Analyses of male genitalia, other aspects of adult, larval and pupal morphology, and DNA COI barcode sequences suggest that Potamanaxas unifasciata (C. Felder & R. Felder, 1867) does not belong to Potamanaxas Lindsey, 1925 and not even to the Erynnini tribe, but instead is more closely related to Milanion Godman & Salvin, 1895 and Atarnes Godman & Salvin, 1897, (Achlyodini). Unexpected and striking similarities are revealed in the male genitalia of P. unifasciata and Atarnes hierax (Hopffer, 1874). Their genitalia are so similar and distinct from the others that one might casually mistake them for the same species. Capturing this uniqueness, a new genus Eburuncus is erected to include: E. unifasciata, new combination (type species) and E. hierax, new combination. In insects, a robust cuticle often impedes examination. Three-dimensional visualization of anatomical details based on light microscopy photo graphs is particularly challenging, because the necessary creation of a series of “perfect” slices often proves to be impossible in the case of hard-shelled specimens. Synchrotron-based X-ray imaging provides a pool of techniques well-suited for morphological studies. As it allows examin- ing millimeter-sized non-translucent objects, it is particularly valuable for the multidimensional visualization of insects and became increasingly popular among entomologists. A synchrotron is a cyclic particle accelerator. In high vacuum electrons are accelerated up to nearly light speed, injected into a storage ring and deviated by bending magnets. When the electron beam changes its direction due to magnetic infl uence, electromagnetic radiation is transmitted tangentially, which is used in attached experimental stations (“beamlines”). Synchrotron radiation has a broad spectrum ranging from microwaves to hard X-rays, the latter being used for most synchrotron imaging techniques. The high intensity of these X-rays facilitates high special and temporal resolutions. An important method is synchrotron X-ray microtomography (SR-μCT). Here, a series of 2D X-ray projections of a rotating sample is used to calculate a 3D volume. -

Hebert3 1 Department of Biology, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States of America, 2 Department of Entomology, National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C., United States of America, 3 Department of Integrative Biology, Biodiversity Institute of Ontario, University of Guelph, Guelph, Canada Abstract Background: An intense, 30-year, ongoing biodiversity inventory of Lepidoptera, together with their food plants and parasitoids, is centered on the rearing of wild-caught caterpillars in the 120,000 terrestrial hectares of dry, rain, and cloud forest of Area de Conservacion Guanacaste (ACG) in northwestern Costa Rica. Since 2003, DNA barcoding of all species has aided their identification and discovery. We summarize the process and results for a large set of the species of two speciose subfamilies of ACG skipper butterflies (Hesperiidae) and emphasize the effectiveness of barcoding these species (which are often difficult and time-consuming to identify). Methodology/Principal Findings: Adults are DNA barcoded by the Biodiversity Institute of Ontario, Guelph, Canada; and they are identified by correlating the resulting COI barcode information with more traditional information such as food plant, facies, genitalia, microlocation within ACG, caterpillar traits, etc. This process has found about 303 morphologically defined species of eudamine and pyrgine Hesperiidae breeding in ACG (about 25% of the ACG butterfly fauna) and another 44 units indicated by distinct barcodes (n = 9,094), which may be additional species and therefore may represent as much as a 13% increase. -

Life history notes on the White-banded Line-blue, Nacaduba kurava (Moore, 1858) Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae – Todd Burrows My first experience with Nacaduba kurava came at Tweed Heads NSW (28/1/10) when I noticed a female laying eggs on the new growth of the River Mangrove (Aegiceras corniculatum). She flew before I could take a photo but on closer inspection I found a small larva feeding on the upper surface of the leaf. Within a few days (31/1/10) I observed this species on South Stradbroke Island QLD. I found a male within the vicinity of Tuckeroo (Cupaniopsis anacardiodes) a recorded host for this species (Braby, 2005) but was unable to locate any larvae. While near the western shoreline of SSI a few weeks later on (20/2/10) during the early afternoon, I noticed a small number of females fluttering about and landing on River Mangrove. I managed to get some nice photos of a female laying eggs on leaf buds. Some time later (10/3/10) I visited the same plants to have a search for larvae and was pleased to find two of them close to maturity and being attended by large black ants (I always find this most interesting). The larvae were feeding on the new growth and the pictured individual was chewing on the stalk of a fresh leaf. I collected one of the larvae in the hope of photographing the pupa but it had a mysterious escape before it pupated. I returned again to the same mangroves (12/3/10) to try and find another larva but instead found a pupa attached to the upper Early instar larva surface of a mangrove leaf. -

In view of the importance of sampling these areas, the present study conducted the first butterfly inventory of a coastal area in the state of Paraná. Samples were taken in the Floresta Estadual do Palmito, from February 2014 through January 2015, using insect nets and traps for fruit-feeding butterfly species. A total of 200 species were recorded, in the families Hesperiidae (77), Nymphalidae (73), Riodinidae (20), Lycaenidae (19), Pieridae (7) and Papilionidae (4). Particularly notable records included the rare and vulnerable Pseudotinea hemis (Schaus, 1927), representing the lowest elevation record for this species, and Temenis huebneri korallion Fruhstorfer, 1912, a new record for Paraná. These results reinforce the need to direct sampling efforts to poorly inventoried areas, to increase knowledge of the distribution and occurrence patterns of butterflies in Brazil. (Lepidoptera: Hesperiidae: Coeliadinae) from Lanyu, Taiwan, with observations of its unusual immature biology. Zoological Studies 47(2): 222-231. A fairly large skipper, Hasora mixta, was discovered on Lanyu (Orchid I.), off the southeastern coast of Taiwan. Samples of this species from Lanyu were compared with those from other regions, revealing that the wing pattern and male genitalia consistently differ from those of other subspecies, and this is herein described as H. mixta limata, ssp. nov. This skipper is crepuscular or on the wing under cloudy conditions. An investigation of the immature biology of H. mixta limata revealed that it demonstrates an oviposition behavior unusual in skippers, in that it conceals its ova between leaflets of its larval host with spumaline. The papillae anales of the female genitalia are modified so that they can insert ova into tightly attached leaflets of young buds. Do butterflies use “hearing aids”? Investigating the structure and function of inflated wing veins in Nymphalidae by Penghui (Carrie) Sun A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Biology in Biology Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2018 Penghui (Carrie) Sun Abstract Many butterfly species within the subfamily Satyrinae (Nymphalidae) have been informally reported to possess a conspicuous “inflated” or “swollen” subcostal vein on each forewing. However, the function and taxonomic diversity of these structures is unknown. This thesis comprises both experimental and comparative approaches to test hypotheses on the function and evolution of these inflated veins. A laser vibrometry study showed that ears in the common wood nymph, Cercyonis pegala, are tuned to sounds between 1-5 kHz and the inflated subcostal vein enhances sensitivity to these sounds. A comparative study showed that all species with inflated veins possess ears, but not all species with ears possess inflated veins. Further, inflated veins were better developed in smaller butterflies.
