Archives Collections Guide Updated March 28, 2016 Collection Overview The Gerber/Hart archives focuses its collections on gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and queer life in the Chicago metropolitan area and the Midwest. It contains over 150 collections of historically significant personal manuscripts, photographs, audiovisual recordings, and organizational records. These collections include unpublished material such as letters, diaries, and scrapbooks documenting the lives of both average people and community leaders. They also include the records of many community organizations, businesses, and political campaigns. This guide is intended to serve as a preliminary research tool that provides a brief description of holdings with basic information on size, inclusive dates, types of records, and broad subject areas. Through the Hall of Fame, residents of Chicago and the world are made aware of the contributions of Chicago’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) communities and the communities’ efforts to eradicate bias and discrimination. With the support of the City of Chicago Commission on Human Relations, the Advisory Council on Gay and Lesbian Issues (now the Advisory Council on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Issues) established the Chicago Gay and Lesbian Hall of Fame in June 1991. The inaugural induction ceremony took place during Pride Week at City Hall, hosted by Mayor Richard M. Daley. This was the first event of its kind in the country. The Hall of Fame recognizes the volunteer and professional achievements of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals, their organizations and their friends, as well as their contributions to the LGBT communities and to the city of Chicago. -

Ally Advocacy, Identity Reconfiguration, and Political Change
ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: “THE FIGHT IS YOURS”: ALLY ADVOCACY, IDENTITY RECONFIGURATION, AND POLITICAL CHANGE William Howell, Doctor of Philosophy, 2020 Dissertation directed by: Dr. Trevor Parry-Giles, Department of Communication Since at least 1990, scholars and activists have used the term “ally” to describe and theorize a distinct sociopolitical role: someone from a majority identity group working to end that group’s oppression of another identity group. While the term is recent, “allies” are present throughout America’s constant struggle to actualize equality and justice. The identity-rooted ideologies that empowered allies disempowered the groups for and with whom they sought justice and equality. But those empowering identities were pieces, more or less salient, of complex intersectional people. Given the shared nature of identity, this process also necessarily pitted allies against those with whom they shared an identity. In this project, I ask two questions about past ally advocacy—questions that are often asked about contemporary ally advocacy. First, in moments of major civil rights reform, how did allies engage their own intersecting identities—especially those ideologically-charged identities with accrued power from generations of marginalizing and oppressing? Second, how did allies engage other identities that were not theirs—especially identities on whose oppression their privilege was built? In asking these two questions—about self-identity and others’ identity—I assemble numerous rhetorical fragments into “ally advocacy.” This bricolage is in recognition of rhetoric’s fragmentary nature, and in response to Michael Calvin McGee’s call to assemble texts for criticism. I intend to demonstrate that ally advocacy is such a text, manifesting (among other contexts) around the women’s suffrage amendment, the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and the marriage equality movement. -

711 DEERFIELD BUILDING SHOPS AT DEERFIELD SQUARE PROJECT DESCRIPTION The Shops at Deerfield Square retail center has always served as the heart of downtown Deerfield, providing a focal point for community events, shopping, and fine dining. With the addition of an exciting new building at 711 Deerfield Rd., we believe the dynamic urban experience of the inner retail center will now better translate to Deerfield Rd. and the surrounding community. Sited adjacent to our public plaza at the corner of Deerfield and Waukegan Roads, the new building will break down the solid monolithic massing of the old building into a much more proportional series of architectural elements. Emphasizing these elements through the use of varying premium materials such as brick, metal panels, and glazed block, the new building will also incorporate substantially greater amounts of glass than the previous building increasing streetscape activity along Deerfield Rd. Additionally, through the use of retractable glazing walls, patrons will also benefit from a more enhanced sense of indoor/outdoor connectivity. This will also provide exciting new opportunities for outdoor dining and activities along the public plaza. The new building will have the ability to be subdivided into as many as 4 individual retail spaces. The overall design will be thematically consistent with the rest of the Shops of Deerfield Square center through the use of complementary masonry materials, color palette, architectural detailing, thoughtful lighting, and carefully considered signage. To encourage more bicycle traffic, new bike racks will also be located adjacent to the new building. Mechanical equipment will be located on the rooftop and will be screened by the raised parapet walls of the building. -
