Reshi and B.A. Wafai Department of Botany, University of Kashmir, Srinagar, J&K, India [email protected] Abstract: Biological invasions, caused by non-native invasive species are a major factor contributing to ecosystem perturbations and hence are being actively pursued worldwide. Mayweed (Anthemis cotula L.), a native of southern Europe-West Siberia is an aggressive invasive species in Kashmir Himalaya, India. Among the myriad of attributes, seedling emergence time is critical to its successful colonization of habitats with varying levels of soil disturbance. Field studies revealed that the species recruits individuals over an extended period of time from September to May. This recruitment period is interspersed by harsh snowy winter (December-February) and hence the established plants of the species are constituted of pre-winter and post-winter populations, with former contributing to the fitness component of its life history and latter to the survival component. Except for number of achenes per capitulum and achene weight, all other investigated parameters such as stem height, number of primary branches per plant and number of capitula per plant were significantly higher in individuals belonging to pre-winter population in than the individuals constituting the post-winter plants. Fecundity of pre-winter individuals was further enhanced if decapitated by a specific herbivore that results in over-compensatory growth. -

Mining the Essential Oils of the Anthemideae

Accepted 21 November, 2019 Numerous members of the Anthemideae are important cut-flower and ornamental crops, as well as medicinal and aromatic plants, many of which produce essential oils used in folk and modern medicine, the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. These oils and compounds contained within them are used in the pharmaceutical, flavour and fragrance industries. Moreover, as people search for alternative and herbal forms of medicine and relaxation (such as aromatherapy), and provided that there are no suitable synthetic substitutes for many of the compounds or difficulty in profiling and mimicking complex compound mixtures in the volatile oils, the original plant extracts will continue to be used long into the future. This review highlights the importance of secondary metabolites and essential oils from principal members of this tribe, their global social, medicinal and economic relevance and potential. CHAPTER 1 THE CALIFORNIA FLORA The Californian Floristic Province California is a large state with a complex topography and a great diversity of climates and habitats,resulting in a very large assemblage of plant species that vary in size and include both the world’s largest trees and some of the smallest and most unique plant species. In order to create manageable units for plant investigations, botanists have divided the continental landform into geographic units called floristic provinces. These units reflect the wide variations in natural landscapes and assist botanists in predicting where a given plant might be found. Within the borders of California, there are three floristic provinces, each extending beyond the state’s political boundaries. The California Floristic Province includes the geographi- cal area that contains assemblages of plant species that are more or less characteristic of California and that are best de- veloped in the state.This province includes southwestern Ore- gon and northern Baja California but excludes certain areas of the southeastern California desert regions, as well as the area of the state that is east of the Sierra Nevada–Cascade Range axis (map 1).The flora of the desert areas and those east of the Sierra Nevada crest are best developed outside the state, and therefore, parts of the state of California are not in the Cali- fornia Floristic Province. The Great Basin Floristic Province includes some of the area east of the Sierra Nevada and some regions in the northeastern part of the state, although some botanists consider the latter area to belong to another distinct floristic province, the Columbia Plateau Floristic Province. -

