Bobby Planutis is one of the many stars of HA boys' basketball. He averages near 20 points per game and leads the team in many other stat categories. Bobby Planutis has proven key in the success of the Cougar boys. On the court, however, it isn’t just his show. Play- ers such as Dante Biasi, Michael “Jelly” Cusatis, Josh Samec, Jeff “Gator” Planutis, Jacob Diaz, and freshman Damir Faison also have shown to do more than the job they need to. The boys' team is like a well-oiled machine. Blowing teams out by 20 points a game is more than enough proof that Cougar boys come ready to play. Holt All rights reserved ABSTRACT Get Crunk! The Performative Resistance of Atlanta Hip-Hop Party Music Kevin C. Holt This dissertation offers an aesthetic and historical overview of crunk, a hip- hop subgenre that took form in Atlanta, Georgia during the late 1990s. Get Crunk! is an ethnography that draws heavily on methodologies from African-American studies, musicological analysis, and performance studies in order to discuss crunk as a performed response to the policing of black youth in public space in the 1990s. Crunk is a subgenre of hip-hop that emanated from party circuits in the American southeast during the 1990s, characterized by the prevalence of repeating chanted phrases, harmonically sparse beats, and moderate tempi. The music is often accompanied by images that convey psychic pain, i.e. contortions of the body and face, and a moshing dance style in which participants thrash against one another in spontaneously formed epicenters while chanting along with the music. Crunk’s ascension to prominence coincided with a moment in Atlanta’s history during which inhabitants worked diligently to redefine Atlanta for various political purposes. Some hoped to recast the city as a cosmopolitan tourist destination for the approaching new millennium, while others sought to recreate the city as a beacon of Southern gentility, an articulation of the city’s mythologized pre-Civil War existence; both of these positions impacted Atlanta’s growing hip-hop community, which had the twins goals of drawing in black youth tourism and creating and marketing an easily identifiable Southern style of hip-hop for mainstream consumption; the result was crunk.

Johnson Doctor of Philosophy in Education University of California, Berkeley Professor Zeus Leonardo, Chair This audience research study explores how 1990s Black sitcoms such as Martin, A Different World, Living Single, Moesha, and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air serve as a form of heritage for Black millennials. To better understand this phenomenon, I conducted semi-structured, in-depth interviews and focus groups with 26 Black undergraduate students at a large, public, research university in the western part of the United States. In addition to interviews and focus groups, I performed textual analyses of sitcom episodes as well as the various popular texts produced in response to the shows. My analysis reveals how Black millennials sample ideas about race, gender, and class from 1990s Black sitcoms as well as how they critique the continued circulation of the texts in Black popular culture. Identifying social mobility as a central theme in most 1990s Black sitcoms, participants used the shows to help shape their professional, social, and educational aspirations. Specifically, participants stated that the shows helped them imagine themselves as college students who would go on to pursue careers with high-earning potential, while also framing their expectations of the romantic and platonic relationships necessary to achieve upward mobility.

In a call to action, BMI provided a letter, one for songwriters and one for publishers, to which their signatures could be added. The response was overwhelming. BMI received nearly 13,000 signatures from writers, composers and publishers of all genres of music, at all levels in their careers. Some of the industry's most well- known songwriters added their names, including Stephen Stills, Cynthia Weil, Steve Cropper, Ester Dean, Dean Pitchford, Congressman John Hall, Trini Lopez, John Cafferty, Gunnar Nelson, Lori McKenna, Shannon Rubicam and Don Brewer, among many others.
