BUDROYALE went up soon after the start to stalk the leaders under light rating four wide, moved menacingly from that position on the track into the stretch, gained about even terms, was brushed twice by the winner and wasn't good enough. GOLDEN MISSILE raced within easy striking distance while in behind horses, came out when straightened into the stretch to race five wide, also gained even terms about the furlong grounds but weakened soon after. CHESTER HOUSE stumbled at the start, was badly outrun to the far turn, swung out for the drive and finished willingly. ALMUTAWAKEL (GB) settled soon after the start, raced within easy striking distance while behind the leaders, loomed a solid threat inside CAT THIEF for the drive, but flattened out. LEMON DROP KID swerved in at the start bumping GENERAL CHALLENGE, was outrun to the far turn, made a mild bid to reach contention nearing the final quarter, came out for the drive but lacked a response. BEHRENS, wearing a nasal strip, saved ground from early on, was steadied in behind horses approaching the first turn and failed to contend in a dull effort. OLD TRIESTE went up at once to vie for the lead outside CAT THIEF, gained a clear lead on the backstretch, held on well for a mile and tired. VISION AND VERSE, bumped lightly at the start, raced in a striking position five or six wide for seven furlongs and failed to muster a further response. GENERAL CHALLENGE broke slowly and was bumped soon after, then failed to reach contention. RIVER KEEN (IRE) saved ground to no avail. ECTON PARK was never prominent. CATIENUS was outrun. SUPREME SOUND (GB) moved up soon after the start to stalk the leaders five wide, was finished by the far turn and was eased late. Copyright 2009 Equibase Company LLC. All Rights Reserved..

  • Funny Cide's Epic Kentucky Derby Victory Is Ten Years
Funny Cide’s Epic Kentucky Derby Victory is Ten Years Old By Bill Heller Can it be ten years since a three-year-old gelding named Funny Cide, and a yellow school bus carrying a group of high school friends who owned him, rearranged the racing industry’s position on New York- breds? “I don’t believe it,” his retired Hall of Fame jockey Jose Santos said Tuesday. “It went by too fast.” Funny Cide’s trainer, Barclay Tagg, agreed: “I do have trouble believing that.” Asked what’s the first thing that comes to his mind when someone asks him about Funny Cide, Jose said, “That he was the best three-year-old in my racing career.” These days, Jose has a new career running a feed company, Instride International, which began operating in 2012 and now serves three Florida tracks: Calder, Gulfstream Park and Palm Meadows. “Basically, I’m running the whole thing,” Jose said. “I’ve been selling to the trainers. They are friends of mine.” His client list includes a bunch of New York trainers who winter in Florida, including Todd Pletcher, John Kimmel, Linda Rice, Rick Violette and John Terranova. Funny Cide, a son of Distorted Humor out of Belle’s Good Cide by Slewacide, was bred by WinStar Farm and foaled at Joe and Anne McMahon’s Thoroughbred farm just outside Saratoga Springs. He was originally purchased for $22,000 before Tagg bought him for $75,000 for Sackatoga Stable, an entity formed when several old friends got together for a Memorial Day barbecue in their home town of Sackets Harbor.

SUNDAY, MARCH 29, 2020 CONSTITUTION COLT AQUEDUCT GETS HOSPITAL GO AHEAD; RACING WONT RESUME FOR WINTER OR LAYS DOWN THE LAW SPRING MEETS IN CURLIN FLORIDA DERBY Aqueduct will be re-purposed as a temporary hospital, and racing will not resume there again at the winter or spring meets, according to a press release from the New York Racing Association Saturday afternoon. When racing does resume, it is expected to be at Belmont Park, which is currently scheduled to open Apr. 24. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo raised the possibility of making Aqueduct a temporary hospital at his press briefing Friday, and said he would seek the required permission from the federal government to serve the borough of Queens with a 1,000-plus patient overflow facility at the track. Cuomo has set a goal for New York State to provide COVID-19 patient overflow facilities in each New York City borough as well as Westchester, Rockland, Nassau and Suffolk counties.
