Using a survey experiment, this project tests whether laws protecting Confederate monuments affect Southerners’ feelings of political efficacy, belonging in their community, and likelihood of politically participating. south.unc.edu/ SPICE IT UP! Darwin Day Lecture: Plasticity, Epigenetics, and Evolution with David Pfennig, Professor of Biology, UNC-Chapel Hill; Celebrate Darwin's birthday by joining us for our annual Darwin Day Lecture! Genes are widely regarded as the fundamental unit of heredity and source of all biological information. Yet many organisms can respond to changes in their environment by altering their features - during their lifetime - via ‘developmental plasticity.’ These environmentally modified traits can sometimes be passed to offspring in the absence of changes in genes; that is, acquired traits can be inherited ‘epigenetically’. In this talk, we will examine whether and how such environmentally induced changes to organismal development affect evolution. As we will see, research into developmental plasticity and epigenetics has major implications not only for evolution but also for human health. ncbg.unc.edu/ MUSIC AT CAT'S CRADLE 8 PM Cat's Cradle / 300 E Main St Carrboro (919) 967-9053 Admission: $18 in advance, $22 day of show.
