ȹϽ௑ˮ઄ʷАςࡼ͊ԓІּ Astor Piazzolla, the last great Tango composer, was at the܃αc௖ .ɻࠓc๫ࣂˢؿ௚஥ɈʋಳΣˀɻʨeˢ peak of his creativity when a stroke killed him in 1992כϋ ᔴ඀ȿ҈ࠨ Ķ ࡨ͂ᓿ઄ʷؿ࿨ീc—ȹᐰ༞Пɖ He left us, in the words of the old tango, “without saying good bye”, and that day the musical face of Buenos Aires Ӏτ˜eԅʨc̠փጻ౜ϴС౜ؿࠑᅥࠍႜޯಳ was abruptly frozen. The creation of that face had started c஛ိࠑᅥࠍႜ඀նکཫ೶ȿ͵ЍؿeϛΛα a hundred years earlier from the unlikely combination of ݘؿຝۗdঢ়ฟɁڈѼι Ķ ԅܰȹိ౅΋ȿ African rhythms underlying gauchos’ couplets, sung in ؿྦྷ̏dϹϹԈɩςЍؿ਎ഈd˞Ϊ༠ቧϹԓ the style of Sicilian canzonettas over an accompanying ೶ˢЂۗؿթऋࠑᅥࠓࣟe຤༦ั˂ݟᓤc Andalucian guitar. As the years passed all converged ɐ߸ိိ஭⾫കΕऒΛख़ʹࠓೄӸɐiȹͧ towards the bandoneon: a small accordion-like instrument ؿᄨਝᅥኂcᗘЍɩʹࠓೄЎӀτ without keyboard that was invented in Germany in theע޵ೕ˖ th ,αˤ 19 century to serve as a portable church organ and which୽഼ݯ—˿ᙙβ㣍ਦࠓೄ˜cٱᒄᆚc๫ αˤΑ after finding its true home in the bordellos of BuenosΕ̠̟ஔ̵ਂؿѠ৑ໃΔ࣓́c Aires’s slums in the 1920’s, went back to Europe to ઄ʷܰقȹ܃ผcɾمࠓᗕʱቭɐݚ܃ᓊᅩݘ conquer Paris’ high society in the 1930’s. Since then it ᅥඅ̦ௐe reigned as the essential instrument for any Tango ensemble.

