Wendy Rowe, PhD, Committee Chair ROYAL ROADS UNIVERSITY November 2010 © Ben Weinlick, 2010 Humour and Serious Play ii ABSTRACT Over the years of providing disability services in Alberta, there has been an intention to design support models that are innovative and relevant to an individuals’ needs, and aspirations. This project researched what might set the stage for innovations in disability services to emerge. In particular, this research project explored the use of serious play in the design processes of a pilot project, Recruiting Allies Within Kommunity (RAWK). From the data, a number of unexpected conclusions emerged. The first is that serious play in the design process fosters strong trust among the members and on that basis more creative ideas emerged. Second, there was a need to balance serious play and critical thinking to select relevant ideas. Third, from comparing and contrasting the data with relevant literature on enhancing creativity, an organizational culture can be strengthened to support creative thinking abilities in order to produce quality outcomes for service recipients. Humour and Serious Play iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Many people have supported and inspired me over the last year of this research project. First, my teacher and mentor Lama Ole Nydahl, with his robust sense of humour and playfulness that benefit others in all kinds of serious situations, inspired me to conduct this research project. He showed me that humour and playfulness are not a waste of time and that, if they are engaged in skilfully, they can be useful in supporting others to find their inner strengths and see fresh possibilities. He often jokes, “If everything is the free play of mind, we might as well enjoy it.” I also want to thank Debbie Reid, my project sponsor, an excellent mentor in Community Disability Services. To me, Debbie is a great heroine of the mind who gracefully balances a hilarious sense of humour with deep wisdom. As well, my amazing colleagues and friends at SKILLS Society and the participants in the project ‘blew my mind’ and made me laugh often: Gertrude, Murray, Lois, Gretel, Trudy, and Wendell whom Murray called the “French Jesus” because of his “amazing” moustache and coiffed hair (All names here are pseudonyms). I want to thank Jim Force, PhD, my research project advisor. I couldn’t have asked for a better advisor. In the writing process Jim was a living example of how to foster creativity by provoking my divergent and convergent thinking processes. I can tell that Jim lives serious play. Finally, my wildly inspiring family, Eve, Lilly, and Maelen, who put up with a deadbeat dad in the basement who was engaging a computer and enjoying a bottle of good scotch to finish his writing. I appreciated the playful breaks when they began to bash on the drums in my studio to get my attention. I hope you guys will always have the support to retain your curiosity, wild playfulness, and creativity for the benefit of all.     Creativity in Nietzsche and Heidegger: The Relation of Art and Artist Justin Hauver Philosophy and German Mentor: Hans Sluga, Philosophy August 22, 2011 I began my research this summer with a simple goal in mind: I wanted to out- line the ways in which the thoughts of Friedrich Nietzsche and Martin Heidegger complement one another with respect to art. I had taken a few courses on each philosopher beforehand, so I had some inclination as to how their works might be brought into agreement. However, I almost immediately ran into difficulty. It turns out that Heidegger, who lived and thought two or three generations after Nietzsche, had actually lectured on the topic of Nietzsche's philosophy of art and had placed Nietzsche firmly in a long tradition characterized by its mis- understanding of art and of the work of art. This means that Heidegger himself did not agree with me|he did not see his thoughts on art as complementary with Nietzsche's. Rather, Heidegger saw his work as an improvement over the misguided aesthetic tradition. Fortunately for me, Heidegger was simply mistaken. At least, that's my thesis. Heidegger did not see his affinity with Nietzsche because he was misled by his own misinterpretation. Nevertheless, his thoughts on art balance nicely with those of Nietzsche. To support this claim, I will make three moves today. First, I will set up Heidegger's critique, which is really a challenge to the entire tradition that begins with Plato and runs its course up to Nietzsche. Next, I will turn to Heidegger's views on art to see how he overcomes the tradition and answers his own criticism of aesthetics.

In part 2, I look at how Nietzsche uses humour and laughter as a critical tool in his polemic against traditional morality. I argue that one important way in which Nietzsche uses humour is as a vehicle for enhancing the effectiveness of his ad hominem arguments. In part 3, I show how Nietzsche exploits humour's social dimension in order to find and culti- vate what he sees as the right kinds of readers for his works. Nietzsche is a unique figure in Western philosophy for the importance he places on laughter and humour. He is also unique for his affectively charged style, a style frequently designed to make the reader laugh. In this article, I am pri- marily concerned with the way in which Nietzsche uses humour, but I will inevitably discuss some of his more theo- retical remarks on the topic, as these cannot be neatly separated.

It is a difficult search. Young children make enormous efforts to put together often-disconnected fragments of experience to make sense of things. They persevere with their search stub- bornly, tirelessly, making mistakes, and often on their own. But while engaged in this search, children ask us to share the search with them.     c e p s Journal | Vol.1 | No1 | Year 2011 169 Postgraduate Students’ Perception of Creativity in the Research Process Mojca Juriševič1 • The purpose of the research was, with the aid of a short ques- tionnaire, to determine how postgraduate students (N = 32) perceive the opportunities for creative research in general, and how they perceive creativity in the preparation of their own re- search work in particular. Descriptive analysis shows that stu- dents (1) perceive a positive study-research climate that encour- ages creative processes (independence, motivation, intellectual challenges), (2) judge that researchers have numerous opportu- nities for creative work in the various phases of research and (3) evaluate themselves as highly creative individuals in everyday life. Students perceive themselves as being at their most creative in the definition of the research problem, which they mainly identify with the use of personal strategies (work experience) and take various lengths of time to form, typically up to one year. The most difficult problem in this regard is represented by giving meaning to the problem (breadth, depth, specificity, ap- plication).     Pamukkale Üniversitesi Sosyal Bilimler Enstitüsü Dergisi Sayı 25/1,2016, Sayfa 74-86 HUMOUR AND FATE IN TOM STOPPARD’S PLAY ROSENCRANTZ AND GUILDENSTERN ARE DEAD Ayça ÜLKER ERKAN∗ Abstract The purpose of this study is to discuss physical humour arising from the characters’ quest for identity and to depict how the themes of death/ chance/ fate/ reality/ illusion function in the existentialist world of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. Humour plays a significant role in the analysis of this tragicomedy. The theatre of the Absurd expresses the senselessness of the human condition, abandons the use of rational devices, reflects man’s tragic sense of loss, and registers the ultimate realities of the human condition, such as the problems of life and death. Thus the audience is confronted with a picture of disintegration. This dissolved reality is discharged through ‘liberating’ laughter which depicts the absurdity of the universe. Stoppard uses verbal wit, humour and farce to turn the most serious subjects into comedy. Humour is created by Guildenstern’s little monologues that touch on the profound but founder on the absurd. The play has varieties of irony, innuendo, confusion, odd events, and straight-up jokes. Stoppard’s use of the ‘play in play’ technique reveals the ultimate fate of the tragicomic characters Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. They confront the mirror image of their future deaths in the metadramatic spectacle performed by the Players. As such, the term “Stoppardian” springs out of his use of style: wit and comedy while addressing philosophical concepts and ideas.
