I was invited to participate at a speaking event by the Student Events Center Asian American Culture Committee at the University of – Austin several weeks ago. The title of the event was called InspirAsian: Redfine Your Generation. A cupcake store owner, associate municipal judge, architect, social worker and author also participated in the program along with me. Strangely absent were doctors, engineers, technology geeks and lawyers. The “Main Event” of the program occurred later in the evening and was particularly well attended by a group of more than 500 enthusiastic Asian American students; apparently, the three guys who comprise Wong Fu Productions are very well known and very popular. In fact, they have more than one million Youtube subscribers with more than 200,000 views per day.

While we have not covered this program in the magazine, it did have an impact upon me that I wanted to share with you. The InspirAsian program was decidely an anti-stereotype program. It resonated with me because, in essence, Yellow Magazine is also a promoter of Asian-American anti-stereotyping. It is remarkable how many successful actors, models, writers, designers and others have acknowledged parental resistance as they endeavored to pursue their passion and dreams and NOT enter one of the traditionally accepted professions such as medicine and engineering.

As we evolve as Asian-Americans, each new generation embraces the possibilities of their potential that will take them in every direction, many of which are not the ones that would have been acceptable to their grandparents and, possibly, their parents. Change is inevitable and it is welcome. It does not overwhelm and totally obliterate one’s culture – it enriches it on so many levels.

Photo by Collin Kelly Stereotypes are interesting to consider. Just because there is a stereotype certainly does not mean that it does not have a basis in undeniable truths. It is not by coincidence that so much humor surrounds the more prevalent stereotypes. In fact, one of the videos produced and shown by the guys from Wong Fu was their production Kung Fooled which I encourage everyone to watch on Youtube. It will knock you out with laughter. While it was produced by Asian-Americans and is about Asian-Americans, it is meant to be enjoyed by EVERYONE. Happy Asian American month!

V. Hoang The color yellow has played a recurrent symbolic role throughout the history of Asian culture. It symbolizes the earth that sustains all life, yet has been embraced by Buddhist monks as an expression of unchallenged power. Such is the role of yellow: always revered but in different ways under different circumstances. The mission of Yellow Magazine is to introduce our readers to the artistic , fashion, lifestyle and entertainment contributions made by Asian Americans. It is our hope that the depth and breadth of the topics and events we cover do justice to the pride that the color yellow has represented throughout the millennia. As the editor in chief of Yellow Magazine, my last name is Hoang, which also means yellow. Just as I am proud of my name, I am proud of my heritage, and proud of Yellow Magazine.

May 2012 FASHION A Stylish Future Beyond Bandages BCBG MaxAzria by V. HOANG

I had the pleasure of meeting Lubov Azria, creative director of BCBGMAXAZRIA

Group, at a luncheon at the beautiful home of Lucinda Loya. She shared with me

that her love for designing started at a young age when she watched seamstresses

making dance costumes and that respect plays a big part of being successful when

working with your husband.

What inspired you to become a fashion designer? Actually, I did not want to be a fashion designer. I started out in dance and realized I spent more time in the costume area with the seamstresses. I thought it was amazing that you can actually make clothes. As I am very good in art, I wanted to be an art historian and teach. But my parents pushed me into fashion because that was the second thing I liked. And they were right. Lucinda Loya, Lubov Azria Are there similarities between dance and fashion design? MUSIC Symphonic Music To Our Ears Frank Huang by V. HOANG

Frank Xin Huang is a Chinese-born American violinist and teacher who lives in Houston.

He has won several international music competitions, most notably the 2003 Naumburg

