Tonight, as we recognize outstanding achievements and bold visions, we also take pause to remember the impact of our most powerful tool: our voice. The past year in news, entertainment and online media reminds us that our stories are what continue to drive equality forward. When four states brought marriage equality to the election FROM THE PRESIDENT ballot last year, GLAAD stepped forward to help couples across the nation to share messages of love and commitment that lit the way for landmark victories in Maine, Maryland, Minnesota and Washington. Now, the U.S. Supreme Court will weigh in on whether same- sex couples should receive the same federal protections as straight married couples, and GLAAD is leading the media narrative and reshaping the way Americans view marriage equality. Because of GLAAD’s work, the Boy Scouts of America is closer than ever before to ending its discriminatory ban on gay scouts and leaders. GLAAD is empowering people like Jennifer Tyrrell – an Ohio mom who was ousted as leader of her son’s Cub Scouts pack – to share their stories with top-tier national news outlets, helping Americans understand the harm this ban inflicts on gay youth and families.

    1 5/2/18 V1 47th Annual NORTHERN CALIFORNIA AREA EMMY® AWARD NOMINATIONS ANNOUNCED The 47th Annual Northern California Area EMMY® Award Nominations were announced Wednesday, May 2rd on the chapter’s website. The EMMY® award is presented for outstanding achievement in television by The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS). San Francisco/ Northern California is one of the nineteen chapters awarding regional Emmy® statuettes. Northern California is composed of media companies and individuals from Visalia to the Oregon border and includes Hawaii and Reno, Nevada. Entries aired during the 2017 calendar year. This year 784 English entries were received in 62 categories and 218 entries in the Spanish contest in 42 categories. English and Spanish language entries were judged and scored separately. A minimum of seven peer judges from other NATAS chapters scored each entry on a scale from 1 to 10 on Content, Creativity and Execution. (Craft categories were judged on Creativity and Execution only). The total score was divided by the number of judges. The mean score was sorted from highest to lowest in each category. The Chapter Awards Committee looked at blind scores (not knowing the category) and decided on the cut off number for nominations and recipients. In the English contest KNTV NBC Bay Area received 27 nominations. The Spanish contest KUVS Univision 19 received 28. Individual honors went to Luis Godínez, Assistant News Director, KDTV Univision 14, San Francisco received ten nominations. KDTV’s Joseph Perry, Photographer/Editor and KUVS Univisioin 19 Sandra Cervantes, Anchor/Reporter and Eduardo Mancera Mancera each received nine.

This year 784 English entries were received in 62 categories and 218 entries in the Spanish contest in 42 categories. English and Spanish language entries were judged and scored separately. A minimum of seven peer judges from other NATAS chapters scored each entry on a scale from 1 to 10 on Content, Creativity and Execution. (Craft categories were judged on Creativity and Execution only). The total score was divided by the number of judges. The mean score was sorted from highest to lowest in each category. The Chapter Awards Committee looked at blind scores (not knowing the category) and decided on the cut off number for nominations and recipients. In the English contest KNTV NBC Bay Area received 27 nominations. The Spanish contest KUVS Univision 19 received 30. Individual honors went to Luis Godínez, Assistant News Director, KDTV Univision 14, San Francisco with ten nominations. Nine nominations each to: Flavio Lacayo, Luz Peña, Reporters, Eduardo Mancera, Joseph Perry, Photographer/Editors, from KDTV; Sandra Cervantes, Jairo Díaz-Pedraza, Anchor/Reporters, from KUVS Univisioin 19, Sacramento.

With more than 34 percent of precincts reporting, Measure A has received overwhelming approval, amassing 10,364 votes, which translates to 77 percent of the vote, according to the San Bernardino County Elections Office. Measure A needed a two-thirds majority to pass. Doug Qualls — former Apple Valley Fire Protection District Chief and Measure A’s principal officer — told the Daily Press things are “going well” in the district as a result of the voting. “The threshold of reaching two-thirds of the voters is an extraordinary effort,” Qualls said. “To get two-thirds of the people to agree on something, and we far exceeded that expectation, that’s by commitment to the community.” Qualls called Tuesday’s outcome the result of a reality wherein fire stations need to be reopened; currently just three of the district’s seven fire stations are opened, and emergency-response times are below the national averages. “In 1997,” Qualls said, “the fire district promised the voters that they would deliver the best service they can deliver with the resources provided.