ֺτോᄩ઄ʷؿိိ஭ወᐛΕ͊ԓІּؿऒΛख़ Piazzolla’s bandoneon was able to condense all the ࠓೄ໧iၦ৽ᔶၠ՗Ӹᔜؿֲോᄩcగܰˢ symbols of tango. The eroticism of legs and torsos in theʹ ᓯ௰ؿ&ɣሁ dance was reduced to the intricate patterns of his virtuoso ܞࠔ҄Δ༝Ӷd৽А፟၃ᇲᔵؿɊ cᄦّۗ fingers (a simple C major scale in the bandoneon zigzags۾ㅶҏ੡ڳࠑආcΕऒΛख़ʹࠓೄᄦؒ ೶ h࿨ّᄯᝎؿᐰᇃcᛰι so much as to leave an inexperienced player’s fingers̨ܞʹɈ೟Ⴋɖผ˲ ऒΛख़ʹࠓೄɺᒾ඀΋ؿՓмᐰhၦّؿӘɥ tangled). The melancholy of the singer’s voice was transposed to the breathing of the bandoneon’s continuous ԓІּΕ̎ɐؿۜබiӸ᛽ॎ͊כ᛽ଊڬࣩล opening and closing. The macho attitude of the tangueros ടऒΛख़יඪćၠምട຺ཱcɐࠍکcॳɟق was reflected in his pose on stage: standing upright, chest ʹࠓೄcࣂϤᐾ঴dࣂϤଁᎾdࣂϤႦᅍe forward, right leg on a stool, the bandoneon on top of it, being by turns raised, battered, caressed. αc҈Ε΁ᅩʩfЦμ՗ʱСfᑇʩਅར᎞ I composed Last Round in 1996, prompted by Geoff Nuttall αc҈੡੪͊ԓІּɻ and Barry Shiffman. They heard a sketch of the secondɎᄘι௖ୄΑe cᄘɎȿ଱ɀᅥ௃ؿউᆨeЦμ՗ movement, which I had written in 1991 upon hearing the܃ࠓؿࣱࢠ news of Piazzolla’s stroke, and encouraged me to finish ᑇʩਅᚹ༦˞܃cར᎞҈Ґᅥ௃ѧιcԎΛᄘ it and write another movement to complement it. The title ȹ࠯ᅥ௃৉΋eᅟᕀˮϬ߈Сෙfޫෑᔁဍ is borrowed from a short story on boxing by Julio Cortázar, ȹᆵ˞ࢪᎾݯ˚ᕀؿ೛ᆵɩ႓cᒔ௵͊ԓІּ the metaphor for an imaginary chance for Piazzolla’s ؿᆢΛωၤɁ৽ଷ e spirit to fight one more time (he used to get into fistfightsکˢ́ ؿრብʹωฉ৞ Ґᅥς๫Аȹ̎ଉ෱ɻؿऒΛख़ʹࠓೄe throughout his life). The piece is conceived as an idealized҈ ईΔᏀᎦ஛ͧᅥኂc଱ɀᅥ௃ bandoneon. The first movement represents the act of aଁٲ଱ȹᅥ௃ˤ ȹᐰོࢠcȹᐰѽ̷֣ಲͤ˅ؿୄรོࢠ violent compression of the instrument and the secondכնڬ ԑྡྷɐc஛࠯ᅥ௃ܰࠖʲ෱ςc࣓ኣඨթ࿨ʹ a final, seemingly endless opening sigh (it is actually a αˤΊςጱෲؿ̠փጻ౜ fantasy over the refrain of the song My Beloved Buenosݤ౜f༆ᄨဍ˺ Aires, composed by the legendary Carlos Gardel in the ϴС౜৹࿨ᄘιe ௖ୄΑɖ઄ʷၦςؿ 1930’s). But Last Round is also a sublimated tango ҊጫcͅɻංؿГࠑɣొೄޚജeԭୂ̒ࠇۗʃק dance. Two quartets confront each other, separated by the ʗང඀cɩొೄʹ՗ɻొೄʹ஭ॎട࿫ۗcగཫ focal bass, with violins and violas standing up as in the ɻࠔཛؿɶcగཫᐣ኷ traditional tango orchestras. The bows fly in the air asيඨ଻઄ʷᅥඅȹᅚeΕ мʵ inverted legs in crisscrossed choreography, always attractingޚၦ৽ؿၠiࣂԳʃي͚፟ؿၦүcཫ࠾ ,Ɍॶ and repelling each other, always in danger of clashingڳખ̬cࣂԳ஭τຆᅁؿ΀፮ޚɌʃڳ ɷॶ஛ᅚ always avoiding it with the immutability that can only beྸێᑷ༦c̋τҐውੱᔝʝݯक़૱ၦү ȹߎe˜ acquired by transforming hot passion into pure pattern.

