The pilgrims who sailed to this country aboard the Mayflower were originally members of the English Separatist Church. The Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Mouth Rock on December 11, 1620. Their first winter was devastating. At the beginning of the following fall, they had lost 46 of the original 102 people who sailed on the Mayflower. The harvest of 1621 was an abundant one. The remaining colonists decided to celebrate with a feast, and they invited Indians who helped the Pilgrims survive their first year. The feast was more of a traditional English harvest festival than a true thanksgiving observance, and it lasted three days.

 Only 50 of the 102 original Pilgrims survived the first year at Plymouth settlement.  History states that only five women Pilgrims survived the first year at Plymouth settlement and they were the first ones to cook and prepare the first meager celebration meal, in 1621  The Pilgrims at their first dinner with only spoons and knife.  The mayflower was not built to transport people. Originally it was built to be a wine transport ship.

A note from Kenny

Not a day goes by when I don’t see an example of the Centers Health Care sprit. Sometimes it’s a CNA going the extra mile for one of our residents, or someone from the kitchen staff going out of their way to make something special. But no matter who is expressing it or how, I’m always amazed at the spirit of our employees. This past weekend, I learned something else – the families of our employees all have that exact same sense of spirit. And I saw it happen on a cold, windy, rainy Sunday afternoon.

Our annual Family Fun Day this was going to be the biggest one ever. We had more carnival rides, a bigger petting zoo and more ponies; our NASCAR team was on hand for photos and to give everyone a chance to sit at the wheel of a championship racer; the hotdog, popcorn and cotton candy wagons were primed to go all day; and the most important business and political leaders in the area were all planning to join us. And of course, there were the 5K and 10K races. All that and more. Unfortunately, the weather was the only thing that didn’t cooperate. The forecast for clouds changing to partial sunshine, but what we got were gray skies, a cold, steady rain, and a howling wind. But through it all, over 1,000 Centers employees and their families, some who traveled more than 400 miles to be there, kept their spirits high and never skipped a beat. The races went off as planned, the caterer grilled thousands of hamburgers and hot dogs and we gathered under the shelter of tents while the wind deflated the carnival rides. Thousands of dollars in Raffle prizes brought cheers from the crowd and the pumpkin contest featured magnificent entries from nearly every facility. I was awed once again by the spirit of our team, and want to thank everyone for their contribution, to family fun day, to Centers Health Care, and to the lives of those we care for every day. That’s the true spirit of Heart Health Home.

Kenny Rozenberg, CEO

Nothing Dampens our Spirit! Family Fun Day 2016 was memorable for lots of reasons, not the least of which were the wind and the rain.

On October 9, nearly 1,200 people gathered at Rockland Lake State Park for a very special edition of our annual Family Fun Day. This year, our theme was welcoming three new facilities to the Centers Health Care family as we said to three facilities who are poised to become our newest members of the family. The soon-to-be Monsey Center, Nanuet Center and Haverstraw Center will make Centers Health Care the largest and most complete post-acute health care continuum in Rockland County.

During the festivities, more than 500 Centers employees ran in one of our two charity races – a 5K or a 10K - which have become a Centers tradition. This year’s charities were the Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation and Nyack Hospital and each group was presented with a $7,500 donation by Kenny Rozenberg, CEO of Centers Health Care. Leading the pack of runners in the 10K was Izzy Pupko from Boro Park Center with a fastest time in all age groups of 44 minutes, 20 seconds. Our own Kenny Rozenberg donned running shoes for the 10K as well and finished in the top 15. In the 5k, Roman Kravchenko from Boro Park Center impressed with a first place time of 18 minutes, 16 seconds. First finisher among the women was Mary Hallett from Fulton Center, with a time of 21:25. Congratulations to everyone who participated.

Ed Day, County Executive of Rockland County and Ken Zebrowski, New York State Assemblyman, both issued official Proclamations naming October 9th as Centers Health Care Day in Rockland County. November 2016 7

Despite the many challenges, our caterers served over 1,000 hotdogs, hundreds and hundreds of hamburgers, and hundreds of pounds of sides and salads while party-goers kept dry under the tents. High winds and rain grounded the carnival rides and kept the photo booths under wraps, but the much anticipated pumpkin carving contest brought out everyone’s creative best. It was clearly a very difficult choice, but first place honors went to the future Nanuet Center (currently Northern Manor), followed by Corning Center with a strong second place challenge and Warren Center taking the third place ribbon. But the biggest cheers of the day came in the early afternoon with the awarding of the raffle prizes. There were 60” plasma televisions and professional grade B-B-G grills, mountain bikes for adults and kids, gift certificates, and a host of electronic devices.

As the tents came down and the busses left the parking lot, planning for 2017 was just getting started. Next year, we’re looking forward to two things – even more of our great employees and their families attending, and a warm, sunny day! See you next year.
