NCAA TOURNAMENT HISTORY UCLA has made 22 NCAA Tournament appearances, including 11 in the last 15 seasons. The Bruins advanced to the College World Series three times in a four-year span (2010, 2012 and 2013), capturing the NCAA Championship in 2013. That season’s trip to Omaha, Neb., marked UCLA’s fifth appearance at the College World Series. UCLA’s other CWS appearances came in 1969, 1997, 2010 and 2012. As head coach, John Savage has led UCLA to the postseason in 10 of 14 seasons. He is the program’s only head coach to have led UCLA to postseason appearances in four consecutive seasons (2010-13) and to the NCAA Championship (2013). He coached the Bruins to the Super Regionals in 2007, 2010, 2012 and 2013. UCLA also hosted the NCAA Los Angeles Regional (at Jackie Robinson Stadium) in five of six seasons (2010-2013, 2015). In addition, the Bruins hosted the NCAA Super Regional round in 2010 and 2012. Prior to 2010, UCLA had not hosted postseason games since 1986. Former head coach Gary Adams made 11 trips to the NCAA Tournament, including the Bruins’ 1997 appearance at the College World Series. In six games at the 1997 NCAA Midwest Regional (at Oklahoma State), the Bruins outscored their opposition, 72-24. UCLA closed the six-game stretch with five victories, routing host Oklahoma State 14-2 and 22-2 on the same day. Eric Valent earned Tournament MVP honors after blasting six home runs, while Nick Theodorou batted .667, collecting 16 hits in 24 at-bats. Cincinnati Reds Press Clippings March 19, 2016 THIS DAY IN REDS HISTORY 2014 - A Cactus League game between the Reds and Royals is abruptly stopped in the 6th inning when Reds closer Aroldis Chapman is struck in the face by a line drive off the bat of Salvador Perez. Chapman is taken off the field on a stretcher, with fractures above his eye and in his nose, as well as multiple lacerations. The two managers then elect not to continue play, with the blessing of home plate umpire Chris Guccione. MLB.COM Adam Duvall, Tyler Holt bookend Reds' win By Adam McCalvy / MLB.com | @AdamMcCalvy | March 18th, 2016 + 166 COMMENTS PHOENIX -- Adam Duvall had three hits for the Reds, including a long, two-run home run, and Chris Carter hit his third homer for the Brewers as the teams battled back and forth Friday at Maryvale Baseball Park. The Reds ultimately prevailed, 7-6. Carter hit a solo home run in the fourth inning, Kirk Nieuwenhuis hit a tying triple in the fifth and Rymer Liriano lifted a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the sixth as part of a middle-inning comeback for the Brewers, who had won four of their previous five games. But the Reds quickly tied the game at 5 in the seventh inning on Jake Cave's two-out single. Duvall, a candidate for Cincinnati's left field vacancy who manned third base in this game, homered to cap the Reds' three-run first inning. Joey Votto also delivered an RBI single in the inning, but all three runs were unearned against Brewers starter Chase Anderson because of an error charged to left fielder Ryan Braun.

  • Jewish Baseball by Justice Robert E
Jewish Baseball by Justice Robert E. Gordon The Jewish players in the major leagues are: 1. Ryan Braun, age 34, Milwaukee Brewers outfielder in a 12-year career. Ryan’s father was born in Israel and Ryan became the 24th player to combine 300-plus homers with 200-plus stolen bases. Ryan will eclipse Hank Greenberg’s 331 homeruns this year. He was nine short at the start of the year. 2. Alex Bregman, age 24, Houston Astros third-baseman, was named Most Valuable Player in the American League in the All-Star Game in 2018, and finished 5th for the American League Most Valuable Player Award. Alex was a first-round draft pick. 3. Richard Bleier, age 30, is a left-handed pitcher for the Baltimore Orioles in his third big-league season, and had a 1.93 ERA last year. He had season-ending surgery and is on the DL. 4. Max Fried, age 24, is a left-handed pitcher for the Atlanta Braves, and is a promising star with a low ERA and may be one of the best relief pitchers in baseball. Max is a former first-round draft pick. 5. Ty Kelly, age 29, was a star for Team Israel, but this infielder and outfielder has yet to show such promise for the New York Mets. 6. Ian Kinsler, age 36, had a terrific major-league career as a great second-baseman, but this should be his last year in the majors with the San Diego Padres. 7. Ryan Lavarnway, age 30, a catcher, was a star on Team Israel, but has yet shown such promise for the Pittsburgh Pirates and now with the New York Yankees.

Cincinnati Reds Press Clippings March 19, 2018 THIS DAY IN REDS HISTORY 1996-Hamilton County voters overwhelming approve a one-half cent sales tax increase to finance new stadiums for the Reds and Bengals MLB.COM Quackenbush making case to join Reds roster By Mark Sheldon MLB.com @m_sheldon Mar. 18th, 2018 GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- A non-roster reliever, right-hander Kevin Quackenbush has quietly done at Spring Training exactly what a pitcher trying to earn a job should do: put up zeros. In seven appearances, Quackenbush has allowed no earned runs with one unearned run, five hits, three walks and 10 strikeouts. He struck out the side with one walk in Saturday's 5-4 win over the Giants. "I'm still here. It's still exciting," Quackenbush said on Sunday. Quackenbush, 29, is seeking one of the final bullpen spots and is among several contenders still left in camp. Unlike fellow competitors such as Austin Brice, Kevin Shackelford or Zack Weiss, the Reds will have the added hoop of trying to find room for Quackenbush on the 40-man roster before he goes on the 25-man active roster. There are currently two openings. After he had four big league seasons with the Padres, Cincinnati signed Quackenbush to a Minor League deal in October and invited him to camp. "Quackenbush has had a nice spring," Reds manager Bryan Price said. "He's been the off-the-radar guy that has really pitched very well. He's extremely prepared, and he has great confidence in his fastball for a guy who has a really good curveball and isn't really overpowering as far as the sheer velocity numbers, but he's a guy that pitches with that elevated fastball extremely well.
