That’s why we are calling on you to respect previous commitments made regarding Downsview Park's land. Instead of breaking up this unique urban park and selling it off, Downsview Park needs federal protection and support. The local community expects nothing less from the federal government than the honouring of previous commitments: protecting at least 50% of the park and the keeping all proceeds from land sales local to sustain Downsview Park. Instead, the federal government is reducing transparency and accountability by abolishing the Downsview Park Inc. crown corporation and handing the land and management of the park to the Canada Lands Corporation. We don't believe the federal government is set up to run a Toronto park. Neither is it set up to manage community relationships with local residents. On behalf of the Downsview residents, we have three demands: 1. Stop the land sale of Downsview Park. 2. Any revenue from the leasing or land sale from previous agreements be directed back to the maintenance and the operation of the Downsview Park. 3. Create an arms-length body composed of local residents groups, community representatives including park users, local elected representatives (such as City Councillors) to deal with the daily operation, financial management and maintenance of the Park. We trust that you will make the right decisions – as the Federal government owes it to the local community and the citizens of Toronto present and future. The right-wing newspapers were: Rivolta ideale (Ideal Revolt), Tradizione (Tradition), // faro (the Lighthouse or Beacon), and Occidente (the West or Western civilization). Reading these newspapers today, one gets the impression that they were written in a remote era. The socio-political reality that generated these publications has been radically altered on both sides of the ocean. As a con- sequence of the recent disintegration of the communist system, which ended over seventy years of East/West confrontational tension, in Italy the party system to which these newspapers refer no longer exists. Parties bear- ing new names and advancing new policies have replaced the older ones, marking what is now considered the passage from the first to the second Republic- As a result, the articles on, or about, Italian politics published ^ I would like to thank several people who helped in different ways with this paper. This places blame on the company for the 2008 Propane Explosion that incinerated Parminder "Rocky" Singh Saini, and killed veteran firefighter Robert Leek, cost millions and caused heartache and distress to members of my community, many who lost their homes and were displaced. In 2010, the Ontario Fire Marshall found that the cause for the blast was a "truck to truck" propane transfer that was not only illegal but sadly also not an uncommon method of propane exchange at the Sunrise facility. While the blame for the immediate workplace hazards, short-cuts, woefully inadequate training and overall dangerous culture of negligence can be placed on Sunrise Propane Energy Group Inc., the responsibility for preventive measures existed squarely with the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) who is the arms-length industry self-regulator tasked with propane oversight. Justice Leslie Chapin's decision echoed condemnation of the TSSA when she pointed out how it failed to substantively act despite knowing about the illegal transfers occurring at this facility as late as 2007. The TSSA did not even have an up-to-date list of propane facilities in the Greater Toronto Area at the time of the 2008 blast -- a fact that should be a harbinger of its potential negligence in its other regulatory areas.

Maria Augimeri Is the City of Toronto Councillor for York Centre - Ward 9
Maria Augimeri is the City of Toronto Councillor for York Centre - Ward 9. Councillor Augimeri was first elected in 1982 as a School Trustee and was subsequently elected to the City of North York Council in 1985. She has continued to represent the area of Downsview at the municipal level, acting as an advocate for her residents and championing key local issues. Councillor Augimeri is committed to the revitalization of Downsview, results which can be seen throughout the Ward 9 area. The revitalization of major road ways and the planting of hundreds of trees has improved the appearance of major arteries in the community. At the corner of Keele and Wilson, the Downsview Memorial Parkette has been redesigned to act as a welcoming oasis into the neighbourhood. Councillor Augimeri states that, "revitalizing and beautifying the Downsview area is my priority and I will use all of the municipal planning tools to do just that". In this spirit Councillor Augimeri forged ahead to have Wilson Avenue chosen as the one "Avenue" of the North York District to be studied for improvement. As a result, a detailed Streetscape Plan with a new Zoning By-law will facilitate real and positive change for the local area. Reaching out to residents, Councillor Augimeri has operated a Community Service Office for the past 22 years, where she meets with her constituents on a one-on-one basis. She has also held annual Property Tax and Assessment Clinics to inform local residents and businesses of their rights under the law. Councillor Augimeri is committed to City wide initiatives, evidenced by her success in brokering agreements between the City of Toronto and the Toronto Catholic District School Board to maximize community access to space in schools and community centres.

This Motion has been added to the agenda and is before Council for debate. Recommendations Councillor Maria Augimeri, seconded by Mayor John Tory, recommends that: 1. City Council direct the City Manager and Planning staff to pursue the transfer of Federal lands currently designated in the "Downsview Area Secondary Plan" as the "William Baker District" located at the north-east quadrant of Sheppard Avenue West and Keele Street to the City of Toronto for the purpose of establishing this area as municipal park land. Summary William Baker was a portion of land expropriated from local farmers in order to expand the Downsview military operation and airport runway to aid in the war effort. Upon closing of the military base at Downsview in 1994, the Government of Canada designated that the 572 acres of Federal land at Downsview Park was to "be held in perpetuity and in trust primarily as a unique urban recreational green space for the enjoyment of future generations.” Since this proclamation, various federal policy pronouncements and designs were established for Downsview Park but none came to fruition until 2008 when the government began to sell parcels of Downsview Park for housing developments, in contrast to the 1994 policy promise to hold the lands "in trust" as a "unique urban recreational green space".
