LAHARJORI STONE DEPOSIT CHAPTER- 3 GEOLOGY, EXPLORATION & RESERVE 3.0 Physiography: The maximum elevation is at 296 m and the minimum elevation is at 281 m above MSL. In general the area shows a general slope from north to south. The land surface is rugged and uneven ranging from flat lands to almost steep slopes. 3.1 Regional Geology Geologically the district is mainly covered by Chotanagpur granite gneiss of Archean age with patches of alluvium, sandstone and shale of Gondawana formations. The district contains several clusters of rocky hills covered with forest, but series of long ridges with intervening depressions. Most of the rolling uplands are cultivated by highland crops. The average elevation of the district is 247 m above msl, However hill ranges like Phuljari (750 m), Teror (670 m) and Degaria (575 m) break the monotony of the landscape. The general slope of the district is from North West to south east. Geologically the district is mainly covered by chhotanagpur granite gneiss of Archean age with paches of alluvium, sandstone and shale of Gondawana formations. Important rivers flowing in the district are the Ajay, the Paltro etc. These rivers gather a large number of tributaries which form the land scape full of Tanrs and Dons. The rock type exposed in the region consist of a series of a meta sediment like mica schist, quartz schist, quartzite, garnetiferous mica gneiss, feldspathic mica gneiss intruded by granite plutons, amphibolites, dolerites, pegmatite’s and quartz veins. Large-scale migmatisation and feldspathisation is responsible for conversion of mica schist to mica- gneiss. The generalized geological succession of these rock types occurring in area is as follows: Statigraphic Succession 4 MINING CONSULTANT: TAPAN KUMAR CHAKRAVARTY REGN. The Archeans comprise granite gneiss, crystalline limestone, calc silicate and schist. They have been intruded by pegmatite and quartz vein. The Gondwana Formation lies unconformably over the Archeans. The geological succession of the area is as follows: Recent Soil ---------------------------------------UN-CONFORMITY--------------------------- ARCHEAN Chotanagpur Granite Gneiss Pegmatite/ Quartz Veins, dolerite 3.3.
