•.?c~ INTERVIEW • When I asked Louise Hay for a personal interview, she suggested I meet her the next day at the hotel where her seminar was to take place. I arrived a little early and was asked by Hay to sit with a partner for the last exercise of the day. Sitting knee to knee with a very attractive man, Hay asked us to look into each other's eyes for what seemed to be a rather extensive period of time. Uncomfortableness mixed with pleaSUre persisted throughout the exercise, which also included touching each other's hair, face and hands, and even smelling each other-at the neck. Then the inevitable hug, which I also shared with many of the other attendees. During the interview, I told her of the feelings I had throughout the exercise, and that having those feelings bothered me. "Okay, so you're physically attracted. So what? Do you go to bed with everybody you're attracted to?" "No." "You enjoy it on the level you have it. If you're physically attracted, that's wonderful. You got to touch. Just take it where it is. Don't demand that it's something that it isn't, and don', feel left out because it isn't something that it isn't." Her honesty is appealing and helpful. Helpful because she's a metaphysical counselor and has been for the past 14 years. During the early years, she put together a little book, Heal Your Body, which listed metaphysical causations for physical illnesses in the body. (Exem. pIe: PROBLEM-Cancer. PROBABLE CAUSE-Deep hurt. Long-standing resentment. Deep secret or grief eating away at the self. Carrying hatreds. What's the use. NEW THOUGHT PATTERN-Ilovingly forgive and release all of the past. I choose to fill my world with joy, and I love and approve of myself.) Soon afterwards, she was diagnosed as having cancer. Having been raped at five and be» ing been a battered child, it was no wonder she manifested cancer in the vaginal area. She was then forced to prove to herself that mental healing worked. For the next few months, she read and investigated everything she could find on alternative ways to assist her healing process. She knew she had to love and approve of herself. "There was little love expressed in my childhood, and no one had made it okay for me to feel good about myself. I had adopted their [parents] attitudes of continually picking on and criticizing me, which had become second nature." At first, she found it very difficult to look in the mirror and say, "Louise, I love you. I really love you." But because of the mirror exercise and other work, she made progress. She also had the help of a good therapist and a good nutritionist. After a thorough mental and physical cleansing, and six months after her diagnosis, "I was able to get the medical profession to agree with what I already knew-that I no longer had even a trace of cancer!" That story is recounted at the end of her book You Can Heal Your Life," which begins by taking the reader through a counseling session with Hay.
