Loved this bookBy Mary Ellen AngstLoved this book. As Yankee fans, we all know the great stories of the championship years but Jorge gives us a deeper look into his role, the clubhouse and the meaning of team. His story of growing up with a father who taught him to be a man and a mother to balance it all out is touching. Jorge's story takes you on a journey from boyhood to the major leagues and beyond. It also tugs and your heart strings as you learn what he and Laura went through with their beautiful son. If you love the Yankees and appreciate the men who have guarded home plate, this book is for you.4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Great BookBy JimandFran DiGiovannaGreat book about a great Yankee. Jorge did a great job in this book of not only describing what it took to become a Yankee but also the drive and dedication it took to win 5 World Series Rings. His inside stories about his family and the overcoming of difficult times gave the book even more depth. It was sad to read about the lack of respect that some individuals in theYankee Organization showed to this "Warrior" during his final year in baseball. The "Core Four" we're all amazing players.I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The legendary New York Yankee catcher tells the incredible story of his personal journey, offering an unexpected, behind-the-plate view of his career, his past, and the father-son bond that fueled his love of the game. For seventeen seasons, the name Jorge Posada was synonymous with New York Yankees baseball. A fixture behind home plate throughout the Yankees biggest successes, Jorge became the Yankees' star catcher almost immediately upon his arrival, and in the years that followed, his accomplishments, work ethic, and leadership established him as one of the greatest Yankees ever to put on the uniform. Now, in this long-awaited memoir, Jorge Posada details his journey to home plate, sharing a remarkable, generational account of his journey from the ball fields of Puerto Rico to the House that Ruth built. Offering a view from behind the mask unlike any other, Jorge discusses the key moments and plays that shaped teams and forged a legacy that came to define Yankee baseball for a generation. With pitch-by-pitch recall, Jorge looks back across the years, explaining howmdash;as part of the Core Four alongside Derek Jeter, Andy Pettitte, and Mariano Riveramdash;he helped to reestablish the Yankees as a dynasty and win five World Series.Going beyond his all-star career, Jorge also shares his life in full for the first time, examining how his remarkable journey to the big leagues began in the most unexpected of ways. Digging into his cultural roots in Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and Cuba, Jorge illuminates three generations of cherished father-son relationships that have made him the man he is today. At the center is the deep bond he shares with his father and namesake, Jorge Sr, who escaped Cuba and would eventually mold his son to be a ball player, honing his talent and instilling in him the drive necessary to fulfill his childhood dream of playing in the Bronx.Complete with sixteen pages of color photographs, this touching and earnest memoir is a testament to hard work and a celebration of the generational gift of baseball between fathers and sons. ldquo;A must-read for any Yankees fan, especially lovers of the Core Four.rdquo; (Library Journal)From the Back CoverThe legendary New York Yankees catcher tells the incredible storynbsp; of his personal journeyFor seventeen seasons, the name Jorge Posada was synonymous with New York Yankees baseball. • Replacing Russell Martin
Replacing Russell Martin Russell Martin, the New York Yankees' catcher during the last two years, left the Yankees to sign as a free agent with the Pittsburgh Pirates. To the ears of most Yankee fans, this sounds incongruous. The Pirates are a team from whom the Yankees sign free agents, not a team that signs away valuable Yankee players. When people think of great Yankee traditions, they often think of centerfield, where three Hall of Famers, albeit one (Earle Combs) who is a borderline case, played that position for most of the years from the mid-1920s through the mid-1960s, and where another great player, Bernie Williams, played for much of the Yankees' latest run of greatness. However, the Yankee tradition at catcher has also been very strong. Hall of Famers Bill Dickey and Yogi Berra held that position down for most of the 30s-50s, while other great players like Elston Howard, Thurman Munson and Jorge Posada have been integral parts of many great Yankee teams. Martin obviously is not part of that tradition, but he is a useful player who will not be easy to replace. Martin is not a great all around player. He is a lifetime .260 hitter who has not even managed to hit that well since 2008. Martin draws most of his value from being able to do two things well, play defense and hit for power. During his two years with the Yankees he has hit 39 home runs, and did solid work behind the plate. He has also drew 103 walks during his two years in pinstripes, which has also bolstered his offensive contributions.