α˂c৛৺ࠍྦྷᑶሃdᜮଠ՗΃ཀྵؿଁई In March 1907 Mahler had been obliged to resign his ׉Ꮎc୽߾ᖽ˾ၐɖढ़ਝࡼ࿨ჱ৑ࠑᅥᐢဟؿ position as Musical Director of the Vienna State Opera ᓻ৻h˿ܰာɺ௰Ϸcˢ̒ัؿɤԫနСԓΕ in the face of mounting criticism from the press, the audiences and the musicians themselves. To add to his ޴ᆅe৛৺ྡྷΕՇɺȿ஛ᅚ಼כ΃α˂ˀϋ woes, on 5th July his four-year-old daughter, Maria, died of డʨగˮଊใ՗ؿ܃ؿᔶࠇ̨Ꮎcɤԫʫҗ scarlet fever. The cumulative effect on Mahler was too much eᔢ́ൈᒾˮˢ੩τ—ᔶࠍͱʨֲرʶᚺञट and, a few days after Maria’s death, he suffered a mild ஭ܰ heart attack. The doctors identified a “double-sided ʶᕾॠฌ˜cຑ˅ˢౙүdም௰ӹ՗ಌ؈ ˢ௖௩ᚭؿࣱඃݠ৽ c߬ˢͲࠍͤࢠe˿ܰ৛৺ congenital valve defect”, banned him from his favourite ඀ն৛ɺ৤ፇΔԷΈਝ pastimes of walking, cycling and swimming and orderedڏඩඩͤࢠȿȹ࠯˂c Εख़޸ΐડ϶टϤȹञɺ঴c a complete rest. He allowed himself barely one month’sכ౎hୄܞኪͨ ԭ࠯˂ʑ࿄ʹྈኑe respite before embarking on a heavy schedule of international conducting engagements and, inevitably, he collapsed in New York, was found to have septicaemia, and ӶԷొݤဍ܃ωʶᚺञೕٱαc৛৺Ε was dead within two months. ɬॵcϢϢྡྷྡྷؿͤࢠ˾eగΕ஛ࣂcˢ֐ˎؿ ʤɁऋෙᎏᄨfؐ৺К঺ȿȹ̯ီݯɻਝɾର It was in the aftermath of the first onset of the heart ؿ໱එ೽ˢcԯɻν፣ȿΛࠖࡌ໱ؿᄨᘭ̯e condition in 1907, when Mahler did permit himself a ,ᄨᘭ̯ᒖ႓ˮϬ࿵౜fӴऋࣟɾʹcЎᘭّྦྷ brief rest in the Tyrolean mountains, that Theobald Pollak ࡌˤ࿵ႍԯྡྷӀτȻᒨႏᖫc࣓̋ܰኣߜdؒ a friend of his father-in-law, gave him a book called The ԭိᘭ̯ҝᄘϤɰe̳Σ৛৺ʪʪኙ߸i—ˢ Chinese Flute which contained a number of poems written (ɥӀȿcʶᚺɌˮȿɣ by various Chinese poets of the Tang Dynasty (618-907ADۦ௩ᚭ஛එɥeଊΕ۾ translated into German by Hans Bethge. (In fact Bethge had ΡՓᎶȿˢʶɻؿ̳܆ਐᕀm໱ɻಲသؿᄯ no real knowledge of the language in which the original ࠍɐᑹΕͤࢠcٲαࡧc৛৺ᒖಳ˜ᝎ೶e poems were written – an old Chinese dialect fairly close Ўɰ຤ፕȿԯɻȼࠖ໱඀նᖪςe to modern-day Cantonese – and his so-called translations were more in the form of loose adaptations taken from various translations of them into English and French.) As Mahler’s wife later recalled; “He was delighted with it and after the loss of his child and the alarming verdict on his heart, the poems’ infinite melancholy answered his own.” While still ostensibly resting in the summer of 1907, he had selected seven of the poems and begun to set them to music.

