NHESP is responsible for the conservation and protection of hundreds of species that are not hunted, fished, trapped, or commercially harvested in the state. The Program's highest priority is protecting the 176 species of vertebrate and invertebrate animals and 259 species of native plants that are officially listed as Endangered, Threatened or of Special Concern in Massachusetts. Endangered species conservation in Massachusetts depends on you! A major source of funding for the protection of rare and endangered species comes from voluntary donations on state income tax forms. Contributions go to the Natural Heritage & Endangered Species Fund, which provides a portion of the operating budget for the Natural Heritage & Endangered Species Program. Onosma malkarmayorum TEPPNER, spec, nova, is a low suffrutex with well de- veloped sterile shoots at flowering time. The asterotrichous indumentum usually is strongly appressed on the very narrow basal leaves and more or less obliquely patent otherwise. Upper stem leaves are dilated near the base, bracts are relatively long, the calyx is c. half as long as the corolla, the latter appears dark yellow. The plant occurs in the West Rhodope Mountains. The chromosome number is 2n = 38, which can be interpreted as hypohexaploid in relation to the basic chromosome number of x = 7, usually found in asterotrichous species. Potential parents may be O. stojanoffii (TURRILL) TEPPNER (2n = 14), the most similar species, and a tetraploid type of O. heterophylla GRISEB. (2n = 26). Zusammenfassung TEPPNER H. 2008. (Boraginaceae) includes about 150 species distributed world-wide in which only about 75 plants has been described for its morphology and less than 10 plants for their chemical constituents and clinical potential. The phytochemical reports of this genus revels that it comprise mainly aliphatic ketones, lipids, naphthazarins, alkaloids, phenolic compounds, naphthoquinones, flavones while most important are shikonins and onosmins. The plants are traditionally used as laxative, anthelmintic and for alexipharmic effects. The plants are also equally use in eye, blood diseases, bronchitis, abdominal pain, stangury, thirst, itch, lecoderma, fever, wounds, burns, piles and urinary calculi. The flowers of various plants are prescribed as stimulants, cardiotonic, in body swelling while leaves are used as purgative and in cutaneous eruptions. The roots are used for coloring food stuffs, oils and dying wool and in medicinal preparations. This review emphasizes the distribution, morphology, phytochemical constituents, ethnopharmacology, which may help in future research. Outline of angiosperm phylogeny: orders, families, and representative genera with emphasis on Oregon native plants Priscilla Spears December 2013 The following listing gives an introduction to the phylogenetic classification of the flowering plants that has emerged in recent decades, and which is based on nucleic acid sequences as well as morphological and developmental data. This listing emphasizes temperate families of the Northern Hemisphere and is meant as an overview with examples of Oregon native plants. It includes many exotic genera that are grown in Oregon as ornamentals plus other plants of interest worldwide. The genera that are Oregon natives are printed in a blue font. Genera that are exotics are shown in black, however genera in blue may also contain non-native species. Names separated by a slash are alternatives or else the nomenclature is in flux. When several genera have the same common name, the names are separated by commas. The order of the family names is from the linear listing of families in the APG III report. Our work is focused both in the internal relationships among representatives of Omphalodes main subgroups (and including Omphalodes verna, the type species), and their relationships with other Cynoglosseae genera that have been related to the Omphalodes group. Our phylogenetic analysis of ITS and trnL-trnF molecular markers establish close relationships of the American Omphalodes with the genus Mimophytum, and also with Cynoglossum paniculatum and Myosotidium hortensia. The southwestern European annual Omphalodes species form a discrete group deserving taxonomic recognition. We describe two new genera to reduce the paraphyly in the genus Omphalodes, accommodating the European annual species in Iberodes and Cynoglossum paniculatum in Mapuchea. The pollen of the former taxon is described in detail for the first time. Alternate Names stick-tights, beggar-ticks, stickseed, sheepbur, European sticktight, bur forget-me-not, European stick- weed Synonyms Lappula echinata Gilib., Lappula myosotis Moench Description Bluebur is an annual plant that is pro- fusely branched with stems up to 2 feet tall. The entire plant is covered with stiff, white hairs and has a mousy odor. The hairs usually lie flat against the stems and leaves. Leaves are alternate, 3/4 to 4 inches long, and covered with stiff white hairs on both surfaces. The lower leaves are oblong, Mrkvicka by Alexander Photo stalked, and blunt-tipped, whereas the upper leaves are stalkless. Flowers are blue with a yellow throat, resembling forget- me-not flowers but smaller, about 1/8 of an inch across. They appear near the ends of stems in leafy clusters. Each flower pro- duces 4 small nuts with 2 rows of hooked prickles that have star-shaped tips. Fruit stalks are straight and erect. Similar Species Western bluebur (L. occidentalis (S. Wats.) Greene) is a weedy annual plant, native to Alaska, that can be distin- guished from bluebur by its nuts. Western bluebur nuts have 1 row of hooked prickles, while the exotic bluebur nuts have 2 rows. Stick-seed (Hackelia floribunda (Lehm.) I.M. Johnson) is native to British Columbia and resembles Family: Boraginaceae Bluebur both bluebur species, but the fruiting stalk of stick-seed is curved or bent downwards. -

