The Merchant City... ...open for trade The Merchant City lies at the heart of Glasgow’s City Centre, where historically the tobacco lairds and traders which once made Glasgow the Second City of the Empire came to do business, socialise and build their townhouses ... and later their warehouses. The area still possesses a remarkable consistency, of materials and rhythm and demonstrates a strong civic pride through the number of buildings adorned with carved coats of arms. Despite the area falling victim to the inner city obsolescence that afflicted so many parts of urban Britain in the Twentieth Century, the Merchant City became the scene of a remarkable public sector led renaissance during the 1980’s and was held up internationally as a successful example of how post industrial architecture can re-make itself if events and political wills conspire - to create new solutions and dynamic partnerships. More recently a large part of the area has been designated the focus of an inter agency programme to repair the fabric of its historic architecture and streets. The Merchant City Townscape Heritage Initiative matches funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund with finance from both Glasgow City Council and Scottish Enterprise Glasgow to enable a phased programme of improvements to buildings -

MERCHANT CITY GLASGOW The Tobacco Lords were the entrepreneurs of 18th century Glasgow who traded with the Americas bringing to Scotland the three ‘evils’ of tobacco, rum and sugar. From Virginia Street and Virginia Court the Tobacco Lords of Glasgow controlled the bulk of the lucrative European market in tobacco, creating for themselves fine houses, offices and warehouses, examples of which can still be seen today. The Tobacco Exchange on Virginia Street, built in 1753, survived until 2003 and its site now features new city style apartments, restaurants and shops. Grave Matters Number 11 Spring 2020 Little did I think when I chose the title Grave Matters for this newsletter how appropriate it would turn out to be as Covid 19 creeps up on us. So far as I know the indexers are well. Some are working from home and/or caring for young children and do not have much time to spare at the moment for other matters; some are busy supporting the less able members of their community and a few are finding themselves with time on their hands and welcome extra indexing. The indexers continue to make progress and the number of records indexed in the last three months is as follows – January 2020 567 February 2020 300 March 2020 456 This brings our database of persons buried or commemorated in the Necropolis to 32006 entries at the end of March 2020. The Necropolis’s First Murder Victim On the 16th June 1853 the entry for the burial of Alexander Boyd a forty-two year old ship’s carpenter gave his cause of death simply as ‘murder’. The case, normally referred to as ‘The New Vennel Murder’, was widely covered in the newspapers of the day. Alexander Boyd had recently returned to Scotland following the death of his mother but leaving his wife and family behind in Valparaiso. He found lodgings with another ship’s carpenter in Finnieston. On Saturday 11th June he met an old friend James Law and the two men went on a pub crawl. That night they were picked up by two women named Mary Hamilton and Ann Young and enticed by them to a house in Croiley’s Land, New Vennel. -
