    Biographies for the 2021 Slate of Nominees for the NAIS Board of Trustees The nominations for a first term on the trustees' slate are: • John Austin, head of school, Deerfield Academy (MA) John Austin began his tenure as Deerfield Academy’s 56th head of school July 1, 2019. Previously, he served as headmaster at King’s Academy in Jordan for nine years. Austin came to King’s from St. Andrew’s School (DE), where he joined the faculty in 1987, and he and his wife taught and coached while serving as dorm parents. Austin served as a class advisor, chair of St. Andrew’s English Department, associate academic dean for the humanities, and dean of students. A graduate of Williams College, he holds a master of arts, master of philosophy, and doctoral degrees in English and comparative literature from Columbia University, along with a master’s from the Bread Loaf School of English at Middlebury College. Apply online at sss.nais.org/parents. Step 1: Prepare to Apply Find out from each school its application deadlines and requirements. T en gather any materials you will need to reference as you answer the questions in the PFS. Step 2: Complete Your Online PFS From your PFS Online Dashboard, choose to begin a new PFS for the academic year for which you are applying. As you work, you can stop and save your work at any time then log in again using your email address and PFS Online password. Step 3: Pay For and Submit Your PFS Once you have completed all the f elds of the PFS, on the Pay and Submit screen you will choose your method of secure payment ($41.00). Once you submit your PFS, your information is sent immediately to schools. It cannot be withdrawn from the PFS system and your money cannot be refunded. Step 4: “Manage” Any Additional Documents You Must Submit On the Manage Documents screen, you can see what additional documents you should submit to SSS as part of your application, track the receipt of documents you submitted, and upload documents from your computer. You have to remember that for every one of me, there are hundreds or thousands of black stu- dents with at least equal talent who don’t get a chance. – Barack Obama1 Even for veteran observers of the New York independent school scene, the May 9, 2008 Smart Connections conference was an eye-opening expe- rience. Hosted by Prep for Prep, the 30-year old leadership development nonprofit that identifies talented students of color in New York’s public schools and prepares them for placement in independent schools, the meet- ing brought together 200 nonprofit executives, administrators, and social entrepreneurs from across the country and around the world. They shared ideas on improving and growing their various education and diversity ini- tiatives, a number of which work with leading New York City independent schools as well as the country’s top boarding schools. It was not long ago that the leaders of such organizations could have met comfortably around a small conference table. In 1957 the Boys Club of New York established the nation’s first Independent School Placement program. A Better Chance, aimed specifically at young people of color, followed soon thereafter. Prep for Prep joined their ranks in 1978.
