The Legend of Rock Paper Scissors Drew Daywalt (author); Adam Rex (illustrator) From New York Times bestselling creators Drew Daywalt, author of The Day the Crayons Quit and The Day the Crayons Came Home, and Adam Rex, author- illustrator of Frankenstein Makes a Sandwich, comes a laugh-out-loud hilarious picture book about the epic tale of the classic game Rock, Paper, Scissors. You’ve played the game. Now read the legend of how it all began . Long ago, in an ancient and distant realm called the Kingdom of Backyard, there lived a warrior named ROCK. Meanwhile in the Empire of Mom’s Home Office, a second great warrior sought the glory of battle. And his name was PAPER. At the same time, in the Kitchen Realm, in the tiny village of Junk Drawer, lived a third warrior. They called her SCISSORS. These three were the strongest, smartest, and fastest in all the land. Time and again they beat the most fearsome opponents they could find: an apricot, a computer printer—even frozen, breaded, dinosaur-shaped chicken nuggets! But when the warriors finally meet each other, the most epic round of battles begins . and never ends. That is why, to this day, children around the world honor these worthy adversaries by playing ROCK, PAPER, SCISSORS! Drew Daywalt is an award-winning, New York Times #1 bestselling children's author and horror screenwriter whose books include The Day the Crayons Quit and Star Wars: BB-8 on the Run. • Queer Identities and Glee
IDENTITY AND SOLIDARITY IN ONLINE COMMUNITIES: QUEER IDENITIES AND GLEE Katie M. Buckley A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Music August 2014 Committee: Katherine Meizel, Advisor Kara Attrep Megan Rancier © 2014 Katie Buckley All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Katherine Meizel, Advisor Glee, a popular FOX television show that began airing in 2009, has continuously pushed the limits of what is acceptable on American television. This musical comedy, focusing on a high school glee club, incorporates numerous stereotypes and real-world teenage struggles. This thesis focuses on the queer characteristics of four female personalities: Santana, Brittany, Coach Beiste, and Coach Sue. I investigate how their musical performances are producing a constructive form of mass media by challenging hegemonic femininity through camp and by producing relatable queer female role models. In addition, I take an ethnographic approach by examining online fan blogs from the host site Tumblr. By reading the blogs as a digital archive and interviewing the bloggers, I show the positive and negative effects of an online community and the impact this show has had on queer girls, allies, and their worldviews. iv This work is dedicated to any queer human being who ever felt alone as a teenager. v ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I would like to extend my greatest thanks to my teacher and advisor, Dr. Meizel, for all of her support through the writing of this thesis and for always asking the right questions to keep me thinking. I would also like to thank Dr.

Glee and Flash Mobs 1 Glee, Flash Mobs, and the Creation of Heightened Realities In May of 2009 the television series Glee (Fox, 2009-2015) made its debut on the Fox network, in the coveted post-American Idol (2002-present) timeslot. Glee was already facing an uphill battle due to its musical theatre genre; the few attempts at a musical television series in the medium’s history, Cop Rock (ABC, 1990) and Viva Laughlin (CBS, 2007) among them, had been overall failures. Yet Glee managed to defeat the odds, earning high ratings in its first two seasons and lasting a total of six. Critics early on attributed Glee’s success to the popularity of the Disney Channel’s television movie High School Musical (2006) and its subsequent sequels, concerts and soundtracks. That alone cannot account for the long-term sensation that Glee became, when one acknowledges that High School Musical was a stand-alone movie (sequels notwithstanding).

Expressive character identity of teen lesbian characters on Glee & Pretty Little Liars Master’s thesis Elisa Rahikainen University of Jyväskylä Department of language and communication studies English Autumn 2017 JYVÄSKYLÄN YLIOPISTO Tiedekunta – Faculty Laitos – Department Humanistis-yhteiskuntatieteellinen tiedekunta Kieli- ja viestintätieteiden laitos Tekijä – Author Elisa Rahikainen Työn nimi – Title Expressive character identity of teen lesbian characters on ‘Glee’ & ‘Pretty Little Liars’ Oppiaine – Subject Työn laji – Level Englannin kieli Maisterin tutkielma Aika – Month and year Sivumäärä – Number of pages Lokakuu 2017 97 Tiivistelmä – Abstract Seksuaalivähemmistöjen asema heteronormatiivisessa yhteiskunnassa on puhututtanut ahkerasti muutaman viime vuosikymmenen aikana. Globaalisti seksuaalivähemmistöjä laajalle yleisölle ovat tehneet tutuiksi populaarikulttuuriset valtavirtasisällöt kuten amerikkalaiset elokuvat ja televisiosarjat. Monet nuoret, jotka vasta rakentavat omaa seksuaali-identiteettiään, ammentavat vaikutteita näistä sisällöistä, erityisesti heidän ikäryhmilleen kohdistetuista tuotannoista kuten nuorten sarjoista. Siten on tarpeellista tutkia seksuaalivähemmistöjä edustavien fiktiivisten hahmojen kokonaisvaltaisia representaatioita suosittujen amerikkalaisten nuorten sarjojen kontekstissa ja päivittää tutkimus 1990-luvulta nykypäivää heijastavaksi. Tässä tutkielmassa tarkastelun kohteena ovat nuorten sarjoissa Glee ja Valehtelevat viettelijät (eng. Pretty Little Liars) esiintyvät lesbohahmot Santana Lopez ja Emily
