  • Migration Patterns of the Population in Kyrgyzstan
Migration Patterns of the Population in Kyrgyzstan Martin Schuler, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Lausanne, Switzerland Schuler Martin (2007), Les migrations de population en Kirghizstan, in : Espace. Populations. Sociétés. Les populations d’Asie centrale. 2007-1, p.73-89 ; 1. Migration – a Complex Social and Individual Phenomenon To analyse the sphere of migration in Kyrgyzstan means to threat the development of this country. Kyrgyzstan throughout the whole 20th century has been an important destination for immigrants not only from different parts of the Soviet Union, but also from other countries of the world. The majority of the population that not are Kyrgyz natives are immigrants or children and grandchildren of those who came to Kyrgyzstan from other countries. In fact this is the case to such a point that the identity of the inhabitants of the Republic is marked by the contentiousness of personal experience of family or group of history of geographic movements. This is still the case, even if in the 70s and 980s and to some extent even the 90s have been periods of decreasing mobility as will be shown later in this article. The majority of the population is geographically mobile during their lifetime. Migration is linked to people’s personal goals of social and economic integration and professional ambitions. However, migration can also be seen as a strategy of economic progress or for the survival of a family or a group. Thus, migration is a result of individual and collective decisions to find better living conditions in a broad sense: housing, economic opportunities, social integration or safety.

  • Modern Serbian, Montenegrin and Croatian Historiography on the Ottoman Empire
Türkiye Araştırmaları Literatür Dergisi, Cilt 8, Sayı 15, 2010, 697-714 Modern Serbian, Montenegrin and Croatian Historiography on the Ottoman Empire Ema MILJKOVIC* ALTHOUGH the first important studies dedicated to South-Slav history under the Ottoman rule and based on primary Ottoman sources were written before World War Two (some of them still being valid),1 the science of historiography in the former Yugoslavia began with serious research in this subject during 1950s. At that time, there were several centers for Ottoman studies, in Belgrade, Sarajevo and to a lesser extent, in Skopje. Podgorica and Zagreb have only developed interest in this field recently, as will be elaborated in this paper. A) Modern Serbian Historiography on the Ottoman Empire In spite of the fact that both Sarajevo and Belgrade were home to some very distinguished scholars in Ottoman history, and both cities had very influential Oriental studies programs at the university level, Sarajevo took the leading role as the primary academic center for Ottoman studies, which was due to a large part that the Institute of Oriental Studies (which has its own journal called Contributions for the Oriental Philology/Prilozi za orijentalnu filologiju) was located there. Belgrade had no such Institute or specialized center; within the Historical Institute of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts there was a special research unit, the members of which were experts on the Ottoman language and history.2 These experts * Prof., Ph. CHAPTER 4 The Reconstruction of Domestic Communities in the Branković Region of Serbia in 1455 Mirjana Bobić 1 Introduction After the death of Prince Dušan The Great (1308–1355),1 who had conquered great territories and thus created a most powerful medieval Serbian state * The present contribution is based on research carried out for the author’s MA thesis, “Teorijsko – konceptualni i metodološki problemi u istraživanju porodice i domaćinstva na osnovu turskog popisa Oblasti Brankovića iz 1455. Godine” [Theoretical-Conceptual and Methodological Problems in the Study of Family and Household on the Basis of the Turkish Census of the Branković Region from Year 1455], Unpublished MA dissertation, University of Belgrade, 1995. Several studies have appeared since then, which it has not been possible to take into account here. The author and editors are most grateful to one of the anonymous review- ers for drawing their attention to the following, which are included as indications of recent work: Ema Miljković, Смедеревски санџак 1476–1560: земља – насеља – становништво [The Sanjak of Smederevo 1476–1560: Land – Settlements – Population] (Belgrade, 2004); eadem, “Породица у пљеваљском крају у првом веку османске владавине” [Family in the Region of Pljevlja in the First Century of Ottoman Rule], Гласник Завичајног музеја (Пљевља), 2 (2001), 103–117; eadem, “Османске пописне књиге као извор за историју српског народа под османском влашћу (О постојећим критичким издањима и планираним пројектима)” [Ottoman Census Books as a Source for the History

TERRACE Price:149.900€ SERBIA Serbia- officially the Republic of Serbia is a country situated at the crossroads of Central and Southeast Europe in the southern Pannonian Plain and the central Balkans. The sovereign state borders Hungary to the north, Romania to the northeast, Bulgaria to the southeast, Macedonia to the south, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro to the southwest. The country claims a border with Albania through the disputed territory of Kosovo. Serbia numbers around 7 million residents. Its capital, Belgrade, ranks among the oldest and largest cities in southeastern Europe. Inhabited since the Paleolithic Age, the Slavic migrations to the Balkans in the 6th century established several sovereign states in the early Middle Ages which at times nominally recognized Byzantine, Frankish and Hungarian overrule. The Serbian Kingdom obtained recognition by the Vatican and Constantinople in 1217, reaching its peak in 1346 as a relatively short-lived Serbian Empire. By the mid-16th century, the entire modern-day Serbia was annexed by the Ottomans, at times interrupted by the Habsburg Empire, which started expanding towards Central Serbia from the end of the 17th century, while maintaining a foothold in modern-day Vojvodina. Serbia is a member of the UN, CoE, OSCE, PfP, BSEC, CEFTA and it is acceding to the WTO. Since 2014 the country has been negotiating its EU accession with perspective of joining the European Union by 2025 and is the only country in the current enlargement agenda which is designated as "free" by Freedom House.
