Department of Information Technology Program Educational Objectives [PEO] PEO1: Graduates of the program will be able to apply fundamental principles of engineering in problem solving and understand the role of computing in multiple disciplines. PEO2: Graduates will learn to apply various computational techniques & tools for developing solutions & projects in real worlds. PEO3: Be employed as Information Technology (IT) professionals beyond entrylevel positions or be making satisfactory progress in graduate programs. PEO4: Demonstrate that they can function, communicate, collaborate, and continue to learn effectively as ethically and socially responsible IT professionals. Program Specific Outcomes [PSO] By the completion of program the students will have following program specific outcomes. PSO1: Foundation of computer system: Ability to under- stand the principles and working of computer systems & information technology. PSO2: Foundations of software development: possess professional skills and knowledge of software design pro- cess. Familiarity and practical competence with a broad range of programming language and open source plat- forms. PROGRAM OUTCOMES (POs) Engineering Graduates will be able to: 1. Engineering knowledge: Apply the knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering fundamentals, and an engineering specialization to the solution of complex engineering problems. 2. Problem analysis: Identify, formulate, review research literature, and analyze complex engineering problems reaching substantiated conclusions using first princi- ples of mathematics, natural sciences, and engineering sciences. 3. Design/development of solutions: Design solutions for complex engineering problems and design system com- ponents or processes that meet the specified needs with appropriate consideration for the public health and safe- ty, and the cultural, societal, and environmental consid- erations. 4. Conduct investigations of complex problems: Use re- search-based knowledge and research methods includ- ing design of experiments, analysis and interpretation of data, and synthesis of the information to provide valid conclusions. 5. Modern tool usage: Create, select, and apply appropri- ate techniques, resources, and modern engineering and IT tools including prediction and modeling to complex engineering activities with an understanding of the lim- itations. 6. The engineer and society: Apply reasoning informed by the contextual knowledge to assess societal, health, safety , legal and cultural issues and the consequent responsibilities relevant to the professional engineering practice. 7. Environment and sustainability: Understand the im- pact of the professional engineering solutions in soci- etal and environmental contexts, and demonstrate the knowledge of, and need for sustainable development. 8. Ethics: Apply ethical principles and commit to profes- sional ethics and responsibilities and norms of the engi- neering practice. 9. Individual and team work: Function effectively as an individual, and as a member or leader in diverse teams, and in multidisciplinary settings. 10. Human Action: It is a sequence of human body movements, and may involve several body parts concurrently . Examples of Human Action What is Human Action Recognition in Video? Given an input video, perform some appropriate processing, and output the . Human Action Recognition in video (HAR) is mainly concerned about the abnormal state behaviour recognition. Real life Applications of HAR: 1. Daily activity recognition 2. Abnormal Human Action Recognition (AbHAR) 3. Interaction Recognition 4. Security and Surveillance 5. Sports analysis and Entertainment 6. Human-computer interaction 7. Event Analysis etc. Components of HAR: A typical action recognition generally contains two major components: a) Action Representation b)Action Classification Action Representation component basically converts an action video into a feature vector or a series of vectors. Action Classification component infers an action label from the vector. Bag-of-Words (BoW) Approach: In computer vision, the Bag-of-Words model (BoW model) can be applied to image classification, by treating image features as words. A bag of visual words is a vector of occurrence counts of a vocabulary of the local image features. To represent an image using the BoW model, an image can be treated as a document. BoW includes following three steps for Action Representation: 1) Feature detection/extraction 2) Feature representation/description 3) Codebook generation Action Classification is done by a classifier such as Support Vector Machine (SVM). Flow Chart of Bag-of -Words Method: An action is represented by a histogram of visual words, and can be classified by a classifier such as Support Vector Machine (SVM).     DISCUSSION MEETING ON RECENT ADVANCES IN MAGNETISM May 14-16, 2019 INDIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY MANDI School of Basic Sciences IIT Mandi organized ‘Discussion Meeting on Recent Advances in Magnetism (DMRAM)’ on 14 - 16 May, 2019. The meeting was arranged for fostering ideas and deeper understanding of the emerging aspects of fundamental and applied magnetism, a current frontier area in condensed matter physics research. In this meeting at IIT Mandi, total participants were 70 which included 20 external participants from different Indian institutions. The meeting started with the inaugural address by Prof. T. A. Gonsalves (Director, IIT Mandi) and Prof. Ramesh Oruganti (Adjunct Professor, IIT Mandi), which were followed by 20 scientific research talks spanned over the period of two and half days. Prof. E. V. Sampathkuamaran, Prof. P. L. Paulose and Prof. K. Maiti from TIFR Mumbai gave an exposition of the subject through various probing tools. Prof. A. Taraphdar (IIT Kharagpur/IIT Mandi), Prof. P. Mahadevan (SNBNCBS Kolkata) and few other speakers gave some fundamental lectures about the theoretical aspect of various magnetic materials. Few speakers gave talks in the area of multiferroics while some speakers talked about frustrated quantum magnets, shape memory alloys and spin chain compounds. Couple of speakers talked in the area of applied magnetism. Besides the research talks from invited speakers, there were total 20 poster presentations by the PhD scholars of IIT Mandi.
