At age 11, Norman's parents gave him his first guitar, a finely crafted instrument from the Sears Catalogue. This set the stage for a lifelong dream. With idols including The Beatles, Hank Williams and Elvis, it wasn't long before Norman switched to electric guitar and performed with garage bands during his high school years. “Drawing from his own experiences, Norman creates songs and stories & props that delight the ears and eyes. He weaves imaginative word play with great melodies all too great effect. ” When Norman was 20, he left his home in Vancouver, Canada to explore Australia and New Zealand, and made his living as a street performer and songster. Norman first developed an interest in puppetry and physical comedy through his association with a traveling theatre troupe in New South Wales, Australia. Still hooked on music but enthralled with the art of puppetry and comedy, Norman chose the only feasible solution - to combine all three. Magazine Campaign We have reached the deadline for our magazine campaign. It was again a success; we have raised a substantial amount for our new water fountain. We are crossing our fingers we have raised enough to pur- chase new furniture for the entrance way. Thank you to all who supported us by purchasing magazines this year. He recorded two versions of Bach’s great composition—once in 1955 and again in 1981. It is a testament to Gould’s genius that he could record the same piece of music twice—so differently, yet each version brilliant in its own way. Glenn Gould— A State Of Wonder brings together both of Gould’s legendary performances of The Goldberg Variations for the first time in a deluxe, digitally remastered, 3-CD set. Sony Classical celebrates the 70th anniversary of Glenn Gould's birth with a collection of limited edition CDs. • An Investigation Into Children's Opera
AN INVESTIGATION INTO CHILDREN’S OPERA: A HISTORICAL SURVEY, ITS NATURE AND CONDITION IN CANADA TODAY AFARIN MANSOURI TEHRANI A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF PHD IN MUSIC GRADUATE PROGRAM IN MUSIC YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO NOVEMBER 2019 © AFARIN MANSOURI TEHRANI, 2019 Abstract Opera is a unique collaboration of music, dance, literature, theatre, and visual arts which some observers believe is the greatest of all art forms. From its origins in Florence, opera has existed as a significant source of cultural and national identity through sharing stories from different nations, addressing social and political issues, and creating new meanings and trends through the combination of old and new. In parallel with contemporary globalization developments, opera continually attempts to reinvent itself by becoming ever more communal, more accessible, and cross-culturally adaptable. This dissertation considers the involvement of children in the merging of music and drama as part of the unbroken tradition dating back to ancient Greece. Opera is capable of entertaining and educating younger generations either as active participants or audience members. It offers the potential to reveal new ideas, illustrate aspects of diverse cultures, support intellectual progress, and facilitate educational and artistic creativity. As a composer and a teaching artist with many years of experience working with children and youth, my teaching philosophy encompasses informing the younger generation about their own cultural values in addition to those of others. This approach supports educational development and encourages the development of strong creative voices in a more diverse society of the future.