The Boston Red Sox Friday, April 17, 2020 * The Boston Globe Are baseball players facing further salary reductions? Alex Speier Baseball players know they won’t be receiving their full salaries in 2020. An agreement governing the financial relationship between MLB and the Players Association, reached in late March, stipulated that salaries would be adjusted to reflect the percentage of the regular season that was played — with the possibility there would be no games in 2020 due to the shutdown forced by the COVID-19 pandemic. But even if there is a season, could further player salary reductions follow? The possibility was introduced by New York’s Governor, Andrew Cuomo, who in an interview with CNN relayed that Mets COO Jeff Wilpon had suggested that owners might see further salary concessions by players if a season is played in empty ballparks. “Apparently, Major League Baseball would have to make a deal with the players because if you have no one in the stands then the numbers are going to change, right?” Cuomo said. “The economics are going to change.” A major league source said that owners had not broached the topic of potential salary reductions with the MLB Players Association, A major league source said owners had not broached the topic with the Players Association, but the possibility is unsurprisingly being disputed. MLB believes the agreement was premised on the possibility of games taking place in stadiums with fans, and believes the document codifying the agreement is clear on the point. The MLBPA, however, feels the sides already reached an understanding about the financial rules that would govern a season.

  • Ex-N.Y. Yankees: Our Advisors Stole Millions
Updated Thursday, January 15, 2015 as of 11:15 AM ET Ex-N.Y. Yankees: Our Advisors Stole Millions Former New York Yankees catcher Jorge Posada and ex-pitcher Jose Contreras claim two financial advisors led them into a series of bad investments, including a real estate deal and a hedge fund that cost Posada millions. Their attorney, New York-based Barry Lax, says the two ballplayers are the latest professional athletes abused by predatory financial advisors. "I've seen it before too many times," says Lax, who has represented other athletes, including a former Boston Red Sox catcher who was found to have been financially hurt by a Merrill Lynch team. "They are just victims of fraud, taken advantage of at every turn. It is a cautionary tale." EX-MERRILL ADVISORS The two advisors named in Posada's October complaint filed in Miami-Dade County Court -- Juan Carlos Collar and Anthony Fernandez -- were with Merrill Lynch when they first met the young Yankees catcher at the beginning of his career. "They had a reputab.e name behind them," Lax says. When Collar and Fernandez left Merrill in the mid-2000s to start their own RIA, Quantum Family Office Group, Lax says Posada and Contreras stayed with the advisors, whose practice also served other Latino athletes. (An out-of-date Form ADV filed in 2012 said the group managed roughly $75 million in assets, with high-net worth individuals making up more than 75% of the firm's clients.) A Florida attorney representing Collar and Fernandez, Gustavo Lamelas, did not return calls for comment.

STILL FOOLIN’ ’EM 235 Celebrate the fact that you now have so many candles on your cake, Al Gore thinks you are the cause of global warming. And celebrate your mother, just like I celebrate mine. Sixty- fi ve years ago, that sainted woman screamingly launched me into the world in a thirty-minute procedure she always lik- ened to pooping a pumpkin. Honestly, my mom always made me feel special on my birth- day, March 14. When I was a young boy, she used to wake me up at the exact time I was born: 7:36 A.M. As I grew older and moved out of the house, it became the phone call at 7:36 A.M. Even after I got married and had kids of my own, I always woke up looking forward to her call— it started the day off on the right foot. I put that tradition into City Slickers, with Jayne Meadows’s voice play- ing my mom on the other end of the line. Mom’s been gone since 2001, but come March 14, I still get up early and look at the alarm clock, and at 7:36, in my mind I hear the phone ring. Her call always ended with her saying, “Do something special.” I didn’t even mind that she called collect. The most special thing I ever did on my birthday was when my life’s dream came true: I got to play for the New York Yan- kees. In 2007, I was in Costa Rica for Christmas vacation and could feel my birthday looming.
