Houston jumped out to a 4-0 lead with four runs in the top of the first. Aaron Takacs and Alvaro Gonzalez had back-to-back RBI hits. Yelier Peguero chipped in an RBI groundout, while the fourth run scored on a wild pitch. Hudson Bilodeau’s RBI double in the top of the second made it 5-0. The Goldeyes chipped away on a Wes Darvill RBI double in the second and a Kyle Martin RBI single in the third. Houston scored an unearned run in the top of the sixth to re-extend the lead to 6-2. Martin hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth, and the Goldeyes brought the tying run to the plate, but Apollos’ reliever Keisy Portorreal retired all five batters to face him over the eighth and ninth to earn the save. Eduard Reyes started for the Goldeyes and took the loss, allowing four earned runs on three hits in 1.0 inning. Reyes walked two and struck out one. Dylan Burns allowed one earned run in 2.2 relief innings in his professional debut. ALL-TIME AGAINST THE MONARCHS: The Winnipeg Goldeyes are 83-62 all-time against the Kansas City Monarchs, including a 43-28 record in home games, and an 0-0 record at The Ballpark at Jackson. Known as the Kansas City T-Bones from 2003-20, the franchise rebranded as the Monarchs this past winter to honour the legendary Negro Leagues team. Kansas City is home to the Negro Leagues Hall of Fame, and the original version of the club was the longest tenured club in Negro Leagues history. In addition to winning 12 championships, the Monarchs were once home to baseball Hall of Famers Jackie Robinson, Satchel Paige, and Cool Papa Bell. The Monarchs joined the American Association as the T-Bones along with the Goldeyes, Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks, and Gary SouthShore RailCats in 2011. The franchise dates back to the origins of the Northern League in 1993 when the club played as the Duluth-Superior Dukes. The Dukes moved to Kansas City and brand new Legends Field (then known as CommunityAmerica Ballpark) in 2003. Kansas City won its first championship in 2008, defeating the Gary SouthShore RailCats in the Northern League Championship Series. In 2018, the T-Bones captured their first American Association championship, taking down the league’s two division winners in Sioux City and St. Paul. Joe Calfapietra enters his fifth year and fourth season as Monarch’s manager after leading the Can-Am League’s New Jersey Jackals for 14 seasons. Calfapietra led the Jackals to 10 postseason appearances during his 14 years at the helm. Kansas City’s playoff berth in 2018 was their first since the final year of the Northern League in 2010. Entering 2021, the Monarchs/T-Bones have won 177 games in three played seasons under Calfapietra. Former Kansas City Royals’ legend Frank White returns as first base coach. White was an integral member of the Royals’ 1985 World Series championship team, and won eight Gold Gloves at second base during his 18 years in the Major Leagues. The Monarchs did not participate in the 2020 American Association season as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. SERIES MATCHUP: The Winnipeg Goldeyes are 28-30, in fourth place in the American Association North Division, and 10.0 games behind the Milwaukee Milkmen. The Goldeyes just won two of three from the Houston Apollos at The Ballpark at Jackson. The Goldeyes are fourth in the American Association in hitting (.283), 10 th in pitching (6.01), and seventh in fielding (.978). The Kansas City Monarchs are 36-20, in first place in the South Division, and 2.5 games ahead of the Cleburne Railroaders. The Monarchs just won two of three from the Lincoln Saltdogs at Haymarket Park. The Monarchs are fifth in the league in batting (.278), eighth in pitching (4.82), and tied for fourth in defence (.980). This is the second of two head-to- head series this season between Winnipeg and Kansas City. The Goldeyes were 4-2 against the T-Bones in 2019. TONIGHT’S STARTERS: The Goldeyes go with right- PROJECTED UPCOMING PITCHING MATCHUPS hander Pete Perez who is 3-1 with a 5.84 ERA in six starts 7/24 vs. KCM: RHP Joey Gonzalez (2-5, 5.81) vs. RHP Jose Taveras (1-1, 5.75) and five relief appearances this season. Perez picked up 7/25 vs. KCM: TBA vs. RHP Jameson McGrane (3-1, 4.14) the win at Fargo-Moorhead on Sunday, allowing