings tell O come to us, abide with us Our Lord Emmanuel

The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy *catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Behold, a rose is growing, of loveliest form and grace, as prophets sang, foreknowing; it springs from Jesse’s race, and comes a perfect flower, in midst of coldest winter, at deepest midnight hour. 2. Isaiah had foretold it in words of promise sure, and Mary’s arms enfold it- a gentle maiden pure. Through God’s eternal will this child to her is given at midnight calm and still. 3. This rose, whose fragrance tender with sweetness fills the air, dispels with glorious splendour the darkness everywhere. As human, yet true God, from sin and death he saves us and lightens every load. 4. O Saviour, child of Mary, you felt our human woe; O Saviour, King of glory, you all our weakness know. Lead us at last, we pray, to the full joys of heaven and into endless day. Anon., German, 15th cent. Tr. vv 1-3 Harriet Reynolds Spaeth 1845-1925 v.4 John Caspar Mattes (1914) alt.
