Repeal of Baseball's Longstanding Antitrust Exemption: Did Congress Strike out Again? INTRODUCrION "Baseball is everybody's business."' We have just witnessed the conclusion of perhaps the greatest baseball season in the history of the game. Not one, but two men broke the "unbreakable" record of sixty-one home-runs set by New York Yankee great Roger Maris in 1961;2 four men hit over fifty home-runs, a number that had only been surpassed fifteen times in the past fifty-six years,3 while thirty-three players hit over thirty home runs;4 Barry Bonds became the only player to record 400 home-runs and 400 stolen bases in a career;5 and Alex Rodriguez, a twenty-three-year-old shortstop, joined Bonds and Jose Canseco as one of only three men to have recorded forty home-runs and forty stolen bases in a 6 single season. This was not only an offensive explosion either. A twenty- year-old struck out twenty batters in a game, the record for a nine inning 7 game; a perfect game was pitched;' and Roger Clemens of the Toronto Blue Jays won his unprecedented fifth Cy Young award.9 Also, the Yankees won 1. Flood v. Kuhn, 309 F. Supp. 793, 797 (S.D.N.Y. 1970). 2. Mark McGwire hit 70 home runs and Sammy Sosa hit 66. Frederick C. Klein, There Was More to the Baseball Season Than McGwire, WALL ST. • Tony La Russa
Tony La Russa Tony La Russa led his teams to three World Series titles (1989, 2006, and 2011) as a professional baseball manager and accumulated the third most managerial wins (2,728) in Major League Baseball history. That total is only 35 wins behind John McGraw, and 1,003 behind Connie Mack. La Russa, inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2014, currently serves as Baseball Operations Special Advisor for the Los Angeles Angels. A Florida native, La Russa signed to play baseball with the Kansas City Athletics (or “A’s”) at age 17, made his Major League debut in 1960 at age 18, and and went on to play professional baseball for 16 seasons. He played with the A’s (both in Kansas City and Oakland), the Atlanta Braves, and the Chicago Cubs. Towards the end of his playing career, he earned a law degree before he was named the manager of a minor-league affiliate of the Chicago White Sox in 1978. He took over as manager of the White Sox in August of the 1979 season through June, 1986. The highlight of his White Sox tenure was a 99-win season and the Western Division Championship in 1983. It was the team’s first play-off berth in 24 years. Following his time in Chicago, he led the Oakland A’s for 10 years to their highest total wins for three straight seasons, winning the American League pennant each year (1988, 1989, and 1990). In 1989, the team defeated the San Francisco Giants to win the 1989 World Series championship.

  • Socal Vs. Nocal? No Contest the Best Rivalry in Sports Heats Up
SoCal vs. NoCal? No Contest The Best Rivalry in Sports Heats Up By Chris Brown and Casey Shearer It s the latter half of September, which means the fall breezes are blowing and the leaves are changing. The smell of hot-dogs and stale beer is in the air; everybody wants peanuts and Crackerjacks; children run home from school and head to the sandlot. All of which are symptoms of pennant fever. Or at least they should be. But as we look around, nobody seems to care about baseball at all. In what is usually the most exciting time of the year for baseball fans, that special excitement is somehow absent. Even as Mark McGwire and Ken Griffey Jr. chase Babe Ruth and Roger Maris, and Larry Walker chases the triple crown, something is missing: What's missing, kosher hot-dogs? A players? strike? Roy Hobbs? Steve Howe and his crack? The Cubbies? Has baseball become so unpopular so as to lose the interest of all its fans? Is it just that baseball lacks that type of hype, flashy color and big-money that basketball purports or the bone crushing thrills of football? No, what's missing are those heated races that lead to a bad case of pennant fever. With less than two weeks remaining in the season, the playoff picture is all but set in stone.