Mihail Sadoveanu, nr. 3, 700490–Iaşi, Romania Corresponding author: [email protected] This second part of the paper about the vascular flora of Rarău Massif listed approximately half of the whole number of the species registered by the authors in their field trips or already included in literature on the same area. Other taxa have been added to the initial list of plants, so that, the total number of taxa registered by the authors in Rarău Massif amount to 1443 taxa (1133 species and 310 subspecies, varieties and forms). There was signaled out the alien taxa on the surveyed area (18 species) and those dubious presence of some taxa for the same area (17 species). Also, there were listed all the vascular plants, protected by various laws or regulations, both internal or international, existing in Rarău (i.e. 189 taxa). Finally, there has been assessed the degree of wild flora conservation, using several indicators introduced in literature by Nowak, as they are: conservation indicator (C), threat conservation indicator) (CK), sozophytisation indicator (W), and conservation effectiveness indicator (E). INTRODUCTION A comprehensive analysis of Rarău flora, in terms of plant diversity, taxonomic structure, biological, ecological and phytogeographic characteristics, as well as in terms of the richness in endemics, relict or threatened plant species was published in our previous note (see Oprea & Sîrbu 2012). -

ENUMERATION The spermatophytic plants with their accepted names as per The Plant List [http://www.theplantlist.org/ ], through proper taxonomic treatments of recorded species and infra-specific taxa, collected from Gorumara National Park has been arranged in compliance with the presently accepted APG-III (Chase & Reveal, 2009) system of classification. Further, for better convenience the presentation of each species in the enumeration the genera and species under the families are arranged in alphabetical order. In case of Gymnosperms, four families with their genera and species also arranged in alphabetical order. The following sequence of enumeration is taken into consideration while enumerating each identified plants. (a) Accepted name, (b) Basionym if any, (c) Synonyms if any, (d) Homonym if any, (e) Vernacular name if any, (f) Description, (g) Flowering and fruiting periods, (h) Specimen cited, (i) Local distribution, and (j) General distribution. Each individual taxon is being treated here with the protologue at first along with the author citation and then referring the available important references for overall and/or adjacent floras and taxonomic treatments. Mentioned below is the list of important books, selected scientific journals, papers, newsletters and periodicals those have been referred during the citation of references. The Anatomical Properties of Two Onosma L

Accepted 27 October, 2011 In this study, the morphological and anatomical characteristics of Onosma frutescens Lam. and Onosma inexspectata Teppner were investigated. O. inexspectata is an endemic species. Both examined species have secondary root structure, and cortex is multilayered and composed of parenchymatical cells. While, xylem is composed of sclerenchymatic cells and tracheary elements in roots of O. frutescens, xylem is composed of tracheal elements in roots of O. inexspectata. Glandular and eglandular trichomes are present on the epidermis of stem of both species. Parenchyma cells are 28.12 ± 7.55 × 24.90 ± 5.42 in stem of O. frutescens. Parenchyma cells are 37.35 ± 8.66 × 17.09 ± 3.44 in stem of O. inexspectata. Stomata are anisocytic and anomocytic. Vascular bundles are surrounded by a parenchymatic sheat in both species.
