A trademark of the Stan Lee-Jack Kirby years was their epic sweep, and these 10 issues encompass three different story arcs that Fantastic Four - Volume 5 themselves connected. When Medusa returns in issue 44, she's not simply a member of a supervillain group, but one of the Inhumans, super-powered beings led by the mighty Black Bolt, and the FF must follow them to the Great Refuge. If all that's not momentous enough, enter the most noble and tragic character of all, the Silver Surfer, the herald for the almighty Galactus, who consumes planets not because he's evil, but because he must in order to survive. In a issue span, it's hard to imagine a similar wave of classic characters and mind-bending concepts, and yet Lee and Kirby also take the time to make their characters achingly human. Simply put, comics never got better than this, and this Masterworks edition reprints every issue in its full-color glory. Get A Copy. Hardcoverpages. Even the less momentous issues in this collection are fun in their own way, but the highlight is definitely the three-issue finale. I must admit that there were times that the science on display was a bit over my head: But kidding aside, this was thoroughly entertaining and the artwork by Jack Kirby is just great. But beyond that there's both majestic scenes and touching moments and, in the midst of the clunky art, some beautiful design. Oct 20, Molly Lazer rated it really liked it Shelves: graphic-novels. The stories in this volume are epic in scope, and really serve to open up the world of the Fantastic Four. I found it surprising how much focus Fantastic Four - Volume 5 was on other characters in this set of 10 issues. The FF almost become supporting characters in their own book once the Inhumans show up, and the team has very little to do with defeating Galactus with the exception of Johnny's awesome flight to the other end of the universe. Despite my wish that the FF had more to do in these issues, my kids LOV The stories in this volume are epic in scope, and really serve to open up the world of the Fantastic Four. This was my first time Fantastic Four - Volume 5 the Galactus saga. While I am impressed with the story overall, I was surprised at Fantastic Four - Volume 5 easily the Silver Surfer turns against his master. I knew that it was because of Alicia, but I didn't expect that just a few minutes of conversation with her would be enough to change his whole outlook on his mission. Alicia is awesome, of course, but still The storylines in this set Fantastic Four - Volume 5 ten issues really bleed into each other, rather than being done-in-ones, making this volume feel more reminiscent of the decompression of modern comics. It works, though, since there is still a lot going on in each issue. I was so excited to finally read Reed and Sue's wedding issue, but it turned out to have everything I hate about modern comics: every super hero in existence coming to fight every villain, resulting in little-to-no focus on the characters the issue is actually supposed to be about. I suppose that in its time, this was an impressive feat. But these days, when so many event comics are like this, I really wanted the focus to be Fantastic Four - Volume 5 the Fantastic Four. Getting caught up with foru volumes - way too many firsts to go into detail, but these stories are terrific. Okay, the Fantastic Four - Volume 5 bits, like Reed telling Sue that she's "only" a female, don't age that well, but seeing the entire cosmology of the FF established, and develop naturally and organically is powerful stuff. The plot are adventurous and fun, and the character work still better than most superhero comics today. Highly recommended. May 25, anthony e. Yuck and the story itself is so well-read now 50 years later that it only really entertains because of Kirby's art. Lee is a heavy-handed writer, and if he could just get out of the way, I feel like this whole series might be better. Apr 05, Chris W rated it liked it. Silver age goofiness at a new high with the Fantastic Four. Out of all the classic Fantastic 4 volumes this is the best one by far. But overall, this is goofy and often times clunky but it has it's charm. Everyone raves about the Galactus saga, but I find it underwhelming. That being said, it does mark the turning point, where the art opens up and this book finally starts to become about big ideas, crazy machines, and Kirby becomes more influential Fantastic Four - Volume 5 the title. This Fantastic Four - Volume 5 where the art goes from good to great. Jun 20, Justin rated it really liked it Shelves: graphic-novels. Pretty incredible. In 11 issues. Lee and Kirby are gaining more confidence and it's helping them further get away from old-fashioned and simplistic comics. Volume 3 wasn't good enough to make me want to keep reading, but I eventually read volume 4 and immediately wanted to read Fantastic Four - Volume 5 5, and now want to read volume 6. The structure of the stories works really well in trade paperback format, but it would have been anno The introductions of the Inhumans, Galactus, and Silver Surfer are some of the best material yet in the series. The structure of the stories works really well in trade paperback format, but it would have been annoying as hell to me to read them as single issues, since one story will resolve ten pages into the issue after the cliffhanger and then Fantastic Four - Volume 5 into something else, which seems a cheap ploy to sell issues. It's not as bad as it sounds, until the Galactus story is ended after page 10 and the rest of the issue is about Johnny Storm going to college and introducing characters like Coach Sam Thorne, his wife Belle, and star player Whitey Mullins. At least Johnny actually meets Wyatt Wingfoot and Dean Asher--nothing too exciting at the ending, and the Silver Surfer, who stars on the cover, disappears after page Volume 4 ended on the cliffhanger of Ben leaving the group after Reed forces him to become the Thing again in order to defeat Dr. Doom, after the four had all lost their powers. He ends up captured by the Frightful Four and possessed by their Id machine, but we start to realize Madam Medusa isn't Fantastic Four - Volume 5 bad and apparently just joined the group to hide from the Seeker, who tries to keep the Inhumans, with their genetically engineered special powers, away from humanity. The X-Men are name-dropped several times here in a manner that makes sense. For the most part, the story arcs are closely related, so this volume feels more contemporary than the earlier ones, and the inking of Joe Sinnott over Kirby's pencils is much more majestic than that of Vince Colletta.