On the plantation (14 hectares) located in northern Serbia (Pancevo), as well as on the wild plants in the vicinity of Belgrade, the powdery mildew was observed on all green parts of chamomile plants in spring during 2010 and 2011. The first symptoms were manifested as individual, circular, white spots of pathogens mycelium formed on the surface of stem and both sides of the leaves. Later on, the spots merged and dense mycelia completely covered all parts of infected plants. The consequence of this disease is the destruction of foliage, which prevents obtaining of high-quality herbal products for pharmaceutical purposes. Based on the morhological characteristics the pathogen was determined as Golovinomyces cichoracearum (syn. Erysiphe cichoracearum ). It is already known as a pathogen of chamomile, but for the first time is described in Serbia. Matricaria chamomilla L. Scientific name: Matricaria chamomilla L. Synonyms: Matricaria recutita, Chamomilla recutita Family: Compositae/Asteraceae Genus: Matricaria Species: chamomilla Common name: Babuna, Persian Chamomile Parts used: Flower, oil, root Plant Description: Matricaria chamomilla is an annual plant.Its thin spindle-shaped roots penetrate flatly into the soil. The stem is erect, branched and has a height of 10–80 cm. The leaves are bi to tri-pinnate, long and narrow. The flower heads are 10 to 30 mm in diameter, pedunculate, and heterogamous. The tubular florets are golden yellow in color and 1.5 to 2.5 mm long. The 11 to 27 white plant flowers are 6 to 11 mm long, 3.5 mm wide, and arranged concentrically. The receptacle is 6 to 8 mm wide, flat in the beginning and later hollow, conical or cone-shaped. The fruit is the form of yellowish-brown achene. Chemical Constituents: Essential oils (farnesene, bisabolol, chamazulene), sesquiterpenes, flavonoids, coumarins, and polyacetylenes are considered the most important constituents of the chamomile drug. The coumarins are represented in M. chamomilla by herniarin, umbelliferone, and other minor ones. (Z)- and (E)-2-β-d-glucopyranosyloxy-4-methoxycinnamic acid (GMCA), the glucoside precursor of herniarin, were described as native compounds in chamomile. Eleven bioactive phenolic compounds, such as herniarin and umbelliferone (coumarin), chlorogenic acid and caffeic acid (phenylpropanoids), apigenin, apigenin-7-O-glucoside, luteolin and luteolin-7- O-glucoside (flavones), quercetin and rutin (flavonols), and naringenin (flavanone) are found in chamomile extract. Plants contain essential oil, chamasulene, apigenin, alpha heteroside, salicylic acid and non-crystalline beta-heteroside. -

FRUITS: KINDS AND TERMS THE IMPORTANT PART OF THE LIFE CYCLE OFTEN IGNORED Technically, fruits are the mature ovaries of plants that contain ripe seeds ready for dispersal • Of the many kinds of fruits, there are three basic categories: • Dehiscent fruits that split open to shed their seeds, • Indehiscent dry fruits that retain their seeds and are often dispersed as though they were the seed, and • Indehiscent fleshy fruits that turn color and entice animals to eat them, meanwhile allowing the undigested seeds to pass from the animal’s gut We’ll start with dehiscent fruits. The most basic kind, the follicle, contains a single chamber and opens by one lengthwise slit. The columbine seed pods, three per flower, are follicles A mature columbine follicle Milkweed seed pods are also large follicles. Here the follicle hasn’t yet opened. Here is the milkweed follicle opened The legume is a similar seed pod except it opens by two longitudinal slits, one on either side of the fruit. Here you see seeds displayed from a typical legume. Legumes are only found in the pea family Fabaceae. On this fairy duster legume, you can see the two borders that will later split open. Redbud legumes are colorful before they dry and open Lupine legumes twist as they open, projecting the seeds away from the parent The bur clover modifies its legumes by coiling them and providing them with hooked barbs, only opening later as they dry out. The rattlepods or astragaluses modify their legumes by inflating them for wind dispersal, later opening to shed their seeds. -

Accepted 9 December, 2011 Amongst many novel interactions that alien plants forge with their new associates in the introduced range, the role of Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) mutualism and herbivory has been hitherto studied separately. Since these associations operate concurrently in nature to influence plant performance, we attempted to investigate their interactive effect on invasiveness of Mayweed Chamomile (Anthemis cotula L.), a highly invasive species in the Kashmir Himalaya, India. Survey of some field populations of A. cotula in native (European) and introduced (Kashmir Himalayan) regions revealed high incidence of phytophagous parasites on the species in native range, in contrast to almost enemy-free populations in the introduced range. However, occasional association of an aphid herbivore with some individuals of A. cotula in the introduced range was found to have positive influence on traits contributing to invasiveness of the species. We subsequently established a pot experiment in which A. cotula was grown with and without mycorrhizas and herbivores, both in isolation and combination. Results revealed that mycorrhizal inoculation and herbivory, both in isolation and in combination, influenced significantly growth and fitness, hence invasiveness, of A. cotula. -