Competition. Huang has participated in multiple concerts as a soloist and his debut

recording has been critically acclaimed. In 2009, he was appointed the first violinist

of the Ying Quartet and a professor of violin and chamber music at the Eastman School

of Music. Huang left the Eastman School and the Ying Quartet in early 2010 to assume

his new position as concertmaster of the Houston Symphony. In this interview, Huang

tells us how he felt returning home to Houston, his love of sports and food, and

catching up on a whole lot of sleep. We have all heard about child prodigies who were strongly pushed by their parents to learn an instrument and to practice endlessly. Were you similarly pushed or did your interest originate differently? Do you play other instruments? How does it feel to be back in Houston? Wow! That’s a complicated question. I started playing piano at age four It’s great to be back home! I left Houston when I was 15 and the city and violin at seven. I loved the piano and hated the violin, simply because has certainly changed a lot since then. There has been so much cultural and piano was initially easier to play. My true passion at that age was basketball, artistic growth, as well as a constantly expanding array of incredible restaurants. and I practiced my 3-point shot way more than either of those instruments! My parents did push me to practice violin occasionally though, the way After living in New York and traveling around the world, I can truly some other parents might push their kids to study and get good grades. appreciate what a diverse and beautiful city Houston has become. I am also excited to perform Brahms’ Double Concerto for Violin and Cello with Brinton Smith, our fantastic principal cellist. What do you do to relax when not playing the violin? Some of my hobbies include trying new restaurants, running, biking, playing pool, poker, and basketball. I don’t get on the court very often anymore since jammed fingers and violin aren’t a good combination; instead, I try to attend as many Rockets games as possible. HEALTH Tiny Crustaceans are Titans of Good Health Krill Oil Power by HENRI MERCERON

Discussing health and healthy habits is often not an easy task. It is kind of like

understanding the state of the world economy within the context of globalization. Let’s

just say “it’s complicated”. One year, you are told not to eat eggs; the next year, you are

told that it is healthy to consume them daily. Coffee is bad; coffee is good. Everyone has

heard that they should take calcium. They may not be aware that getting calcium from

supplements comprised of crushed oyster shells are loaded with contaminants and should

be avoided. And this brings me to the subject of the explosive popularity of people eating

fish in an effort to eat heart healthy.

It all begins with the fact that science has determined that fish, astaxanthin, one of the most potent antioxidants known to science. Wild particularly fatty fish such as salmon, are high in omega fatty acids (DHA salmon, amongst a host of other aquatic life, in turn, feed on an endless and EPA) that are very effective in maintaining a healthy heart. Larger more fatty 3 fats (DHA and EPA), there are a number of factors that make the latter fish have a higher concentration of toxic contaminants. Specifically, the a superior choice. First, krill oil has a shelf life of more than two years, contaminants include mercury, PCBs, radioactive strontium, dioxin, and attributable to the presence of vitamins E, A, and D, and the astaxanthin heavy metals such as cadmium, lead, chromium and arsenic. In fact, the antioxidant strength of krill oil is 48 legions of Americans. Gotmercury.org is a site that can provide more times more potent than that of fish oil. Secondly, krill oil contains a form of choline which is known 4 times by just eating one 12 ounce can of tuna fish per week. Not only have farm raised salmon been found to have The antioxidant strength of higher levels of PCBs in addition to the other “normal” contaminants found in wild fish, the cramped conditions in which they are raised requires krill oil is 48 times more potent that they be given antibiotics and anti-parasitic medication. May 2012 |19 TRAVEL Staying in America’s Most European City New Orleans by HENRI MERCERON

I love visiting New Orleans. It is so close to Houston that I can just hop in my car and

drive a quick five hours to my hotel of choice. The city is shrouded in a history so rich

and a culture so vibrant that I cannot help but feel instantly and totally transported to

a different place and time. Considered to be America’s most European city, New Orleans

is a patchwork of short uneven buildings and even more wildly uneven balconies; while

they may appear fragile, many have stood the test of time for more than 200 years.

The quaintness envelops you like a warm and comfortable blanket. Beyond the legendary high tide of inebriation and celebration that sweeps over Bourbon Street every minute of the day and night, you can lose yourself in a mosaic of art galleries, antique stores and a host of other establishments that offer an eclectic array of goods. Having discovered Whisnant Galleries last year, it has become the highlight of my visits. Like the Smithsonian Le Pavillon Grand Lobby staircase Museum and the Louvre, once you enter its doors on Royal Street across from the Monteleone Hotel, you are overwhelmed by the sheer volume and novelty of the items for sale in the 12,000 square foot showroom. There is anywhere (and I order grilled scallops everywhere), when it is oyster season, a Buddha from Thailand that stands 5 feet tall and which is made out of they serve raw smoked oysters on sizzling hot oyster shells.