two earned runs on five hits in 5.2 innings. Perez walked two and struck out four. Prior to this season, Perez last pitched in 2019 for the Texas AirHogs where he was 2-2 with a 2.51 ERA in 23 relief appearances. Perez walked 10 and struck out 30 over 32.1 innings pitched. Perez was undrafted out of Tarleton State University (Stephenville, Texas) following his senior season in 2013 and signed with the Frontier League’s Southern Illinois Miners. After posting a 3.03 ERA in 38.2 innings for the Miners, Perez had his contract purchased by the Atlanta Braves. Perez is in his seventh season of professional baseball, and is 14-18 lifetime with 28 saves and a 4.16 ERA in 196 appearances, 11 of them as a starting pitcher. Perez is 0-1 with a 3.38 ERA in five career relief appearances against Kansas City. Perez is 1-1 with a 4.50 ERA in three starts and two relief appearances in his career at The Ballpark at Jackson. The Monarchs go with right-hander Nick Travieso who is 5-6 with a 5.64 ERA in 11 starts and one relief appearance this season. Travieso picked up the win vs. Kane County last Saturday, allowing two earned runs on five hits in 6.0 innings. Travieso walked three and struck out two. Prior to this season, Travieso last pitched in 2019 for the Rookie Pioneer League’s Billings Mustangs (Cincinnati Reds) where he was 0-1 with a 9.00 ERA in three relief appearances. Travieso was drafted by the Reds in the first round (14 th overall) in 2012, and reached the Double-A level in 2016. Baseball America ranked Travieso in the Reds’ Top-10 prospects four straight years from 2013-16. Travieso is in his seventh season of professional baseball, and is 37-31 lifetime with a 3.81 ERA in 108 appearances, 104 of them as a starting pitcher. Tonight will be Travieso’s first career appearance against Winnipeg. Travieso is 0-0 with a 12.00 ERA in one career start at The Ballpark at Jackson. GOLDEYES WILL RETURN TO WINNIPEG: On Thursday, the Winnipeg Goldeyes announced they will return to Shaw Park in Winnipeg beginning August 3 rd . 20 games at Shaw Park have now been added to the Goldeyes’ remaining schedule. The Goldeyes last played at home on September 2 nd , 2019 vs. Sioux Falls. TENNESSEE BOUND: Due to the ongoing closure of the Canada/US border, the Winnipeg Goldeyes have partnered with the Jackson Generals professional baseball club to host Winnipeg at The Ballpark at Jackson to begin the 2021 season. The Generals were a Double-A Southern League affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, Seattle Mariners, and Arizona Diamondbacks from 1998-2019. The franchise hosted the Southern League All-Star Game on two occasions, and won four Southern League championships. The Generals are located in Jackson, Tennessee, which is 208 kilometres southwest of Nashville and 140 kilometres northeast of Memphis. GOLDEYES ADD ROOKIE BURNS: The Winnipeg Goldeyes signed rookie right-handed pitcher Dylan Burns on Thursday. Burns recently completed his college career at the University of South Florida. Burns was 5-5 with a 4.32 ERA in 10 starts and eight relief appearances as a senior this past spring, and helped the Bulls reach the NCAA regionals. GOLDEYES SIGN CANADIAN ROOKIE BOURASSA: The Winnipeg Goldeyes signed right-handed pitcher Landen Bourassa on Wednesday. Bourassa just finished his college career at the University of San Francisco where he was 7-4 with a 2.88 ERA in 15 starts as a sixth-year senior. The Lethbridge, Alberta native had a combined 2.93 ERA for the Dons from 2018-21, and also pitched two seasons at Lane Community College in Eugene, Oregon. EXTRA, EXTRA: Through 58 games, the Winnipeg Goldeyes lead the American Association in doubles (131), and rank second in triples (19). The Goldeyes are on pace for 226 doubles and 33 triples. The franchise records in those categories are 206 doubles in 2011 and 30 triples in 1999. STEADY PRESENCE: Goldeyes’ infielder Raul Navarro had a career-high 18-game hitting streak end on July 16 th at Fargo-Moorhead. Navarro has also had streaks of nine and 14 games this season. Navarro has hit safely in 48 of 58 games this season, and has reached with a hit, walk, or hit by pitch in 53 of them. RUN PRODUCER: Goldeyes’ first baseman Kyle Martin is tied for third in the American Association with 64 RBI.
