Report of Findings for Westheimer Road Between S. Shepherd and Bagby Report of Findings for Westheimer Road between S. Potential Texas Historic Markers Lower Westheimer Corridor Study Report of Findings Page 1 Westheimer Road between Bagby Street and S. Shepherd Drive is a unique Houston street in the Montrose neighborhood. It represents an evolution of use and building types over a period of 100 years. Historically, the street was primarily residential and many of the one‐story bungalow houses remain and many are now in commercial use. Other residential forms on the street include two‐story wood frame and brick single family and multi‐family residential buildings. The multi‐family buildings on the street tend to be duplexes or quadruplexes. Larger scale multifamily apartments and/or condo units were not introduced until the 1980s, 1990s or 2000s and are concentrated to the far eastern and western ends of the study corridor. The scale and random development character are important aspects of the corridor to consider; collectively the variety of development is an important part of the character of the street. Resource Types Representative examples of the identified Resource Types are included in Appendix A and include: R2S ‐ Two story residential, single family, typically now commercial R2D/Q ‐ Two story residential, duplexes and quadruplexes R2CF ‐ Two story residential with commercial storefronts added R1S ‐ Single story residential, single family, now commercial C2 ‐ Two story commercial C1 ‐ One story commercial CSC ‐ Early strip centers CT ‐ Tiny infill I ‐ Institutional buildings IC ‐ Institutional buildings, now commercial The street also has remnants of early twentieth century street signage such as the blue tile curb markers and the concrete pylons with the street names. Streetscape Existing built environment includes pedestrian sidewalks, street trees in some areas, and buildings that abut the sidewalk (property line) and those that are set back with street front parking lots. See Appendix B. Windshield Survey and Inventory SWCA conducted a windshield survey of the corridor between Bagby and S. Shepherd. The windshield survey captured the following data: Street address Building or business name (current) Building or business name (historic) Current use (commercial, institutional, residential) Historic use (commercial, institutional, residential) Number of stories Historic age (considered to be buildings constructed in 1971 or earlier) Recommended as City of Houston Landmark or Protected Landmark Recommended as part of a Local Historic District Lower Westheimer Corridor Study Report of Findings Page 2 The results of the windshield survey were placed in an inventory table. Those buildings that were noted as historic‐age and had minimal changes over time were recommended as City of Houston Landmarks. Additionally, there is a concentration of historic‐age properties in the 1500‐1900 block of Westheimer. This area was identified as needing further study for a potential City of Houston Historic District. A detailed historic resource survey to City of Houston standards is recommended for this area. The inventory table includes the detailed identification of historic‐age and recommended landmarks and districts. See Appendix C and Inventory table below. July 26, 2018 Shawn Laatsch, President Emera Astronomy Center – University of Maine 167 Rangeley Road Orono, ME 04401 Dear Shawn: This letter is in reply to your request of July 24 for how we plan to address safety and security concerns, expressed by the LGBTQ+ community within IPS about Houston being selected as host of the 2022 IPS conference. Houston is a very open-minded, tolerant city where none need be concerned with their safety, as I hope the following points will demonstrate. Houston is home to the largest gay community in Texas, and the 6th-largest in the nation with over 60,000 LGBTQ+ residents. Houston remains the most populous city in the U.S. to elect an openly gay mayor. Anise Parker was elected in 2010, and was re-elected to two additional 2-year terms before leaving office due to term limits. Houston’s current mayor, Sylvester Turner, has made numerous public statements in support of the city’s diversity and tolerance, including this one from a recent press conference: “This is the most diverse city in America,” Turner said. “We acknowledge and celebrate that diversity in all its dimensions. You can be diverse and yet separate, segregated and apart. As Mayor of this City, I want us to be diverse and inclusive, and I want to live in a City where people can be who they are and we can be tolerant of people’s opinions, ideologies, sexual orientation, ethnicities, religion and/or cultures.” Houston is home to the 4th largest Gay Pride parade in the nation.

VOLUME X NUMBER 2 FALL 2010 The Magazine of Sam Houston State University DR. DANA GIBSON SAM HOUSTON STATE UNIVERSITY’S 13 TH PRESIDENT INSIDE SAM HOUSTON STATE UNIVERSITY TOPS $50 MILLION CAMPAIGN GOAL p4 SHSU NAMES TEACHER EDUCATION CENTER IN HONOR OF GARRETTS p7 A NEW HORIZON When I arrived at Sam Houston State University about 18 months ago, I was excited about the opportunity to join this wonderful community as the vice president for Finance and Operations. Now, I know how amazing SHSU is because of the dedication of the faculty and staff that work here. The students are fortunate to have Planting Seeds such dedicated people shaping their academic and administrative experiences. The extraordinary leadership of President Gaertner provided an ongoing legacy of strength in the president’s role at Sam Houston State University. Therefore, I am honored to transition to this new role at Sam Houston. The presidency provides me for Success more possibilities to interact with our energetic students, our enthusiastic alumni and supportive community. We have such strengths and great traditions that provide a strong base upon which to build, evolve and develop new pathways for this ‘grand old university.’ With the wonderful history of strong fiscal management and Dr. Gaertner’s strategic placement of SHSU, I take the helm at an opportune, yet potentially tough, time for the university. We have excellent opportunities to provide our student success model into expanding student arenas, both in distance learning and at the new Woodlands facility. The state’s fiscal situation, while stronger than many areas of the country, is still going to mean a difficult several years for funding.
