Box 52 Hawaii National Park, HI 96718 November, 2004 Mauna Loa Reconnaissance 2003 Executive Summary and Acknowledgements The Mauna Loa Reconnaissance project was designed to generate archival and inventory/survey level recordation for previously known and unknown cultural resources within the high elevation zones (montane, sub-alpine, and alpine) of Mauna Loa. Field survey efforts included collecting GPS data at sites, preparing detailed site plan maps and feature descriptions, providing site assessment and National Register eligibility, and integrating the collected data into existing site data bases within the CRM Division at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (HAVO). Project implementation included both pedestrian transects and aerial transects to accomplish field survey components and included both NPS and Research Corporation University of Hawaii (RCUH) personnel. Reconnaissance of remote alpine areas was needed to increase existing data on historic and archeological sites on Mauna Loa to allow park managers to better plan for future projects. The reconnaissance report includes a project introduction; background sections including physical descriptions, cultural setting overview, and previous archeological studies; fieldwork sections describing methods, results, and feature and site summaries; and a section on conclusions and findings that provide site significance assessments and recommendations. -

Two expeditions, one led by Captain Vancouver and the other led by Comandante Galiano, arrived at Kinghorn Island in Desolation Sound from the south on June 25, 1792. Their mission was to survey the mainland coast for a passage to the east—a northwest passage. At this stage of their work, they had no idea what lay before them as the insularity of Vancouver Island had yet to be established by Europeans. The following day, all four vessels moved up the Lewis Channel and found a better anchorage in the Teakerne Arm. For seventeen days, small-boat expeditions set out from this safe anchorage to explore the Homfray Channel, Toba Inlet, Pryce Channel, Bute Inlet, and the narrow passages leading westward through which the sea flowed back and forth with astounding velocity. -

Dunae, Department of History Departmental Member In the years between 1789 and 1792 the shores of what is now British Columbia were opened to European scrutiny by a series of mostly Spanish expeditions. As the coastline was charted and explored by agents of European empires, the Pacific Northwest captured the attention of Europe. In order to carry out these explorations the Spanish relied on what turned out to be an experiment in ‗gentle‘ imperialism that depended on the support of the indigenous ―colonized‖. This thesis examines how the Spanish envisioned their imperial space on the Northwest Coast and particularly how that space was shaped through the exploration of the Salish Sea. -

Urrea Master of Arts University of Oregon History Department September 2019 Title: “Our People Scattered:” Violence, Captivity, and Colonialism on the Northwest Coast, 1774-1846” This thesis interrogates the practice, economy, and sociopolitics of slavery and captivity among Indigenous peoples and Euro-American colonizers on the Northwest Coast of North America from 1774-1846. Through the use of secondary and primary source materials, including the private journals of fur traders, oral histories, and anthropological analyses, this project has found that with the advent of the maritime fur trade and its subsequent evolution into a land-based fur trading economy, prolonged interactions between Euro-American agents and Indigenous peoples fundamentally altered the economy and practice of Native slavery on the Northwest Coast. -

PRESTON ICF 630 K Street, Suite 400 Sacramento, California 95814 [email protected] ABSTRACT Dichelostemma capitatum (Benth.) Alph.Wood, traditionally treated as one of five geophyte species included in Dichelostemma Kunth, a genus endemic to the western USA and northern Mexico, has been the subject of nearly perpetual taxonomic confusion since the early 19 th century. In this paper, I review the errors that perpetuated the misapplication of names to D. capitatum , resurrect Dipterostemon Rydb. as the alternative genus for D. capitatum , and propose new infraspecific combinations. Dichelostemma pulchellum (Salisb.) A. Heller, a name persistently misapplied to D. capitatum , is a confused name that is synonymous with D. congestum (Sm.) Kunth. Dipterostemon capitatus (Benth.) Rydb. subsp. pauciflorus (Torr.) R.E. Preston, comb. nov. , and D. capitatus (Benth.) Rydb. subsp. lacuna-vernalis (L.W. Lenz) R.E. Preston, comb. nov. , are proposed. The genus Dichelostemma traditionally has consisted of five geophyte species endemic to the western USA and northern Mexico (Pires 2002; Pires & Keator 2012). Phylogenetic studies place Dichelostemma in the Themidaceae (Fay & Chase 1996; Fay et al. 2000; Pires et al. 2001; Pires & Sytsma 2002) and more recently in the subfamily Brodiaeoideae of the Asparagaceae (Chase et al. 2009; Steele et al. 2012; Chen et al. 2013). These studies also indicate that Dichelostemma is not monophyletic; Dichelostemma capitatum (Benth.) Alph.Wood is sister to the clade that includes Brodiaea and the other four species of Dichelostemma . -

