MONDAY Nov 13 SONGWRITERS CIRCLE 6:30 PM ArtsCenter, 300-G East Main St Carrboro (919) 929-2787 Whether an experienced or beginning songwriter, nothing is more valuable than the response of other songwriters. The Songwriters’ Circle at The ArtsCenter provides an evening every other week for composers to share their work with each other and receive both encouragement and honest feedback. The bar will be open. This is a time for participating in a sharing community rather than performing. Come to The ArtsCenter Gallery on alternate Mondays to find a community of songwriters developing their craft together. Tours are held at 1 pm on Wednesday, Thursdays and Friday, and anytime during open hours on Saturday (11 - 4) and Sunday (1 - 4). We’re lucky to have wonderful professional artist renzo ortega from the Arts Center in Carrboro who will give instruction in basic painting and drawing techniques and work with students to create artwork inspired by folk art, objects and images from the museum collections. The workshops are free and open to the public! Children grades K- 12 may attend. Parents please plan to remain for the entire class period. UNC vs. Radford www.goheels.com/ CHARLESTON LECTURE: PHILIP & PIERCE FREELON 7 PM TO 8:30 PM Sonja Haynes Stone Center for Black Culture & History, 150 South Road Chapel Hill (919) 962-5665 Join us in the Stone Center Theatre for the 2017 Charleston Lecture in Southern Affairs by Philip and Pierce Freelon, titled “Black Space Making and the Built Environment.” Philip Freelon is a renowned architect who served as the lead designer for the Stone Center as well as the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. Pierce Freelon is a musician and social entrepreneur who founded Blackspace and just ran for Mayor of Durham. These two visionary leaders will discuss past and present challenges and opportunities in the struggle to create spaces for creative expression and social justice.
