One of the reasons for that is the tremendous amount of confidence owner George Teague Jr. has shown in the gelding, saying he is as good as any horse he has ever trained. Teague has trained two Pacers of the Year in Rainbow Blue and Total Truth. Teague is listed as the owner only as his assistant Clyde Francis is down as the trainer. Teague has said he has done so because Francis deserves to get some attention after so many years playing a vital role in the stable’s success. “It’s hard to put a label when it comes to how good they are,” Teague said. “This horse shows so many qualities. Speed is just one factor of a good horses and he has that. The other part that is important to me is that he has a great set of lungs. He just doesn’t get tired. He’s also a very intelligent horse, so he can rate, go first over or go on the front end. He’s got all the tools to get to the next stage where we’re racing in important races in May, June, July, August. I think he will be a factor in those races.” Wiggle It Jiggleit raced just once as a 2-year-old, winning a non-winners of two pari-mutuel race at Pocono Downs. Teague said because he did not have him staked to any Grand Circuit races he figured the best plan of attack was to take a step back and point for the 3-year-old year. To try and make some sort of splash in the betting landscape, pick 4 takeout was cut drastically and Balmoral promoted it with verve. It took a great deal of time and effort (the naysayers were out early, asking for the rates to be reversed), but this small pool pick 4 grew from a modest $8,000 per night to over $20,000. Balmoral's handle in the WPS pools for the pick 4 races grew as well. Pick a pool, any pool, and do what needs to be done to brand the bet. The purse to handle ratio will improve. Seed a Pool Brandon Valvo of Harnessracingamerica.com asked an interesting question on twitter a couple of weeks ago: "What's a better use of $1,000, adding it to the purse, or to a pool?" As a horse owner who commonly comes fifth I could use the extra $50, but I'm not sure that's optimal, when we look at gambling economics. This past August at Mohawk Racetrack, the Canadian Pacing Derby, as well as a few other stakes were carded, and over one million dollars in purses handed out. It was sure to be a nice handle night, because on the same evening the previous year, more than $2 million was bet. What happened last August was extra-remarkable, however, because more than $5 million was bet. Over $2 million alone was bet on mandatory payout for the Super High Five carryover (more than the entire card a year earlier). Many horsemen groups and tracks have trouble understanding low takeout. Many say takeout does not matter, but that's false. A carryover is by definition low HarnessRacingUpdate.com • 3/7/15 PAGE 5 of 9
