THE BAPTIST CHURCHES OF QUÉBEC The first Baptist church in Lower Canada (Québec) opened in Stanstead in 1794, followed by Abbott's Corners in 1796 or 1798 - Frelighsburg opened in 1799, all were ministered by Baptist missionaries from Vermont and Northern New York - In 1831 the Baptists were present in Montréal - The Grande Ligne French Baptist Mission was opened in 1835 - The Canada Baptist Missionary Society was organized in 1837, with headquarters in Montréal - In 1845, the Baptists were present in Québec City - In 1888 the Baptist Convention of Ontario and Québec was formed.

THE BAPTISTS IN LOWER CANADA IN 1861 In 1861 the total number of Protestants in Lower Canada (Québec) stood at 15.1% of the total population - The Anglicans were the largest at 38.8% of the total Protestant population, the Presbyterians at 26%, the Methodists at 18.3%, the Baptists at 4.6% (source: Michael Gauvreau, The Canadian Protestant Experience 1760-1990, edited by George A. Abbott’s Corners – Abbott's Corners' Baptist Church – Missisquoi - A village first settled about 1795 or most likely earlier by American settlers and located about 2 km east of Frelighsburg. All that exist today as a memorial to the past is an old Baptist church building and two Protestant cemeteries. Abercorn – Abercorn's Union Church – Brome - A village on the Vermont border first settled in 1810 and located within Sutton township near East Pinnacle.