This large and detailed chart is one of the most important and technically impressive monuments of Enlightenment Era cartography. It delineates the entire West Coast of North America from just south of San Diego California, all the way north to just past the site of modern Anchorage, Alaska. While some areas remained to be clarified or refined, overall the often heavily indented coastline is captured with amazing detail and accuracy. Notably it includes the first comprehensive printed mapping of the Pacific Northwest, including the earliest impressions of Puget Sound, Vancouver Harbour, and Strait of George, as well as the first depiction of the insularity of Vancouver Island. It is the culmination of the very best surveys of the West Coast available towards the end of the 18th Century, including those of James Cook, the Comte de La Pérouse, and Robert Gray, as well as surveys conducted by the Spanish Armada Real. A Remarkable Garden David Douglas and the Shrub-steppe of the Columbia Plateau JACK NISBET 210 Rock Garden Quarterly Vol. 70 (3) IN LATE JUNE of 1825, Scottish naturalist David Douglas took his first peek at the arid world of the Inland Northwest. Traveling upstream on the Columbia River with a canoe brigade of fur agents and their season’s trade goods, he ventured through the Columbia Gorge and stepped ashore for the long portage between the two great rapids known as the Dalles and Celilo Falls. Like most first-time visitors, he was shocked at the scale of the massive basalt flows that hung over the Gorge, then stunned by the desiccated landscape that stretched off endlessly to the east. “Nothing but extensive plains and barren hills, with the greater part of the herbage scorched and dead by the intense heat,” he wrote in his journal. Despite such heat, the energetic Douglas picked up some wonderful plants during his hike between the rapids, including a sunny yellow blazing star (Mentzelia laevicaulis) that provided him with ripe seeds to ship back to England. He dug up two different kinds of evening primrose in flower that he transplanted into his turnip patch at Fort Vancouver, hoping to gather seeds from them as well. And he discovered enough mature samples of Clarkia pulchella, already named after explorer William Clark but not yet cultivated outside its native ground, to turn it into one of the hottest garden offerings at London's Royal Horticultural Society’s 1828 summer plant sale. 211 Born in 1799 in the village of Scone, Perthshire, as the son of a stonemason, Douglas’s behavior at the local school gave little indication that he might be destined for anything greater than fishing, the care of abandoned birds, and rambling in the nearby hills. -

Timekeeping and astronomy were complementary methods for ascertaining longitude; they were carried out using chronometers and by taking lunar observations. The article explains who was responsible for handling the astronomical readings on the expedition; the performance of the chronometers used; Flinders’s comparisons of the longitudinal readings with the work of previous navigators; and the reasons why dissemination of the longitudes taken during the voyage was delayed. The article shows how the combined use of chronometers and lunar observations helped Flinders to achieve scientific accuracy in his charting of coastal Australia in the atlas to his major work entitled A Voyage to Terra Australis. Francis Masson at the Cape and around the world: a life devoted to botany and natural science Barbara HELLY Introduction At the end of the 18th century, during the period of the Enlightenment, Francis Masson worked for the Royal Society of London for the Improvement of Natural Knowledge. He started as an anonymous staff member of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, which had been officially created in 1759. But a decade later, he was already taking a most active part in the successful development of this new institution’s world ambitions in botany. Francis Masson’s contribution to the botanical discoveries of his time has been regularly commented upon, but often times the articles have dealt with specific fields of his activities or they have presented the main events of his life for encyclopaedias. -
