Eskdale Festival The Concert Band and Brass Band attended the ‘Band’ day at Whitby in March for the second year running. Both Bands performed extremely well and there were solo’s from Milo Ryan on the Alto Saxophone, and Emma Ribchester on the Tenor Horn. The Bands played alongside Whitby Music Centre Bands in the afternoon, and the organisers are hoping to encourage more groups to participate next year. The students thoroughly enjoyed their day out, despite a rather early start.

10 Music Hub Newsletter • Issue 12 Summer 2016 Skipton Music Centre Guitarist’s Gather in Skipton for Joint Concert In March, guitarists from Skipton and Harrogate Music Centres gathered at Christ Church, Skipton to perform an exciting selection of music in an afternoon concert. Featuring Skipton Music Centre’s Junior Guitar Ensemble and Senior Guitar Ensemble and Harrogate Music Centre’s Guitar Ensemble and Ukulele Group, the concert included a wide programme of classical, blues and folk music. The concert finished with the traditional piece ‘Sloop John B’ and Haydn’s ‘St. Anthony Chorale’ giving all the guitarists the opportunity to perform in one joint group. James Lacey, Ensemble Director said “It was a great opportunity for guitarists from both music centres to get together and perform. We look forward to performing in Christ Church again in spring 2017”.

New Home for Skipton Music Centre At the start of the spring term, Skipton Music Centre moved to its new home at Ermysted’s Grammar School in Skipton. The centre now runs twelve different ensembles and welcomes new members of all standards (including beginners) and ages (including adults). 11 Music Hub Newsletter • Issue 12 Summer 2016 Whitby Music Centre Wider Opportunities day IN March 200 children from nine separate Primary schools converged on Eskdale Middle School in Whitby for an afternoon of music making. All the children were participants in the Wider Opportunities scheme and have been learning how to play a range of instruments in a class situation. The 200 strong band made a fantastic sound and the children played with a sense of real purpose. Four pieces were learned and rehearsed up to a high standard. Parents were then treated to a short concert at the end of the day. Eskdale Festival Every year Whitby Music Centre entered all of its ensembles to compete in the Eskdale Festival. High marks were achieved by all the groups, with some winning their class. The Festival invited the 2016 Stormbound Folk Musical outstanding entries of the Festival week to come Whitby Music Centre’s advanced wind group – back and play in their Gala Concert at the end of the Sirocco took part in the full scale folk musical Festival. Three of the Centre’s groups were asked to – Stormbound. The musical depicts the story of do this and were very happy to oblige the Rohilla sea disaster off Robin Hood’s Bay in 1914. Sirocco provided the overture and also key musical episodes throughout the musical. The group performed very professionally and played to their usual very high standard.

Eskdale Festival Gala Concert A very successful Eskdale Festival was capped by its “End of Festival Gala Concert. Three of Whitby Music Centre’s ensembles were asked to play at this and their performances did our Centre proud.
