  • Small Footprint, Big Challenges-Design and Construction of the Allen Park Sanitary District 1 Storage Tunnel
Small Footprint, Big Challenges-Design and Construction of the Allen Park Sanitary District 1 Storage Tunnel Brian E. Gombos Wade Trim Associates, Detroit, MI, USA Gregory A. Stanley Wade Trim Associates, Detroit, MI, USA ABSTRACT: Integrating new infrastructure into urban areas requires precision in design and construction. The new infrastructure has to virtually thread the needle of existing infrastructure and buried utilities while meeting the requirements of regulatory agencies, property owners, and other entities. These factors make it particularly challenging for large-diameter pipelines like the Allen Park Sanitary Sewer Overflow (SSO) Tunnel that had to cross an interstate highway, several railroads, gas and oil pipelines, a transmission water main, two creeks with limited cover, as well as a residential area and college campus. Rigid mining shafts, detailed specifications for tunneling materials, a fully breasted TBM, and various trenchless technologies were successfully utilized in conjunction with robust geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring, to mitigate settlement risks and overcome historical challenges with tunneling in the area. INTRODUCTION The Allen Park Sanitary Sewer Overflow (SSO) Tunnel and Relief Sewer project, located in the City of Allen Park, MI, is a long-term corrective action designed to bring Sanitary District One’s sanitary system into compliance with their 2005 Consent Order and their service contract with the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department (DWSD). The $20 million project is intended to reduce Allen Park’s wet weather discharges to DWSD, reduce bypass pumping to the Ecorse Creek, and limit the future risk of basement flooding, by providing storage during wet weather events, and eliminating hydraulic bottlenecks in the sanitary sewer system.

  • Allen Park Guardian March 1, 2019 New Book About
Allen Park Guardian March 1, 2019 New book about Allen Park’s Giant Tire nominated for Michigan’s Notable Book List Every year, the Library of Michigan selects up to twenty of the most notable books, either written by a Michigan resident or about Michigan or the Great Lakes. Published January 31, ‘The Giant Tire’ is already being considered for this year’s list, which will be announced in January, 2020. This book represents a little over a year’s worth of research, by local historian and author, Steven J. Frey. He got the idea to write about the Giant Tire after reading posts about it on local interest Facebook group pages. “So many people posted comments about the tire that were just repeats of rumors and hearsay”, Frey said. “It was also amazing to read that most of the comments were from people that had no idea that it used to be a Ferris wheel.” That is when he decided that he wanted to learn all there is to learn about the landmark that has been a fixture in the City of Allen Park and metro Detroit since 1966. Frey’s biggest challenge was the fact that none of the company records of the structure have survived. Originally, U.S. Rubber sponsored the tire-shaped Ferris wheel for the 1964-65 New York World’s Fair. At the conclusion of the fair, the Ferris wheel portion was sold off to an amusement park, and the outer, tire-shaped sections came to Allen Park to be reassembled as a roadside billboard.

  • Uniroyal Giant Tire Urban Legends and Debunked Internet Claims by Historian Steven J
Uniroyal Giant Tire Urban Legends and Debunked Internet Claims By historian Steven J. Frey “It used to be a Ferris wheel” True. The US Royal Giant Tire Ferris wheel was built by the US Rubber company for the 1964- 65 New York World’s Fair. The name of the company was later changed to Uniroyal. “It was ridden by actor Telly Savalis and the Shah of Iran” False. The Shah’s visit to the World’s Fair, June 14, 1964, was well documented by the media at that time. A visit to the U.S. Royal Giant Tire was not on the itinerary. There is no evidence that Mr. Savalas he ever visited the fair at all, although his mother represented Greek women at the 1939 World’s Fair. “Jacqueline, Caroline and John Kennedy, Jr. rode the Ferris wheel” Partially True. It was widely reported that Mrs. Kennedy visited the fair, April 30, 1964, with her sister, nieces and newphews, and Caroline. Several newspapers mentioned the Ferris wheel ride, but also reported that John, Jr. was ill, and stayed home that day. “It was shipped to Allen Park (Detroit), Michigan by train” False. This rumor was started by a single person being interviewed for a newspaper article at the conclusion of the Giant Tire’s 1994 remodel, citing its proximity to a rail line as ‘evidence’. According to the Townsend Sign Company (contracted to move and reassemble the Giant Tire), it was shipped via 21 trucks. This was also confirmed by former U.S. Rubber employee, Mary Dean, who was responsible for arranging the truck shipments.