ᅥ྆dӘঢ়ࠑʥɤГࠑ It was Mahler’s own decision to cast these seven poemsێҐ஛ȼࠖ໱ୂ΋ݯ—ݯɣ ԭࠖ໱΋ԡݯ (the last two combined into a single movement) as a܃௖ Әɻࠑ Ϥᄘؿ˜͚ᚊςֶ ȹ࠯ᅥ௃ cܰ৛৺Ϭɯؿ˚෮eᄘА౨ංc Symphony for “large orchestra, tenor and contralto (or ,α˂ baritone)”, and he had completed it by October 1909৛৺Λೌ࠳ҝӴऋࣟؿᘭ̯hͲς having along the way made frequent alterations to Bethge’s ˞ٱɺܰ—͚ᚊς˜eᅥς௖ڳ୓ᆨcЎᅟᕀ texts. But instead of calling it a symphony, he first gave it α˂ˀྈ˖భඬɾ࿨ݯᕀcЎԷȿ the title Das Lied vom Jammer der Erde (“The Song of ,Ґࡈ̯ Earthly Sorrows”) which, by the time of its premièreڳ౎ cܞͅʤɁജဍऋ Εᄮ̛ඣࠖ࿫ࣂ ஻ҶᄯᝎؿᅟᕀҝݯɣΔɾ࿨eɣΔɾ࿨ conducted by his friend Bruno Walter in Munich on cɖܰˢАς́૟ԭɣ 20th November 1911, had been changed to the less gloomyۂȹࠖѧኬА܃৛৺௖ܰ ͚ᚊςၤဳ֞ᅥᐲᆵ࿨ς ؿ೶ౠe Das Lied von der Erde (“The Song of the Earth”). ʒ࠯ᅥ௃ͅӘঢ়ࠑ՗ɤɻࠑ͚౧਎ˮe଱ȹᅥ௃ The movements alternate between those sung by tenor భɣΔɾৈ࿨࣓ኣң͉ؿభ࿨Ϸᄘιc and mezzo-soprano, the first, Das Trinklied vom Jammer ඨ der Erde (“The Drinking Song of Earth’s Sorrow”) beingޚң͉ܰࡌˤ௖τΊؿ໱Ɂɾȹc඾ৈιֲc based on a poem by Li Tai Po (who was one of the more ϱcӮ˂ᄧc—Ƀˋࢴ˂Ϥϋ˜eᅥ྆؟էංሶৈ popular Tang Dynasty poets. Well known for being almost ʵɥࣩබΣߧc෋໔Ɋʗޯˮh፭܃Әঢ়ࠑঢ়࿨ continually drunk, it is said that he died of drowning when, ࠥৈࣱ෴ؿќ୮e sitting drunk in a boat at night, he attempted to seize the moon’s reflection from the water). It opens with a sweeping orchestral introduction with prominent horn calls after which the tenor extols the joys of wine as a way of facing sorrow.

ˀሶ঴Ӱҁ Ґ˚ Der Trunkene im Frühling (“The Drunkard in Spring”) isܬࡈ໱ݯң͉ ˀሶৈܬ ూᖒ੡ based on another of Li Tai Po’s poems, in which Mahler’sرᐽؿੱ֧ܬɁ।ؿ⦐⿷ሶྸd᛹ᘨξ ೻೻Ƀκe music beautifully conveys the drunkard’s clumsy ways and his astonishment at the sudden arrival of the Spring.

Springܬ der Lenz ist da, sei kommen über Nacht! is here, it came during the night! ෰ɾ્ོࢠc Aus tiefstem Schauen lauscht’ ich auf, I listen intently, der Vogel singt und lacht! und lacht! the bird sings and laughs! and laughs!

ྦྷৈᑹϬඪe Ich fülle mir den Becher neu I fill my goblet anew und leer’ ihn bis zum Grund and drain it to the bottom c und singe, bis der Mond erglänzt and sing until the moon shines˂עۿࣽ࿨ am schwarzen Firmament! in the dark sky!

йП࣓ኣսࣽಳ ɣ˸́஭̋ܰ౩ɻɩւ  The final movement, Der Abschied (“The Farewell”) ˢؿɬˋ combines two poems by Mong Kao Yen (who spent most พ࢑ɬָ౨Ȼɣɺϭ˞ʥ˔ၐ਼ ೋɖ΃ᅚௐՇઐ੄ ঺Пԭࠖ˞ᔴПɾߕݯ of his life as a low-ranking government administrator) and ᕀؿ໱Аᄘιe፭ടɤɻࠑʦᔍ਎ˮ—̷Ⴉ˜ Wang Wei (who was also a highly respected landscape˚ painter), both of which concern the sorrow of departure. ȹീcࠑᅥ௖܃࿺࿺ࣱౙe The music fades away to nothing at the end as the contralto repeatedly sings the word “ewig” (“forever”).
